Chicago, May 4.?John F. Jelke,
Oleomargarine manufacturer, was
fined $10,000 today and sentenced to
two years in jail for conspiracy to
defraud the government of taxes on
illicitly colored oleomargarine. Seven
other defendants in the Oleomargarino
cases, most of them connected with
the John F. Felke Company, were
fined $2,500 each by Judge Geiger in
the United States District Court.
Those fined $2,500 were: "William.
M. Steele, general manager of the
John F. Jelke Company; Harry E.
Hitchings, salesman; Hugh D. Came
ron, Milwaukee representative: D. B.
Tullis, former salesman; W. L. Lillatd
former salesman; Wiliam P.- Jacksotn,
former manager of the George P.
Braun Company, taken over by Jelke;
and Fred Rapp, former salesman for
the Braun Company.
The government charged all the
defendants with entering into a con
spiracy to violate the internal revenue;
laws by selling white eleomargarine- <
to retailers and teaching them howi
to color it illicitly and with selling it j
at retail without paving the federal tax
of 10 cents a pound.

New Picture Theater.

The Abbeville Lumber Comqany is now
making a number of improvements on the
building next to the Dixie Cafe. When
completed this will bo occupied by the
Abbeville Amusement Co. under the man
agement of Mr. F. M. Unger, formerly of
Anderson S. C.
Mr. Unger has made a great success in
the moving picture businesss and he pro
poses to give the people of Abbeville the
benefit of this experience. The shows that
he will put on will be the very best that can
be secured.
He has made a contract with the Lum
ber Co to remodel the whole building, put
ting in tile for front with one hundred
electric lights arranged in four arches
accross the front. It will be fitted with
the most modern opera chairs. The buil
ding will bo ventillated with eight largo
electric fans and one exhaust fan.
A prize of ten dollars and a tickct for one
year will be offered to the school child who
offers the most approriate name for the
show.
Mr. Unger hopes to bo open and ready
for business by the 15th of may.

Mr. Wm. McNeill, formerly of Abbeville
county, now of Swainsboro, Ga., is on a
short visit to friends and relatives here.
He will be in the city for a few days and
will then go to the hoiw of. his daughter,

Mr. McNeill was one of the substantial
citizens of Abbeville county, and he was an
up to date farmer. He brought his large
landed property located near Warrenton
to a high state of cultivation, and as he did
not cam to have the care and worry of the

comfortable. People of Abbeville regret
to haw lost so good a mau and hope that
he may soon decide to return.
