I*rof. J. B. Kay, who Was Principal of
this High School last year attended the
teachers' meeting in Columbia last week.
Mrs. Theron Allen, of Auderson, spent
several days last week with her father,
Mr. E. W. Harper and family.
Prof. N. E. Fender, of Bamberg, who
has been elected Principal of the High
School in this place for next scholastic
year, came up the latter part of last week
and brought his household and kitchen
furniture with him and stored it in the
Fennel building till he will need it when
he comes up later to stay.
Monday's mixed mail and passenger
train, due here at 10:30 a. m., because of a
broken-down worn-out engine, did not
reach this place till about 2:3Q p. m.
The old Joe Kennedy house, about two
miles out, was burned Monday night about
midnight Some darkies were living in it,
and can give no reason for it, They it is
said, lost what they had. Many tbereare,
perhaps, who well remember this time
honored home. It was one of the oldest
In this section. Years ago it was occupied
by Mr. Joe Kennedy, a'nd his wife, kno.fn
and called by everybody "Aunt Beck."
They were honored and respected by all.
The latch-strings to their doors were al
ways on the outside. They delighted In
giving a cordial welcome to all comers.
The writer never will forget the many
very pleasant moments that he in the
years gone by spent in this pleasant home,
and he can but regret the no doubt care
less and uncalled-for fate with which the
house was overtaken.
Mr. D. L. Barnes, the special friend of
the writer, brought to us a few days ago a
basket full of the finest peaches (his own
raising) that we have seen for several
years, and they were of the best kind.
This remembrance will not soon be forgot
ten.
A very beneficial rain came to us Wednes
day night about midnight and another and
better one was added to it the next day
about 2 p. m. The last was a downpour in
places. Yesterday laud was too wet to
plow in many places.
Bev. R. W. Barber came up from Colum
bia, where he had spent some time with
his son-in-law, Mr. J). N. Bourne. He will
be here with his son-in-law Mr. E.J. fluck
abe? and family for some time.
Mr. Bell and family moved to Dr. J.
D. Wilson's late home here on Monday?a
late purchase of Mr. Bell's.
Hon. J. Moore Mars, candidate for re
election to the State Senate, was here

friends whom he met and who were glad

Mr.; and Mrs. J. B. Huekabee went over
to Qatttiey Friday. Mr. Huekabee is en
gaged at the power plant at Gregg Shoals
and gets a ten days leave of absence
which he will utilize In taking his wife to
visit her home people.
.Last Sunday, Children's Day was be
comingly observed in Smyrna church.
Sunday School and preaching were both
omitted and both hours given up to the
matter in hand. At the proper time the
pastor Rev. J. C. Chandler, master of cer
emonies, at his post, called ^upon Rev. J.
W. Bishop, the Baptist minister who was
present, to lead In prayer, which he d|d In
a feeling, appropriate way. Then began
the unfolding of the admirable program
that had been arranged. "Young Amer
ica" was brotght to the Grout In all of its
glory, and In carrying out the different
parts [assigned tboo, Qlearly showed their
aptness for what tfaay -were called upon to
do, as well as the ability and fitness of
those having them in training. At the
dose, a Children's Day fund of 18.86 was
raised, which will greatly aid in carrying
out the objects for which it is intended. A
day well and happily spent by all.

held in Eureka School District No. 43, to
vote a 4 mill tax for school purposes.
It is therefore ordered, tnat an election
be held at Eureka school house between
the usual voting hours, on Tuesday, July .
21,1914, for the purpose of voting a four ,
mill tax on Eureka School District No. 43.
