The -Abbeville Baptist Association !
was organized at Iloreb church in
1870. Dr. J. C. Furinan, president of 1

sided at that meeting, and W. P. Mc
Kellar, of Abbeville, acted as clerk. I
The sermon was preached by William
Williams, a professor in the Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary, and
one of the foremost scholars of his;
day. The association has met annually j
since that time.
The body has assembled sit lloreb
church three times since the organi
zation?in 1873, in 1884, and in 1899.
It has met in Abbeville but twice in
its history?in 1STand in 189(5. The |
first time it met in Abbeville J. H.,
Wideman was the moderator and T. L. I
Moore the clerk. In that year W. R. i
Cothran was treasurer of the body, i
and the preachers of (he occasion, 13.!
F. Miller and Crawford II. Toy. Pro
fessor Toy was at that time a mem-j
ber of the faculty of the Seminary, I
but afterwards became a member of j
the faculty of Harvard University, and
is today a professor emeritus of that)
honored institution. In 1S9G J. H. I
Wideman was moderator, W. E. Colli-j
ran was clerk, and W. B. Acker was |
treasurer. The preacher of the annual
sermon was P. 0. S. Curtis, a convert j
from the Episcopal to the Baptist
faith.
Moderators of the association have
been: W. IX Jones, one year: J. W.
Coleman, one year; W. B. Jones, one
year; T. II. Pope, two years* J. H.
\videman, five years: and after an in-!
terval of five years, for twelve years
more: J. S. Gordan, five years, and
later one year; K. J. Forrester, Bix
years; J. A. Brown, two years: A. C.
Wilkins, four years; J. R. Lea veil, j

Clerks of the association have been

The association has had only five'

Something of the growth of the!
Baptist denomination in Abbeville and

seen from the fact that published min-{

sociation had 2.562 members, while to
day there are between 3.400 and 3,500
?an increase of about 30 per cent, in
five years. Five years ago the church- "
es had 1.35S pupils in Hible schools, .

500. Five years ago these churches I
contributed to all causes, except build
ings. $13,941; last year, apart from
church buildings, they contributed p
more than $30,000.

A goodly number of business and pro
fessional iinen interested in tho welfare
j anil progress of Abbeville met in the coun
cil chamber Inst Thursday for tho purpose
of arranging for a series of tours into dif
| ferent sections of the county, with the ob
ject of getting a better acquaintance with
their friends tliroughout the county.
The meeting was provided over by Dr.
C.C. Gambrell and Mr. W. H. White
acted its secretary.
It was decided to make the first trip
j Thursday, August 8.
It is expected that at least 25 autos, ac- L
: connnodating 100 persons, will participate *
in tlie tour. The itinerary of the first trip j
J will include Monterey, Glowing Springs,
Calhoun Falls, Hester, 511. Carrael, Wil
! lington, I McCormick and Troy. Dinner
will be taken at the McCormick.
