Interesting Letter from Barnwell
Aiken.
Off Fisherman's Point,
Guantanama, Cuba,
. January ii, i-ji^.
Dear Daddy?I don't know what you are
thinking about me for not writing you
sooner, but our plans have miscarried.
Instead of reaching here last Saturday as
was expected we won't get in until tomor
row, Saturday, one week late.
We left Hampton Roads the 4th and
started for the Southern Drill grounds to
meet the fleet, but instead of meeting the
fleet we met a storm that caused a great
deal of damage and the supposed loss of
the U. S. S. Mayrant, a torpedo boat which
was with us at the time. There were two
tarpedo boats with us and both were lost
for three days. We picked up U. S. S. Pat
terson which was with us. and she sig
nalled that she was out of bread; had no
wireless at all, but was ready to proceed
to Cuba, as her boilers and engines were in
good shape. We supplied her with three
days supply of bread and some fresh fruit.
Nothing vet has l>een heard of the May
rant and the search has about been given
up, and it is supposed that she was broken
In two. (
While the Idaho pitched and rolled and
shipped plenty of water, still we came
through o. k. and none the worse for out
rough treatment.
You remember the chest you were sit
ting on just inside the door when you
came to see me off last summer, well,
that deck was flooded with, four inches of
water. Where the guns come out the side
the water came in in great volume. The
Suarter-deck, where you came aboard, was
ke this most of the time. Either one side
or the other went under water every tim<
she rolled. We weren't able to set oui
tables to the deck for two days, and had to
eat "on the fly"?sandwiches, coffee and
plenty of cake and fresh fruit. Taking all
Fn all we were pretty well shaken up and
I thank God that we came out alive. Ex
cept for the Mayrant we are all safe, and
If she did go down, I suppose there will b?'
a collection taken up among the fle6t or
something of that sort for the survivors'
wives and children who were left destitute.
It is reported that the Idaho has been
granted permission to go to New Orleans
for the Mardl Gras In February. I don't
know whether that Is true or not, but if it
Is we will all have a mighty good time, a?
last June every one asked us to come back
again.
I guess there will be the usual routine
down here this year as it was last?coal
ship, trial speeds and the like.
Jan. 12,1912, 6 a. m.
Well, the "mud hook" or anchor has fal
len and the mail orderly will leave in half
an hour. We heard as we came in that the
Mayrant had been found and was on her
way to Guantanama now. So outside of
losing a few boats, six men lost overboard
from the different ships?none from the
Idaho?the fleet is in good shape.
Well, I want to get this off, so will pay
good-bye. Much love to every one. Hope
every one is wen.
Your devoted son,
Barnwell Aiken.

EDUCATION NECESSARY.
The Head, Heart, Hands And Feet Neod
( Traning
Education is a art of drawing out or dev
eolping tbo faculties of traning human be
ings for the functions for which they were
destined.
Man is either reducetion for good or evil,
by "everything that he experience from the
cradle to the grave, therefore, we should
strive to get such an education that would
cause the wourld to be made better because
of our being in it.
We shou d educate our head, heart, hands
and feet. (1) We should educate our head
in order that we might be able to under
stand and solve the problems that might
confront us. (2) We should educate our
h<mrt so that we might be instrumental in
winning souls for Christ. (3) We ahould
educate the hands so that we might be able
to do with all our might whatsoever our |
hands find to do. (4) We should educate |
our feet to walk in the etaigt and narrow ;
path that leads earth to heaver.
We should strive to trein the children \
while they are yeung for good, in order j
that they might be useful ih fostering the j
cause of educition.
The chiof educators are the home and
neigeborhood, and they should have a
good Chrlstirn influence so that the child
might be taught the fear to do evil. It
should also be taught self-control, love of
truth, obedience and to reverence what is
good and great, because it is then when
they form their habits and all but the
mere outWard form is beyond the power
of direct teaching for they have been im
bibed though the silent influence of ex
ample.
It is true that the school and professson
al educators only play a part along with
othei s influence, but it is very imoprtant
part which every one seould try to obtain.
There is something for each one of us to
do, and in order that we might be abe to
do it as it should be done, we should strive
to get a broader knowledge of it, and a
thorough understanding of how it should
be done, so that we might be able to pre
form it in the best way possible.
There is no limit to the degree of intelli
gence that is desirable in any class of
people, but for a vast majority of the race
there is a very small degree obtainable.
Therefore it should be considered what is
most needed, and we should try to accom
plish that aim.
The day is growing more enlightened
and it demands better service, and we
should strive to repair ourselves to meet
the requirement. So let us not be content
with a small bit of learning, but let each of
us strive to go onward and upward until
we too shall have better prepared ourselves
to do service for the Master.
It has been said by wise men of old,
"If you covet learning's gase, climb her
heights and take it."
In ourselves the fortune lies. Life is
what we make it.
Minnie N. Beaty.
Advice
I've been though the mill, my boy,
I have bumped the bumps of fate,
I've seen gold turn out alloy,
I've seen friendship charge to hate,
I've seen plans go for astray
When it seemed they must succeed,
Take a tip from me today,
Never go a bove your speed,
Never spend a cent unearned.
Never gamble on the morrow,
Here's a lesson man has learned
Very often to his sorrow
Let an old man tell you now
Serve a lettle?you may need,
Gaurd yourself, and anyhow
Never go aboveyour speed.
I've been though the mill. I know
Just how easy life appears
To the eyes of youth, but, oh,
Far down the lane of years
Disappointments wait for you'
Vain will be regrets, indeed,
Keep your heart and purpose true.
HfcNever go above your speed.

Opera House, Jan. 30th,
General Aiken in Washington.
Spartinburg Jurnol,
Wasington, Jan. 16?when Congressman
Wyatt Aiken arrieved in Washington the
entire delegation from South Carolina was
here in force. Mr. Aiken had been detajned
at home a brief spell, due to sickness in
his family. One of the "Washington cor
respondents, seeing Mr. Aiken in un office
talking to a friend, strolled in and began
his query for news this way:
"Well, judge, what do you know?"
"Don't call me judge," returned Mr.
Aiken. "All the judges come from Georgia
and oil the colonels from Kentucky."
"I'm a little averse to titles," continued
the congressman, "but I'll have to tell you
what I told a man at the Dewey Hotel re-,
ceitly. I wasCthere with somei friends,
chatting in the lobby, when a man walked
up and said: 'Is this Judge Aiken?' 'No,
sir.' 'Well, Col. Aiken, then' he persisted.
'No; slr-ee,' i replied, 'nether Judge Aiken
nor Col. Aiken, out Gen. Aiken, if you are
determined to give me a title?so I'll have
no title but "general," young man, though

The Unostentation Peanut
So long as the American people had
sense enough to consume *36,000,000 worth
of peanuts per annum, real poverty will
never come to the south side of ola Vir
ginia.
Of course, the pauper-raised peanut of
East India has no better tast than to com
pete with the only original article, which
is found at its best near Petersburg. And
what a best that is!
Of all known nuts, the unostentatlons
goober is the richest in food value. Scien
tists say that it contains more tissue-build
ing properties than any of its fellows, and,
? * - A ? ' - AL X-i. I ~Urxr,
Willi t lb more WJ LI1W puilll. lUiiuouco iuoiu
for less money. From the standpoint of
economy and gastronomy, the peanut Is
the banner-bearer of all that class of food
which the human being has eaten from the
time the pome "quadrumanous, arborel,
hairy ancestor" swung from the treetops
of Africa until this dao and year olsilk hats,
automobiles and pre-digested breakfast
foods.
Even so, the peanut deserves the prize,
for 350 of them cau be bought for 10 cents,
and, when bought, 73.6 per cent goes for
food, while only 26.4 is waste, and of the
edible portion 80 per cent is fat-forming.
No wonder, then that this modest nut,
when cooked, candied,salted,sugared, and
sold, reaches the enormous value of $36,000,
000.
If one touch of Nature makes the whole
world kin, certainly the peanut is a touch
that makes men, pigs, chichens, cows, all
appreciate at one time the real, delights of
that neversatisfying tidbit?the peanut.

He replied that the greatest difficulty,
