STATEMENT BY JUDGE JONES. Question ot Safeguarding I'ri Cttiiwi I'n ill 1{)14-? Contests Thrown Out. Columbia, Oct. 2.?When the report of the subcommittee was submitted to the executive committee, attorneys representing Judge Jones withdrew his protest against the balloting in | the primary. A second primary was ordered by the committee to determine the dem- ! ocratic nominee for attorney general. ] The contestants will be J. Fraser Ly- j on, incumbent, and Thomas H. Pee-1 pi?\s, the two candidates who polled , the highest vote on August 27. The question of throwing a safe- j guard about the primary election will be left to the next state convention, . which is to be held in January of j 1H14. A resolution by R. M. Jefferies ; ihis afternoon to call a state conven- i tion during next August met with a j general discussion and was finally ; withdrawn after many of tiie mem- j hers had discussed it. J. B. Park, of i Greenwood, introduced a resolution to j memorialize the general assembly to place the same restrictions around the j primary elections as govern the state elections. Action on this resolution was deferred. The report of 'ie sub- , fommittee on the charges of illeiral voting was submitted during the f- j ternoon and a state convention t. be ! held next August, was recommende<l ! so as to throw certain restrictions i around the primary. "I think it proper now to return my | thanks to all those who supported me t by vote, voice or influence, and who I joined me in a contest which we be- I lieved was for the best interests of I South Carolina. To all such I wish I to say that in the light of the sus- j picion of l'raud and illegality which : was so freely expressed, I felt it to i be my duty to them as well as to my self to contest the election, and to I this end I employed counsel to con- i duct such inquiries and procure such testimony as would prove these sus picions well founded. I'pon the result I of this committee's action 1 was there ! fore forced to rely. "Their report based upon a full in vestigation in a few counties, a par tial report from several and no re port at all from several others, with no further testimony furnished by me, did not justify me, in law or in mor als, to urge action by the full commit tee different from the recommenda tions by the subcommittee, and so it was that I submitted the matter of my contest to their decision upon the testimony reported to them.
