Rounds About the City and Along
Route No. 3.
Bids are now open and ready to be re
ceived for the building of the "New Post
offl :e on lower main street, and we are
to'.d work will begin as soon as birls are
accepted. Putin your bids and lead on
the good work.
We guess the down town people will be
perhaps a ''little tipoish'*
When this grand building is begun, as it
will be in striking contrast to the "Up
town" School building about which there
was so much said?We cant blame them if
they do. as <'dl is fuir in "love and war" as
well as in time of peace.
A negro convict after being knocked in
the head with a gun by the guard, died in
the jail Saturday night. We dou't know
the circumstances, but can't think such
treatment to these poor chained and
shackled creatures right, unless under the
most provoked circumstances. We would
not like to have the blood of any one of
them on our skirts. We only give it as
told us.
Bob Ellison died at his home in this city
, last Monday about 11 o'clock a. m. jx>d
was a back man and altogether was a very
good colored man?he has been bringing
the mails from the trains to the Postofflce
for a long time and as a general thing has
been prompt and regular. He was up and
at the office Sunday afternoon looking af
ter his busiuess?but in so short a time is
numbered with that great throng beyond
the river.
Mrs. L. R. Vose is spending a while with
her daughter, Mrs. Robert Hill, of Atlanta,
where we hope she will have a pleasant
time.
Mrs. Huntley, of Virginia, spent several
days of the past w?ek with her, sister, Mrs.
f McFall.
Prof. Mason .DuPre and |Ms nandsome
little son Arthur of Spartanburg, spent
Saturday and Sunday In the city with
relatives.
Mr. Andrew Edwards, of Georgetown,
is in the city visiting relatives. His many
friends give him a hearty welcome and
are always glad to see him.
Mr. and Mrs. Gregory, of Chicago, are
in the jcity the guests of Mrs. J. G. Ed
wards, her sister. j
Mrs. Richardson after a very pleasant
visit to relatives at Honea Path is home
again.
Mr. William Mahon spent Sunday in the
city.
Mrs. Huckabee, of Georgia, is visiting
her sister-in-law, Mrs. Nance, on Magno

Major Nance is up and about again after
a few weeks indisposition.

health for a long time and the end gave
him a happy release from his intense suf
ferings.
Mr. Minshall was the contractor for the
building of our beautiful Court House and
City Hall which will stand as great and
lasting monuments to his architectural
skill for years to come, and in looking upon
these buildings we will ever remember
Frederick Minshall. The funeral services
were conducted gin Trinity Church
Tuesday morning where many friends as
semble to pay their last sad tribute of es
teem and love to the memory of their de
parted friend. Interment was at Melrose
\ cemetery. A .wife and three children,
with three sisters, one brother and an
aged mother now mourn their great loss,
and are bowed in deepest grief and have
the sincere and tenderest sympathy of the
people of this community.
Nothing doing along route 3, everything
- and everybody shut in by the rain, bad
roads have all at "a standstill except the
rural carriers who make their daily rounds
as usual to the pleasure and joy of their
patrons?who get the news and although
in the country keep up with the current
events of each day.
The Telephone and Bural service are of
great benefit to the patrons at such times
as these and are highly appreciated.
Abbreviated.
Words, says the Houston Post,
should never be subjected to abbreria

an open shame. Mr. Drummond spoke
truthfully when he said'that what the
church needs Is not more of us, but
a better brand of us.
T$iere is a bettor war to lire. There
is a Christian life possible to each
one of us which Is hlghsr and holler
and more rlotorloui than any experi
ence ve have had hitherto. The per*
tectlon of Christian character la the
perfection of faith In Jesus Christ??
the faith that takes'him tobe'all and
In alL Just m bf a simple act of
faith we received the flft of salva*
tlon from the oruelfled Christ we are
to reoelve from the risen Christ 'the*
frace which we need to lire a con
slstent Christian life.
May we not explain our failure to
become what we. hoped to be, and
what Christ wants us to be, because
we do not' understand ~ the difference
between the appreciation of Christ
and the appropriation of Christ? The
Christian church does not lack la ap
preciation sermons, prayers, bjrmns
and testimonies swelling the praise of
Jesus; bdt lack of appropriation Is
shown In Indifference to the claims ot
Christ and the demands of a holy
life, In spiritual unrest twhen Christ
has said, "Peace I leave with you."
and In frequent failure at the same
point In my life. Theee are evidence*
of our neglect to take Christ aa-the
complement of our dally need, of our
neglect to clothe ourselvee with
Chriat, of our lack of appropriation.
As one read the New Testament
three things are made dear:
1. God's purpose, which la to make
ua like Jeeua Christ, although h? uses
various methods by which this end is '
attained. Sometimes the means used
do not teem pleasant to ua, but when
we realise bia high purpose, we shall
be satiafled.
1L Christ's promise, Aa we begin
to understand God's purpose we ask
who Is sufficient for these things; but
In the preeenoe of every high call of
God, of every holy purpose, of every
unattalned ideal, Christ stands and
says, "My graoe la sufficient for you."
And we may oount him faithful who
promised.
BL An adequate power. When we

poee, the faith la Christ's premise,
sod surrender to the spirit that pon- |
etitnte ths elements of that faith
which la ths perfection of Christian
character. So our took of deeper
Christian experience, of power. in
prayer, and of nsefulnsas In serrloe, i

CkxTs purpose nor the wesknees of
Christ's promise, nor the iaok of an
adequate power?our failure Is be

Ood there Is for us fax Christ Jesus.
We are remtaded of Martin Mother,
who said that the entire secret of the
Christian life lies In the use of the
possessive pronouns; that it Is a great
thing to know that Jmvi Is a Bailor,
but a far greater thing to know that
he is mf Savior. In fact, the entire
philosophy of the New Testament
with relation to the Cnrlstlsn ls that
he shall put off ths old man and
shall put on the new.
Therefore, just as br faith 1 ask
Christ to be or sartor let the now
take him for my need of hnmlllty,
purity, strength, wisdom, sanstlflca
tlon, righteousness, redemption?"'AUrj;
I need In thee to And." i " >1
"Orace thara la. my arerjr debt lo yag,;
Blood to wuh my rrery sin away;
Power to keep ma <Uy by day:
For ma, tor ma."
Take Christ, appropriate him, ea
ter upon the full possession and ap
propriation of your great Inheritance
In Christ Jesus. It la the secret of
happy, victorious. Christ-like life.

A BALD-HEADED WDMAN
Shorn of Her Crown of Beauty, Loses in
Love end Marriage.
Hair Is certpinlv most necessary to wo
man. Who could love and marry a bald
beaded woman? What charms could one
array to offset such a disfigurement?
A woman's goal Is usually love and mar
riage. Her crowning glory is her hair.
The loss of her hair mars her beauty, happi
ness, and success. Yet, right here in Ab- '
beville, there are thousands of women
who are neglecting or injuring their tiair
to such an extent that it is only a matter
of time when It will be utterly ruined.
Many women destroy the beauty of their
hair through thoughtlessness or Ignorance
of certain facts. They use curling irons
over-heated, or to excess, which destroys
the natural oil.of, the l?a|r, causing it to
sptft, break, and copietoot. They, do not
shampoo-their hair often'.enough* or too
often. They,use soaps or preparations
which eonttoin ingredients positively harm
ful to the scalp and hair. . ,
As a result of suoh treatment, dandruff
Is created, the hair loosens, loses color.
Tolls out, and baldness commences, unless
oroperandproinpt precautions are taken
in time. Then again, microbes and cer- <
cain diseases bring about unhealthy scalp
vnd hair conditions. !
^'Almost any woman may rid herself of
dandruff and diseased scalp and hair if
