EJryan Speaks of Presidential Prima- "
rles. Completion of Fight
Washington, Jan. 29.?Secretary J
3ryan today told the Common Coun- j
sel club here that adoption of the ,
presidential primary plan would mark I
:he completion of the movement by I
...V.}fV,n nonnlo apo MmlllP Into ah
solute control of the naming of their ,
president. Never again, he declared, I
svould Wall street have anytihng to (
say in the election of a president. !
Mr. Bryan denounced senate rules j
allowing unlimited debate, referring i
to them as the "last stand of the re- 1
actionaries," which permitted a few
to do what they ought not do and pre
vented a majority from doing what
Dught to be done.
Louis D Brandeis told the club that
the government ought to furnish to
the small industrial, commercial and
business man of the country informa
tion to enable them to conduct their
affairs with the same scientific man- <
agement employed by the big business ;
man or concern with large capital,
rhis, he asserted, would be the first |
step in progressive democracy.
j
REGRET, NOT SURPRISE.
Mission Workers in Philadelphia Ex.
pect it.
Philadelphia, Jan. 30.?Regret, but ]
aot surprise today was expressed by i
men here interested in foreign mis- j
sions when they learned of the estab- j
lishment of Confucianism as the state 1
region of China. Much of the organ- ,
Ized effort in this country to prevent j
such action centred in this city. j1
"I think it is u political move," said t
the Rev/'Frank S. Dobbins, missionary ; <
secretary of the Baptist Foreign Mis-i
sionary society. i >
"I do not anticipate any trouble for 1
our mission workers as a result, al-l
though if the gevernment insists upon |
their performing any of the formal^
acts of Confucian worship, there will
be trouble, for they will absolutely
refuse and will walk out. It is a
peculiar thing that the scholars of
China have not decided among them
selves whether Confucianism is a re
ligion or not. It does not treat of a
God or Gods. It has no sacrifices,
no prayers. It is rather a system
of ethics, treating of the relation of
ruler and subject first, and then of the
relation of parent and child.'"
The Rev. William G. Roberts, for
mer moderator of the Presbyterian "
general assembly said: "I do not
think the move will injure the mission
work of any of the Christian i
churches." J
