P" lr Colics Of Horses And Mules I ?> _ I nt ji{ One of the most common juul alarming' 1'" deceased conditions occurring in horses ' and mules is that of colic. The term is a'. very loose one, being generally used to |}j denote any abdominal pain whatever, and )0V. it may readily be inferred that it therefore l?i occurs in a great variety of diseases. It E C however only necessary here to consider it under two heads, viz., spasmodic colic ami. j" due to impaction or obstruction of the j bowels. i)i Spasmodic, colic is probably of the most Am frequent occurence and consists of a vio- "i lent contraction of the muscles of the in- w"' testifies causing intense pain. It is usually ]Hn) brought on by giving large amounts of! n cold water to a horse over-heated; by ex- i. i, posing such*a horse to chilling rains after i> a hard drive: sometimes by giving a heavy ?|,,! feed of green succulent feed; and^in horses * j that are predisposed to it, a sudden change J j, of diet may he all that is necessary to.HP,,i bring on an attack. l?i The condition is recognized by the horse law suddenly showing symptoms of intense pain following some "of the causes above j" mentioned; stamping violently with one j{lH( hind foot; looking around at the Hanks ui with an anxious expression; sweating; ly- inn ing down suddenly and lolling in agony, L> and with occasional periods of freedom A-f from pain followed by similar attacks. Colic from impaction, .as the name indi- D| cates, is a condition in which thero is a SOn. partial or complete stoppage of the bowels, 1)1 and may be brought 011 by overloading the l-? stomach when in a tired out condition and w.particularly with dry, innutritions feed. A T)^ faultv condition of the teeth may also be d a predisposing feature on account or ira- Low perfect mastication of the food. This con- D Uition is accompanied by constipation and the animal 6hows evidences of a continu- . ^ ous dull pain as compared with that of jj; spasmodic colic, moving stiffly lying down j. q occasionally and groaning duo to absence i>i of violent movements It also runs a Ant longer course usually than spasmodic D' COliC. ' i\| While it is always advisable to consult a qualified voterinarin when possible, this is ' oj frequently impracticable on account of the won small number of veterinarians in this state, # I> and every horse owner ought to have souks I'-f intelligent idea ah to how to recognize and , 1,1 treat the condition. In spasmodic colic it is evident that a h. 'J sedative or narcotic treatment should be di resorted to in order to overcome the vio- pou lent contraction and relieve the pain. One I-> of the best remedies is fluid extract of Cannabis indica, or Indian hemp given In doses p ^ of six drams by the mouth. This brings "u on drowsiness and as a rule by the^ime j. i; the drowsiness has worn off the colic 'has U! disapoeared. Another good remedy is choloral hydrate given in doses of one ounce dissolved in a pint of water; or if a hypod^rmie syringe be available, two KOn! grains of sulphate of morphine may be i> dissolvedin a little water that has been "?n boiled and allowed to cool and injected un- D der the skin. With impaction colic, entirely different. ^ remedies am needed, the object being to b unload the intestines of the offending M. 1 material. For this purpose flvo grains o!' Di aloes dissolved in a quart of hot water and J ' and conjoined with one ounce of oil of tur- T y pen tine and one dram of. fluid extract of nux vomica may be given: or if this is not w. conveniently at hand, one and a half pints D of linseed oil may be given, and if there is E-1 mnoh nnin three drams of Can- _,V CMUClItU V* t> nabis Indiea may also be given. Copious * jlj' rectal injections ?f soap suds-are beneficial ^ also. These remedies will usually sufiice, w. but if more drastic treatment is necessary 1)1 it should be entrusted to a veterinarian. Dr* Much can be done In the way of proven- H ^ tion and by referring to the causes men- jjj tinned the methods of prevention will sug- ler?, seat themselves. y( Dr. E. Barnett. chai S. C.
