James R. Haddon Dead.
Mr. James R. Haddon died at his home
Monday, July 29,1914, aged about seventy
years. He was a Confederate soldier and
'did his whole duty in the trying days of
he Sixti es.
Mr. Haddon has accumulated a good es
tate as the result of industry and economy.
He was a quiet unassuming man arid
good neighbor. .
He is survived by a brother, Mr. David
Haddon, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas
Nickles.
Miss Georgia Kennedy Dead.
Miss Georgia Kennedy, youngest child
of Mr. John L. Kennedy of the Belleview
section of Abbeville County, died at Silver
Street, New Mexico, after a long illness.
She was about twenty-two years of age.
Miss Kennedy had been in bad health
for several years. She spent about a year
at Asheville, N. C., and from there went to
Silver Street, New Mexico, where she re
mained for about two years. Her remains
were brought to Abbeville yesterday, and
were taken to Long Cane, where funeral
services were held. ,
Miss Kennedy's long illness has cast a
continuing shadow over the lives of her
parents; but in all the weeks and weeks
of hopeless waiting she has faced the in
evitable with that resignation that is born
only of a Christian's faith. Like a star
shut out from its sisters by intervening
clouds, she has shed the greater light in
the smaller sphere. Wherever she has,
gone, she has been loved for her qu alities
of gentleness, meekness and consideration
for others.
While the death of the young is always
shocking, it is not without its reward. I
is written: "Remember now thy Creator
in the days of thy youth, while the evil
days come not, nor the years draw nigh,
when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in
them." There are such days in every long
life; days when life becomes a burden.
To live only in the morning of life is to
enjoy all the freshness and beauties of
youth without incurring the penalties of
old age. But death will always have its
terrors for those who mourn the loss of
dear ones. Mankind "is of the earth,
earthy." The family tie is the closest of
j earthly relations, and few if any of us can
| fully comprehend reunion in the great be
j yond. The human heart must over bleed .
j when earthly ties are severed. Itisnat

Mr. W. W. Bradley goes to Clemson
on Wednesday to attend a meeting of
the Trustees of Clemson College.
Miss Lizzie Sharp spent the week
end with Mrs. W. W. Bradley.
Mr. A. M Stone has gone to irginia
to visit his parents, and relatives. He
will be away some time.
Mr. Allen Robertson who lives in
Atlanta, is on a visit to his sisters,
Misses Mae and Eugenia Robertson of
this city.
Mrs. Fred Hill and Mrs. Herman
Benton spent the week-end in Atlanta.
Mrs. H. H. Hill and little daughter,
have gone to Baltimore to spejid some
time
Hon. Fraser Lyon spent Saturday
and Sunday with his sister and family,
Mrs. J. H. McDill.
Mrs. James S. Cochran and daugh
ter, Mildred, are off for a vacation in
the mountains of North Carolina.
Mr. Gus Watkins is very ill at his
home and his mother and sister will
appreciate any help that tehir friends '
might give. Mr. Watkins is an old res- ,
ident of Abbeville, having lived here 1
all his life and has many friends who ,
are sorry to hear of his sickness and (
no doubt will be glad to help in any
way they can.
Mrs. E. B. Gary left Monday for a

The Simpson home was very attrac
tive on this occasion, the l^rge cool
piazza was arranged with palms, ferns
and made an attractive background
for the many beautiful young ladies
who enjoyed the games. Inside was
pretty with vases of cut flowers ? and
among these Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Simp
son and Miss Chandler received. Mrs.
Gson and Miss Chandler received their
guests assisted by Mrs. S. H. Rosen
berg and Mrs. .G. E. Calvert. After the
g2mes of Rook were over the merry
ciowd enjoyed dancing for a while.
After which refreshing ice cream was
served. Miss Mae and Miss Eugenia
Robertson served punch during the
entire evening.
At The Opera House.
The pictures at the Opera House on
Monday and Tuesday nights were
splendid the homes, stores and babies
were the chief attractions. There was
a very large attendance and everyone
was delighted, some having their
beautiful homes shown, others their
places of business, while otehrs of the
more fortunate class, their babies.
So nearly every one will have- some
thing of their own to look at. Come
again Wednesday evening. Mr. Cheat
ham is doing his best to please the
community in his pictures and he is
always polite and very attentive to all
who go and always has the very best
pictures. Don't miss seeing the pic
iures tonight.
