Pastor Rassell In Chicago Took For His Text, "The Grace of God Which Bringeth Salvation Hath Appeared For All Men" (Titus ii, 11)?Cor rects a Common Error Regarding the Fate of the Non-elect.' Chicago, May 26th.?Pastor Rus sell gave two ad dresses here today. We report one of his addresses, on "Pentecostal Bless ings," from the text: "The grace of God which bring eth salvation hath appeared for all men." (Titus ii, 11.) He said in part: As Bible students we find it more and more necessary to study the Scriptures discriminatingly Hitherto God's people have unwitting ly narrowed down the grace of God and minimized the efficacy of Christ's redemptive sacrifice by asserting that all the blessings are for the Church and none for the world?that they are for the Dresent Age, and that with its consummation all hope will expire, and that the world, the non-elect, will suf fer to all eternity, without ever having tasted of the grace of God in Christ many without even coming to a knowl edge of that provision for sinners. Two Salvations? Two Pentecosts. A more cureful study of the Bible is revealing to God's people all over the world the fact that He has for man kind two distinct salvations, one for the Church, the other for the world, and each of these salvations is intro duced by a Pentecostal blessing. Thai the Church is merely a "first-fruits unto God of His creatures" is distinct ly stated by St. James (i, IS), and this implies most positively that there will be after-fruits. % . Note the Apostle's statement respect ing the efficacy of Christ's sacrifice, both for the Church and for the world eovo "Wo 1q r nronitiation for our sins (the Church), and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world" (I John ii. 2). This does not signify that all will gain everlasting life on the same plane of glory. The change of nature from human to divine is a part of the su perior blessing provided by the Lord for those who now walk .by faith in the footsteps of the Redeemer. The blessings to the world will not include a change of nature, but a restoration of the willing and obedient to human perfection, such as Adam enjoyed be fore he sinned. Many of us had not noticed until re cently that two Pentecostal blessings * ? T">?n,ir are mentioned uy uue i iui;u?. vu. overlooking this was doubtlAs because it was not due time for this feature to be clearly understood. Now, as the time nears for the fuldlment of the second Pentecostal blessing, the force and meaning of the Scripture shines out Before making known the riches of His grace to the world God has been pleased to foreordain the election of the Church, to be joint-heirs with Jesus in the glorious work of blessing earth's teeming millions. , Notice the text: "It shall come to pass, saith the Lord, at the end of those days, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh, and in those., days I will pour out My Spirit upon My servants and upon My handmaidens" (Joel ii, 28; Acts 11 17.) St Peter, in quoting the prophecy, properly* applied only the portion which was due in his day, namely, thut portion applicable to the servants and handmaideus of the Lord. The two features of the prophecy are distinctly marked?one blessing to be upon God's servants and handmaidens only, the other to be upon -n ^ *- . ?Uili*+ uu Liesu. lue uue wua iu uk hi luusc days," the other, "after those days." Jubilee Day?Jubilee Year. The Day of Pentecost was the grand Jubilee Day, in which God's blessing was attained, marking the forgiveness of sin and the acceptance by the Heav enly Father. It was the 50th day (7x7 plus 1). Every Jewish Sabbath pointed to this Jubilee Day as the culmination of the Sabbath day system. * The word "Sabbath" signifies rest and this cul mination of the Sabbath days in a fif tieth signified the completeness of the rest. But it will be remembered that in the Law given to Israel there was not only a seven-day series of Sabbaths, but also a seven-year series of Sabbaths Each seventh year was a Sabbath year, leading up to a Jubilee (7x7 plus 1). the fiftieth. As the day Sabbath reached a glorious culmination for the Church, so the year Sabbath will-reach a glorious climax for the world. The fiftieth year was the Jtfbilee. In that vear all debts wete cancelled, and all who had been #oId into slavery for debt went free. This pictured (fie coming blessings? the Day of Messiah, when He shall reign and when through the merit of His sacrifice all Sin will be forgiven and all slavery to sin and death will be abolished. This is not a new thought. Centuries ago Bible students discerned that the Jubilee of Israel's time was a feature of the Law foreshadowing a blessing world-wide. It was with this knowledge that our beautiful hymn was written: "Blow Ye the Trumpet, Blow." London Largely Built on Marsh. Abundant evidence as to the marshy nature of the ground upon which a large part of the city of London was originally built is still to be discover ed in such names as Fenchurch street, Finbury and Moorflelds. Li r A...... 1U. tf.w ?< I o novo i arson nv??/ mw vi Knowledge; Ye Entered Not In Your selves, and Them That Were Enter ing Ye Hindered." Brooklyn, N. Y., May 5.?The Acad emy of Music was crowded today tc hear Pastor Rus-; sell's discourse on "The Lost Key of; Knowledge." Tak* j Ing his text fipm Luke xl, 52, he said:? In the New Tes tament the word' lawyer has a very 'different meaning! from our general usage. It applied to 1 those religious teachers of the Jews who j made special professions of sanctity of I heart and earnest desire to know God's will, as expressed In the Mosaic Law, and to teach the same to the people. Tltf corresponding class of today are deslg nated Doctors of Divinity. Our text therefore, with this correction, reads "Woe unto you. Doctors of Divinity, for ye hav^ taken away the Key ol Knowledge; ye entered not In your Belves. and them that were entering ye hindered." When the common peopfc heard Jesus gladly they Inquired, "Have any of the Scribes and Pharfr sees believed on Him? Ha7e the Dar tors of the Law endorsed Him?" I The Kay of Knowledge Buried. In our text Jesus charged the Je? Ish Doctors of Divinity with the rw t sponslbility of having taken away the Key of Knowledge, refusing to use It themselves to enter into the great a? preclatlon of the blessings then due, and hiding It from the common people, who trusted them so Implicitly. We charge that the same thing is {rue to day. Not only were the Jewish people typical of spiritual Israel, and their Age typical of this Age. and their Har vest typical of th# Harvest or closing time of this Age, but additionally, now as then, "God's people perish for lack of knowledge."?Hosea Iv, 6. It is this matter of misleading the people, deceiving them, that constitut ed the basis of Jesus' charge against the Doctors of Divinity of old, and we belie re that His judgment is very sim ilar today respecting the Doctors of Divinity of Christendom?"Ye have taken away (ye have bidden) the Key of Knowledge; ye have not entered in yourselves, and them that were enter ing ye hindered:" . Necessity For Knowledge' Knowledge of God, the Bible do clares, Is Indispensable for the attain Lueui ui tue ^>cm (fiuc vi vu? Calling. Thus Jesus said, "This is lifa eternal, that they may know Thee, the only True God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast sent" (John xvii, 3.) We are not to understand this to sig nify that anyone who has merely been made acquainted with the fact that there Is one Creator, and that Jesus ia His Son, is on account of this knowl< edge to be granted everlasting life. Our Lord's words do not refer to a knowledge about God, but to a knowl edge or personal acquaintance with God and His Son. And such an inti mate acquaintance is not obtained merely by an introduction, but by com panionship; it signifies an intimacy of acquaintanceship, a familiarity. Thus Jesus prayed for us. His fol lowers, "Sanctify them through Thy Truth, YlJy Word is Truth." Any who neglect the Divine Word will fail*, of the sanctifying power and thus fail of the acquaintanceship with God which alone guarantees everlasting life To those who have come under the sanctifying influence of His Word our Lord says "today, as He said to His Jewish followers eighteen centuries ago, "To you it is given to know the Mystery of the Kingdom of God, but tn nil nntnldf" these thincs are spoken in parables and dark sayings, that hearing they might not understand, and seeing they might not perceive." The outsiders?the Doctors of Divinity?are not permitted the Key of Knowledge. "Even so, Father, for so it seemeth good In Thy sight."?Matthew xl, 25,26. What Constitutes the Key? The Key of Knowledge consists of the faithful study of God's Word, with an honest purpose to know the things that are freely given unto us of God. This implies a consecration of heart, for none others would really desire that they might do the Divine will And this fcnplies also a faith in our' Lord's pr?Mi?e that "he that doeth the will of My Father shall know of the doctrine." (John vii, 17.) It is this consecrated, conscientious Bible study that is lacking today?that ia being discouraged today by the great teach oro nnH HrtPtrtrS rtf DivInlt.V. Everything calculated to help Bible study, to get rid of the darkness of the creeds and superstitions of the past, Is opposed?but not openly. But, oh, what weeping of disappointment, and what a chagrin and gnashing of teeth will come shortly to the "false shepherds," to the Key-hiding Doctors of Divinity, when they find that with all their e& deavors to bolster up shams and super Btitions in which they themselves do not believe, the entire fabric of Cburch ianlty will collapse, as the Scripture* predict!
