The regular term of court is in session this week, Judge Mendel L. Smith, presiding, Solicitor Cooper. Stenographer Perrin, Sheriff Burts and Clerk of Court Perrin are at their accustomed places and the work of the court is progressing smoothly. The most interesting case before this court is the case of the State against Charlie Logan and others, for the killing of Mrs. Scott of Lowndesville. The court appointed D. H. Hill and J. Howard Moore to defend Logan. According to the laws of South Caroi* ji - i _ f a i. _ i una, ine aeienaant in a muruer case is entitled to three full days after indictment by the Grand Jury, before being forced to trial, and the defendants have claimed the three days. This postponed the case until Thursday and Tuesday at noon the jury was dismissed with instructions to return to Court Thursday morning, unless otherwise notified. There is much interest being taken in this case and many rumors are afloat concerning it. One is that others will be brought into the case before it is ended. If there is any foundation for these rumors, the State should spare no effort in sifting matters to the bottom and bringing the guilty party or parties to justice. If all evidence is not cleared up by Thursday, it is probable the case will be postponed until further evidence can be secured. The cases tried so far are: State vs. Ellis Hughes, murder. Not guilty. State vs. Jim Madden, Assault and Battery. Guilty, 7 years. State vs. Ben Haskell, Assault and Battery. Not guilty. State vs. Lemma Martin, Murder. Not guilty. POWHATAN. . The Indian pageant "Powhatan" given in the Opera House last Thursday night under the auspices of the Daughters of the Confederacy, was a success in every way. There was a good crowd present to hear the bright, snappy songs and to see how their friends and neighbors looked as Indians. Miss Margaret Evans took the part of Pocahontas, singing sweetly and looking lovely in her fantastic dress. Miss Ada McMillan, Dr. Pressly and William Harden, received rounds of applause in their song\ as qui aiso ivnss n.au;n ijeacn, Miss Ruth Howie and Mrs. Walton Stephens. Mr. Jas. S. Cochran looked the Indian Chief and as always, sang- his part well. Mr. Baker, the man who trained the chorus, took the part of Capt. John Smith and pleased the audience with his witty hits and his play on the local names. Mr. W. E. Hill looked resplendent as Capt. Rolfe, and made a lovely lover. The Daughters were very successful, realizing over seventy-five dollars. The success of the play was especially due to Mrs. C C. Gambrell, the president of the organization and in her work she was ably assisted by Miss Majrgie Brooks. The money will be used to mark the graves of the Confederate dead at Long Cane, and in the establishment of a relic room on the third floor of the City Hall. DISTURBING NOISES. The people around MeMurray's Drug store and on that side of the town are entering a vigorous protesl against the unaccustomed noises heard Sunday morning a week ago The noises were unusual and whilt not loud, were hard on the patienc* and temper of a working man. "Justice" Complaint th; Road Monterey Needs Attention. Calhoun Falls, S. C., J'ln* 2, 19 To the Editor of The Pre;;s and Bj ner: Since your paper has buen in t hands of its present editor and mai ger, there are few paragraphs tha have not read with interest, soi with amusement and, too, in the ci rent issue of June 2nd, with a lit amazement. The paper is full good things as usual, but the t' items which surprised not only t writer, but other readers, were reference to the roads. One item suggested a first ck road from Abbeville to Due We 40 feet wide and well built. T other stated that Supervisor Steve : son is to open up a erood road lea ing from the main road to minei spring, Little Mountain, for t pleasure and at the expense of au1 mobile owners in Abbeville. Both suggestions are practical, suppose, and if carried out won give the people of the city and other places a lot of pleasure, but t condition of other public roads the county should first be consider and the good of people in other pai of the county. For instance: physician whose practice takes hi in all directions, was heard to s; that the road leading from Abbevil to Monterey is one of the very woi in the county. Prominent busine men and workers for the public ha complained of this road and all wl travel over it wonder what manner politician Mr. Stevenson can be; wh> the roads to Due West and Antrevi] are in good condition, yet he h kept the force of hands at work < them while many other roads a utterly neglected. Complaints ha been , made to Mr. Stevenson, we a told, and he has been invited travel over these roads occasional just to get some idea of the inco venience endured by the travellii public, but complaints and invitatio have had no effect. The Supervis of Abbeville County is elected a: paid by the voters of Abeville cour ty to keep the roads in good repa He may not have money anu wor men enough to be able to do this b he should at least keep everlasting at it and divide the time and mon equally and fairly between the difft ent parts of the county. And should not take one minute of t time he has to open up new roads work private roads (even at the e pense of private parties) unless i existing public roads are in good co dition. The road to Little Mou tain would give the writer and fai ily a lot of pleasure but we are wi ing to forego that pleasure and 1 Mr. Stevenson put his time and wo on the public road from Abbeville Monterey, from Abbeville to Ci houn Falls, via Watts and on mai other bad roads of which the vote who elected him will gladly tell hi if he will listen. Or, better still, could take a little trip over the cou ty and find out for himself how the things are. i The Editors of the Medium a Press and Banner might take tl trip with him so they could appre ate the difficulties under which ma i of their readers labor when th i start out to town with the vario products of the farm. ; If the three men were to take t trip suggested, they would soon d cover that all the roads are not b but that there are bad places evei where gullies, washes, mudholes, e i which a squad of hands could lill a , level up without giving the roads I general working. What say yc ' Mr. Editor? Here is your invil tion along with those of Mr. llort : and Mr. Stevenson. Surely if t I editors and the Supervisor join han there will be something done for t I good of the public they all serve! Justice. A Cough Remedy That Relieves It's prepared from the healin? Pi ! Commencement week at Due West 13 has been a week of unusual interest in_ to Abbeville county for over threequarters of a century. A great deal ;he of enthusiasm for commencement ia_ week is due no doubt to the fact that t i the people of this county have sons me and daughters in the institutions Jr there. But perhaps r.iore enthusiasm t] is aroused by the magnitude of the 0f occasion and by the interest that is wo always felt in young men and young jje women beginning their life work. jn The Erskine Theological Seminary had its closing exercises Saturday ISS evening. Rev. W. N. Garrison, of AnS4. derson, made an excellent address to the class of students completing th course of the Seminary. The note I that was sounded in his address is a al no*e the present generation is only beginning to hear. He emphasized the need to return to fundamen;o tals, and a more strict application in j the school of Christ. On Sabbath morning Rev. Dr. Lyons, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of ' Louisville, Ky., preached the Bacca- i . laureate sermon to the graduating , class of Erskine and of the Woman's id, ^ College of Due West. Dr. Lyons de-j livered a masterly .sermon in a powerful way. The people of Due West im , , I were highly appreciative of Dr. j U Lyons' mesage and his scholarly at, tainments. st I Of unusual interest was the annual !SS debate between the Euphemian and ve Philomathean Literary Societies. For the last three years these societies have been contesting over the owner Ue snip 01 a Loving Cup, given by Dr. as Darlington, of Washington, D. C. For the past two years the cup has been in possession of the Euphemians. The subject for debate was: ve Resolved, that the United States re should intervene in Mexico by armed to ; ^ forces in the interest or humanity. The question was Hotly discussed from both sides, and was followed ng ng with a great deal of interest by the audience. The decision was renderor , ed in favor of the affirmative, thus giving the cup to the Euphemians for the third consecutive year. The lr. k medals were delivered by Mr. T. H. . White, of Chester. > ut ' I Tuesday was a full day. In the morning six numbers of the gradu-| jr ating class of Erskine College spoke. | The diplomas were delivered by the President in the name of the Board of Directors. The commencement ora or tor was Judge Joseph Johnson of t Greenville. Judge Johnson made a1 strong appeal for Christian manhood. In the course of his address he paid nthe highest tribute to President Willi U son as a man of higli, noble, chriset tian ideals, tempered with sane k judgment and a sound mind. The to afternoon was given to the Senior I Class to observe their Class Day Exercises, and the evening to the Alumni Meeting. . ' Commencement at the Woman's im College was held Wednesday mornn_ ing in the Memorial Hall. Hon. se Robert A. Cooper, of Laurens, was I the speaker. ncj' Mr. Cooper stressed the present as ls a time of opportunity and work? cj_ referring to the past as a time of dreams, and to the future as a time iiy ey of hope. The practical side of Mr. ug Cooper's address was striking and ! appealing. The exercises of the morn ke ing in which the young ladies took is- part were enjoyed by all. Dr. Robinj son delivered the diplomas and certificates in the name of the Board of ^ Directors. The young ladies graduat. ing this year wore caps and gowns which added to the Impressiveness of the occasion and uniformity in dress. )U > ta_ The closing number of the comon | mencement was a musical concert 0 given by the Woman's College?in cjs i this the "Sweet Girl Graduates" ex' celled, and Wednesday evening was felt to be the most creditable of all the exercises.
