We wonder if the persons who are try-,
ing to pet Ool. F. S. Evans to run for con
gress really hate hini or are using him to,
pull out the chestnuts for themselves two J
years hence??Anderson Daily Mail.
Colonel Evans is one of Congressman j
Aiken's staunch friends, and whatever
plans others may have laid out for him,
we will venture that he has no Congres
sional aspirations.
Abbeville Sons Loyal.
When the question of selecting the route
for the trolly, whether to Abbeville or to.
Greenwood, was under consideration, the
people of Abbeville hoped that tho Influ
ence of Mr. Lewis W. Parker and Mr. Auc. j
W. Smith, one of whom was on the ex^cu-.
live commuiee, wouia give ADoevme some
leverage in the decision* Whatever dis
appointment this people may have exper
ienced in the settlement, it is certain that
the two gentlemen named were loyal to
their old home in every act and expression
in connection with selecting the ronto.
In saying this, there is no purpose to
convey the idea that these gentlemen
stood ont unreasonably for the Abbeville
route, and we can not say certainly that a
vote was cast for the Abbeville route.
This was due, however, rather to the fixed
policy of the road to extend directly to
ward a given point, and Greenwix>d is
more nearly in the line of the probable
extension.
Mr. Parker and Mr. Smith have both
repeatedly stated that they hoped to see
the road carried to Abbeville and it is be
lieved that their every influence will be
used to that end. The matter of branch
roads will be taken up as the main line is
completed, and when this comes up, no
one need doubt that Abbeville has friends
at court.
Messrs. Parker and Smith no longer
have property interests in Abbeville, and
their loyalty to and love for their old
home is unalloyed by any personal motive.
They know in the first place that Abbe
ville is one of the best towns in South Car
olina, and to extend the road to Abbeville
is a good business proposition. On this
assurance and with the kindliest spirit
lowuru AUUCVltlW HlfbW Kv,iii<3iuc" how
from the beginning had the fixed purpose
to use thoir influence that a branch road
be extended to this city.
But Abbeville should nut depend on her
sons who have gone out, alone, for her
material growth. The task will be easier
if the citizens at home will do something
for themselves. Highways of traffic seek
the places that furnish freight and passen
ger business. Abbeville is a town of some
live thousand inhabitants. No better mer
chants and business men can bo found
anywhere. In the surrounding ^ountry,
contributory, lands are unexcelled and the
farmers are prosperous. There is plenty
of wealth in the city. A little more of the
spirit of public enterprise is really all that
the city needs to bring it abreast with the
best towns of the up country. A public spir
ited leader could work wonders for Abbe
ville. Contradictory as it may seem, the
towns that grow nre those which "pull
themselves up by their own boot straps."
In a previous editorial we cited the fact
that ? small town in the upper part of
South Carolina, having originally loss tlian
1,000 inhabitants, has built three large
cotton mills since the mill was built here.
Another mill is a necessity for Abbeville.

was very much pleased with the school
situation in Abbeville County. He also
visited Little Rock Buffalo colored school
and made a post card picture of the church
and school house, showing the comparison .
of their line church to the insignificant lit
tie school building besides it. In one of S
his speeches he said there was a white j
church in South Carolina individually sup- .
porting a missionary in Mexico when their
school building in the community was not 1
comfortable. Prof. Tate and Supt. Ham- <
tnond were entertained by Mr. T. J. Britt (

In the Path of the Padres.
Swift, and all-embrcing as has been the
sweep of migration and commercialism in
California, the traces of the Spanish occu
pation have not yet been obliterated. In
deed, in some ways, the remnants of the
old days have been better preserved than
if they had been lift to taeir fate. Strung
along El Camino Real from San Diego
northward to San Rafael like beads along
a roasay are the imposing buildings erect
ed by the pious labors of Padres and neo
phytes. Many of these wonderful miss
ions have been restored and brought to
something like their original magnilicence.
In time all of them will be rescued from
the wasting of neglect, ane the pilgrimage
from one to another will become one of the
features of the sojurn in the land which
has always held a fascination not to be
shaken o?f when once it has laid hold of
one.
