Suggested Enlargement of
Eureka.
The Eureka hotel is one of the lest ho
tels in South Carolina, but its sleeping
apartments are inadequate, and there is
really a scarcity of rooms in the city.
! , The Eureka is run in the best possible
manner by Mrs. McFall. No hotel in
South Carolina has better fare for a regu-1
lar thing, or has better rooms; but more
rooms have for some time been a neces
sity.
The hotel company might do well to tako
a long lease on the second-story rooms of
the two stores of Rosenberg block, near
est to the hotel, and fit them up as hotel
rooms. This could be done by putting in
sky-lights and additional windows. The
two buildings could be connected near the
rear by a neat brick passage, constructed
in such way as to servo as a passage above,
and arched below so as to serve as a porte
cochere. Such a passage-wav could be
made ornamental and would add greatly
to the room accommodations of the hotel.
A Correction.
In last week's Press and Banner, in the
list of cases handed the Grand Jury it was
stated that John W. Leslie was indicted
^for disposing of crop under lien. The case
was thrown out by the Solicitor, as it was

in the matter at all and that the indict
ment should have been against another
.party. This statement is made in justice
to Mr. Leslie.
Fire in Greenwood.
V-, The burning of the Oregon Hotel in
Greenwood Sunday morning is little less
than a calamity to the town. No hotel in
South Carolina was more popular with the
traveling public, or has had more generous
support. It is said that the entire block in
which the hotel was located was burned,
including Chipley's automobile storage
room. The people of Greenwood are pub
lic spirited and will soon build a greater
and better hotel than the one that was de
stroyed by iire.

The attorney general declared that he

Skovgaard To-Night.
The Skovgaard party will play to-night.
Skovgaard is one of the first violinists in
the land. He is master of his profession.
The story of his violin reads like a novel.
Music lovers 'will not soon have such an
opportunity of hearing a master. Skov
gaard played last summer at Palm Beach,
Fla., for 500 per night. This indicates the
class of entertainer he is.
If you would hear the greatest violinist
in America today go to hear Skovgaard
tonight.
Work of Rural Police.
The'criminal court which closed here
last week had one of the heaviest dockets
that we recall for many years. The most
striking feature of the court was the num
ber of convictions. There were about sev
enteen trials for various offenses, amongst
them for murder, arson and like grave of
fenses and there were thirteen convic
tions. In two lighter offenses the con

dollars each, and eleven were sent to the
county chaingang.
In several of the murder cases and in at
least one case of arson the evidence was so
conclusive that the parties confessed. In
these cases, the rural police were early On
the scene and worked up the evidence ef
fectually.
The rural police have proven more than
self sustaining, and the revenue in the
way of fines has not come from trivial of
fences. They have been of great value in
getting evidence in the gravest cases.
It has been objected that they have fill
ed the jail. While this is largely a fact,
they have filled them by capturing some
af the worst criminals in the county.

well past the experimental stage, when a
year's service has been completed in this
county, a complete summary of their
work should be given to the public.
Doubtless tho police could well afford to
stand or fall on their record.
Citizens Asks a Pertinent Ques
tion.
What steps has the Abbeville Board of
Trade taken toward inviting the traveling

Ominous Meaning ot Proclama
tion Issued By Taft.
Washington, March 4.?President Taft's
warning to all Americans in Mexico that j
they could no longer look to this govern-1
I meat for protection and his advice that
j they leave the disrupted country ?s soon
j as possible, paves the way for intervention
by the Uuited States.
This fact will be offiically denied today,
just as it had been officially denied in the
past, but officially who know what the ad
ministration has in mind, say there is no
other meaning back of the moves made by
the president.
MOVE MADE OBYIOUS.
To make this move obvious the state de
prtment invited the representatives of the
Spanish, French, German and British gov
ernments to the department and communi
cated the program to them. The procla
mation and the dispatch to Ambassador
Wilson at Mexico City were placed in their
hands and were immediately cabled to
their governments.
It is frankly stated by officials here that
the Madero administration is in an ab
solutely helpless condition. The Mexican
president is losing more territory daily
and it is freely predicted than within a
month the revolutiotlsts wall lay siege to
Mexico City itself.
There are still more than 30,000 Ameriean
s in Mexico. They are scattered from end
to end of the country and all of them are
in more or less danger. The advice sent
out to them by Ambasssdor Wilson from
Mexico City warned these Americans that,
under the present conditions, their gov
ernment was unable to afford them any
protection. They were told to seek safely
in their own country.

Persons Who Have Tested It Say Rheu
matic Pains Vanish, Appetite Grows
and Indigestion Disappears as
if by Magic.
To the many local people who have
followed the recent startling reports
of Htrange cure* that have been
brought ahout by the usa of the new
Root Juice mediciue, which has cre
ated ho much excitement in Atlanta
and other plucks, the following de
scriptions of its remarkable efFe-t U[>
on diseased conditions in many cases
will be found most interesting.
Mr. Albert Tiiulick, ofCantrall, III.,
who was a great sufferer from indiges
tion, los->of appetite, pains, bloating,
belching an^l other common symp
toms of a badly deranged stomach,
tells this story of his experience : "My
condition was such that I could not
keep down a glass of water. I had
suffered for two years and tried many
kinds of medicines without benefit. I
was almost dead one evening, when I
sent for a bottle of the Root Juice and
felt better as soon as.I had taken three
or lour doses. 1 kept on using it and
now I can keep anything on my stom
ach. Root Juict has done wonders for
me."
Mr. Dt P. Kerr, of Bellefontaine, O.,
tells the following story of his experi
ence with the medicine : j
"( was the victim of severe stomach
and kidney trouble and grew weak,
thin and nervous from the long and
aiifropinor Mv stomach
VUUIlUUUUn uuvt...e. ^
*as sore and painful. Most of the
time I could not digest my food. I
would get up in the morning with a
headache and so weak I could scarce
ly dress myself. I frequently had bil
ious spells, coated tongue, bad taste
in my mouth and smothering senpa
tlon. My kidneys would act often but
very scunt and painful."
"I spent many dollars for medicines i
and treatment but could not even get
relief. When this new medicine, Root
Juice, became known here, I was one ^
of the flrst to get ir. Before long I no
ticed an improvement. I am on my
fourth bottle now and feel much better
in every way. My appetite i.* good. I
sleep well, I eat what I want and di
gest my food. The soreness has gone
from my stomach and my kidneys no
longer give me any trouble. I am
fr^e from headaches, am gaining in
strength and have gained in weight."
Others who have used it for rheuma
tism say that its eirect is marvelous
u^d that after taking it a short time
the pain and soreness vanish. The
stiffness goes and the swelling poou
dinappears, the joints and Ilmhs be
come limber and strong and the gen
eral health improves. N
Local druggists can now supply the
Root Juice in three-quarter pint bot
tles at only one dollar each.
