Who are Exempt I
from Obedience to
the Commandments ?
Some time ago we commented severely ^
upon Senator E. D. Smith's recent speech
at Abbeville, because we were taught by
the Press and Banner that the remarks z
were so full of irreverence as to be indeed q
profanity. The same paper now makes t
similar accusations against the Rev. Dr.
Cody's remarks in the pulpit. We repro- +
duce these latter in order to show no par- a
tiality against Senator Smith, and because
we realize that Dr. Cody will not be injured c
thereby.?Anderson Mail. j.
The remarks about Dr. Cody's speech at s
the dedication of the Abbeville Baptist ^
churoh were not intended to injure him, e
but to do him good. It was merely a pro- o
test at what we regarded as irreverence, 8
or as the useless or vain repetition of the
Name which we are forbidden to take in u
"vain." The English language is suffi- c
ciently comprehensive to furnish words ?
that would enable the ciiltured and tal
ented speaker to express every human o
thought. It abounds in synonyms and ?
pronouns, any one of which may be used
without the risk of incurring the divine
displeasure, or incurring the penalty which
attaches to the vain repetition of His
name.
We did not seek to injure Dr. Cody. We
are informed that he was largely instru
mental in securing material aid in the
building of our magnificent temple. The
people of Abbeville have reason to be very
thankful t!b him. If we had known of his
labors in our behalf we should have made
mention of his good work, and should
have rendered to him profound and hearty
thanks.
But as to the seeming disregard of the
Third Commandment: '
"Thou shalt not take the name of the
Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will
not hold him guiltless that taketh his
name in vain." N
To whom were these words spoken?
Were they spoken to graceless scamps in
the market places; or were they directed
*to vulgarians on the street; or were they
addressed to rapscallions on the highway?
No; they were addressed to neither of
these, but to Moses, the religious leader of
the Lord's own chosen people. Why
should religious people of today use the
Lord's name as a play thing? Should it
be so common as to bo a meaningless
nothing.
Who, today, disregards the Second Com
mandment? Iti it the Jew? Or is it the
Christian? Where is the respectable Jew
who ever called the Lord's name one hun
dred and twenty times, or fifty times, or
three times In one half hour? Will any of
those Christians who speak the Name as
freely as they would call the name o{ Jim
Johnson or John Jones, be kind enough to
toll us where they get their authority to
do that which the best of us are forbidden
to do? How do they expect to escape the
divine displeasure for so plain a disregard
of the commandment? Where has the
a# fKa aM foofn no anf Kflnn o Vi rrv_
uuuimauu ui 1110 UIV i^ouauivuv i^v^u umi
gated or changed to meet latter day con
ditions?
"Thou shalt not take the name of the
Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will
not hold him guiltless that taketh his
name in vain."
Our own testimony would be, that, ex
cept amoDg the clergy, wc hear very few
"vain" repetitions of the name. Viola
tions of the Third Commandment are
few, except among the clergy. The laity (
as a rule, are not profane. Instances of
profanity on the part of laymen are rare.
It is a pleasure to note that talented and
cultured clergymen are generally rever
ential.
An anonymous friend kindly sends us
an extract from the Spartanburg Journal.
That DaDer seems to think that it is per
fectly legitimate to call the Name, "when
talking seriously."
"for I the Lord thy God arn a jealous God,
visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon
the children unto the third and fourth
generation of them that hate me, and
shewing mercy unto thousands of them
that love me and keep my command
ments."
"Thou shalt not take the name of the
Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not
hold him guiltless that xaketh his name in
Vain."
Besides religious people who make free
use of the Name, there are others. Would
you punish one man, and let the other go
free ?
Tf it. Ic wrnnc for Snnator Smith, or anv
other laj'man, to make irreverent use of
the holy Name how can religious men ex
pect to be pxcused for desecrating the holy
temple by inauy "vain" repetitions of the
sacred Name.
The Anderson Mail of a later date con
tains a note from a lady whose name we
have forgotten. We would publish her
letter but have lost the paper containing
It.
She thinks Mr. Wilkins and Dr. Cody
were' entirely reverential, bub she neg
lected to give her opinion of Mr. Bristow's
prayers of "invocation" and "dedication."
From our view point both prayers were as
reverential as the human heart and the
English language could make.
That those of us who are ignorant may
bo informed, we challenge Dr. Cody, and
hi6 apologists, to show scriptural authori
ty wherein he has a right to make even
fifty "vain" repetitions of the Holy Name
in one half hour. As rule, gentlemen on
the 6treet are reverential. "Why should
not the same rule apply to preachers and
other public speakers? . H. W.

PROTEST. AGAINST INSURANCE MO
NOPOLY:
?o the Members of the General Assembly
of the State of South Carolina : 1
We, the undersigned residents and citi
ens of the City of Abbeville, .hereby re
[uest you to support the bill introduced in
he Senate by Horn J. Moore Mars,, iit
tructing the Insurance Commissioner not
o license any Fire Insurance Company tc
lo business in South Carolina which is a
nomber of the South-Eastern Tariff Asso
iatlon or any other organization whose
iurpose is to fix rates for insurance in
aid State.
Only recently the property of this city
ias been re-rated and the rates in almost
very instance have been increased, with
ne or two exceptions, and in some in
tances the rates nave been doubled with
mt any apparent cause therefor.
It i^ practically impossible for business
aen in the City of Abbeville to carry suffi
lent insurance on ineir ounaiugs ana
tocks of merchandise for the reason that
he rate is prohibitive.
The sole purpose of this organization, in
ur judgment, is to destroy competition,
ix arbitrary rates of insurance, and thus
o rob tho people by demanding exorbi
ant rates for the insurance d? property.
Some years ai?o when a similar bill was
lassed by the General Assembly the rates
f insurance'in the City of Abbeville were
onsiderably lowered and It was possible
o -get property insured at reasonable
ates, but immediately upon the repeal of
bat Act insurance began to Increase and
a our judgment will continue to increase,
ntil the unlawful combination represent
d by the South-Eastern Tariff Assocla
[on is driven from the State.
The statements herein represent condi
ions in the City of Abbeville, but similar
onditions exist in practifially every town
nd city in the State and rot this reason
re feel that this matter is of vital interest
o every citizen and should have the earn
8t consideration of each member of the
teneral Assembly.

may have of conditions in the County, 51
: as to lawlessness. While the percent ,
of arrests will run much higher than
for a like period pf any previous year,
, this fact is explained by the greater ;
vigilance of this service. Two men i
are not,, sufficient for giviag the . best

whereabouts, the promptness with
which every call has ,been met, and
the 3uccess thus far met with, have .
created a dread of the service in the <

one instance has there been a failure i
to make arrest in response to a call,
and in all probability that arrest will
be made later.
The following is a condensed state
