B v?' * f < Although there was a downpour all ^ m/traincr vof A tTftftt multitude of OUT i\ people assembled in the new Baptist a church last Sunday morning to re- 1 jolce with and to show fraternal and ? kindly feelings for their Christina brethren and co-workers who have 'l just finished their splendid house of < worship. All of our people rejoice ' with -the Baptists in building', their magnificent temple, which'for beauty < of construction and for architectural 1 skill is, perhaps, unexcelled. In less than forty years the congregation of , three mtembers has grown to be nu- j merically a power of Christian prog- . ress and a factor in sweetening the lives of our people. Under the lead- >. fershlp and inspiration of their beloved pastor, the Rev. Louis Bristow, their ] k'ct in building this church Is perhaps without a pareiiet in ine matorjr m r any organization. In the seventies, Mrs, Agnes W. i Quarles, Mrs. Stephen A. Braezeale and Mr. R. P. Quarles assembled to ! organize the Baptist church at Ab- j bevllle, and the result has proved that ] our Saviour has fulfilled his promise to this people when he said, "For -^ei^-two or three are gathered to gether in my name I am in the midst of then*" A clearer or a more spe cific fulfillment of the Saviour's prom ise is not to be found. Without his onr? withnut hia insnlration piCOCUVV UUU , how could 90 small a beginning ac complish such a glorious result as the founding of this strong congrega tion and the building of this magnifi cent temple, and its dedication to Him who came to save. For any people to build the finest church in this part of the whole coun try is not only a proud accomplish ment, but it is the strongest evidence of divine favor. Stories of the mar tyrdoms of the saints of old are not more imposing than the Christian zeal, the personal pride, and the sen sacrifice of this people as /shown In building such a great temple to the worship of the Most High. The very air of the church was per vaded by a spirit of fraternal feeling, a sense of Christian fellowship and a pious devotion to Him from whom comes every blessing. The singing and the music were de lightful and impressive and the invo cation by the pastor was reverential, and met a responsive echo in every heart As a ' spectator we wish we could say the same for the prayer by Mr. Wilkins, and the remarks by Mr. Cody. Aside from his disrega the Second Commandment, waf did r.l > > *!?-I.- :?-1 not discover the appropriateness of the speech. To us it seemed a mis fit for the occasion and the place. We were not. prepared to believe Mr. Cody is editor of the Baptist Courier, whfch Is a model of reverence. For reverence It Is the eqnal of the South ern Christian Advocate, which paper has a standard of reverence as high aB that of the highest and beat of the secular papers. - For weeks we have been thinking of asking the Courier to call upon the clergy to adopt its own high methods. Hence our unpre paredness to hear Mr. Cody take the name of the Lord on his Hps. for a hundred times in one halfrhour in the temple which had been erected to the glory of him who Is the Author of oar very being. Hie lack of reverence for the holy name most have been simply shocking. 'Whatever his education he utterly failed to use synomyms or pronouns. Our own testimony would be that 'it was the most Irreverent speech that we ever heard, not except-' ing the harrangue of any evangelist or ignorant Irreligious preacher. . In the building' of this magnificent temple, and in^the dedication of this splendid structure to the worship of the' Most Hlfeh there was no conten tion among the members, except that glorious contention as to who could best; work and best agree. In their abundance' they cast in according as they had been prospered, arid thofee who were less fortunate gave to the full extent of their ability;. and no'man appropriated more than an equal share of the honors.
