Whether we build cotton mills or whether we do not build cotton mills Is a matter of little concern. We have two of the best state ollicors who are now in Columbia. \Comptroller General A. W. Jones has served the people so long and so faithfully that ho will be reelected unanimously. * Recognizing his ability, efficiency, and popularity, no son-of-a-gun has presumed to take the place which he has held so long. I And there is Attorney General J. Frasier Lyon, who has done wonders in recovering for the state greaf piles of money from the liquor dealers who had been selling booze to the dispensaries. He has raked into the treasury of this state dirty dollars from their hiding place and yet his hands are clean; his acts and his mind are without , reproach. And it is especially gratifying to Ills many friends in his old home town to notice the many nice things that are being said of him almost daily in the different newspapers of the State. The people, not only in Abbeville, but in ail the state, have faith in J. Frasier Lyon. "We are not going to have any trouble i here this morning, my friends," said Mr. Lyon. "There have beed several courses suggested to me in regard to the charges that Barney Evans has been making about me. One was that I should go to every meeting and denounce vhem. Another was that I should disre gard them entirely, as every one knows Barney. And the third that I should go out only occasionally and tell the people the truth. I shall prabably adopt a combination of these because if I do not answer these charges at all Barney may tell these fairy tales of his own invention until he actually believes them him-self. * j t *jn a iormer occasion x ucueu j^vtuin ia> prove a single charge he has made. That was two weeks ago and up to tiiis time he has not submitted one particle of evidence to prove a single statement he has made except his own vain vaporings. NOT IN THE BOOK. "In regard to the statement that I haw received the sum of $18,300 in commissions i or fees, as stated by Barney Evans," Mr. Lyon said, "there is absolutely no such statement in the book from which ho pretended to read it. What do you think of j< man who has the gall to do a thing liki that?"Mr. Lyon took up one by one the charges that Evans has made and one b\ one refuted them, not asking that the people take his statement but showing officio 1 sworn statements from the governor, the comptroller, from the State treasurer, from Dr. Murray and from the clek of court. "It is up to you gentlemen," said Mr. Lyou. "Dd you believe Barnoy or do you believe Comptroller Jones and Dr. Murray and th > clerk of the court of Richland county ?" Mr. Lyon read an affidavit showing that the so-called merger suit is on the docket I of the Richland court and is set for trial for the fall term. This is the case which, Evans said, had been dismissed by collusI ion between Lyon and the attorney for the railroad on account of personal friendship between them. He went into the matter of his expense account and said that Evans had misrepresented it knowing ly. He had received nothing from the State in-fees or commissions and he presented and read an affidavit showing this. The people of South Carolina were willing he t; / was sure to pay his personal expenses whileihe was on their business and he had not received one cent except what was due him according to the law. THE " PINTER PUP." In regard to the charges of misappropriating funds and robbing the schools of the State, Mr. Lyon said that if Evanshad i "the intelligence or honesty to examine the acts of 1910 he would find" where the money in question had oeen appropriated to the use of the public schools and -where it would be paid them at the rate of ?60,000 a year until the sum './as exhausted. Referring to Evans' record before the supreme court of the State of which he had boasted, Mr. Lyon said that a careful examination of the records of the court showed that Barney had appeared in nine cases and of these he had lost seven because he didn't know how to draw his pleadings. The most prominent case in which he had appeared was one appealed from a magistrate's court in Saluda and which involved the possession of a "pinter pup" and, said Mr. Lyon, "he lost it." Mr. Lyon had advanced money from his own personal funds to hire detectives to trail the grafters, and he said "they came very near catching Barney's cousin, 'Hub?" "Do any of you think tiiat if you elect Barney attorney general he would prosecute his Cousin Hub?" asked the attorney general. "I don't think he would." WILL LAUGH AT THEM. In the course of his speech to-day B. B. Evans had repeated the statement made many times previously that Mr. Lyon, the attorney general, had confessed his incompetence to argue a case in the United States supreme court by employing 1). S. . Henderson of Aiken to go there to argue a case against a negro lawyer and at the ?. expense of the State. My employment in this case was not at the suggestion of Mr. Lyon." he said, "and was at no expense to the State. I was employed by the South Carolina congressmen because I had some experience in such eases. It was not to answer negro lawyers that the argument was made but to instruct the court. I regard Mr. Lyon as a very able lawver. He certainly made a very able argument before the court and it was upon his argument that the opinion of the court was based." HISSED BY CROWD. As Mr. Henderson concluded and introduced Attorney General Lyon, Mr. Evans arose and attempted to make some reply, but the crowd hissed and yelled ' sitdown" I "Let him speak" said Mr. Lyun. "I will J give him as much or my time us ne uesires," but Mr. Evans grave over his effort and retired to a corner partly out of sight, where he walked about while Mr. Lyon was making his talk. Aside from the interest in the reply of Mr. Lyon to Evans' charges, the meeting to-day was a good one. There were numbers present both of men and women. The meeting was held in a spacious court room, wjiich was comfortable despite the crowd and the enthusiasm was at the overflowing point. All of the speakers were given enthusiastic receptions p.nd the applause was the loudest yet heard upon the campaign. v r a New Mill for Laurens With $400,000 Capitalization New Enterprise is Launched. Nobody is Scared in Laurens. Laurens, July 11.?Application will be made to the secretary of state for a com-, mission, under which will be organized a company for the purpose of building a new cotton mill in Laurens* The corporation will be capitalized at $400,000, and it is proposed to break dirt for the erection of the plant as early as practicable after complying with formalities incident to effecting the oranizatlon of the company. At the suggestion of Capf J' Adger Sruyth, Jr., president of the Watts Cotton Mills here, and one of the promoters of the new enterprise. "Connemare" has^een determined as the name of the new mill, the name being of Irish origin and associated with manufacturing interests with which the ancestors of the Smyths were indentified in Ireland. The site has not been selected, but it is understood that it will be located within the city limits. The promoters of the enterprise went about the work in a quiet way until abont ten days ago, when committees, representing the Laurens Chamber of Commerce, got in the field and pushed the campaign of raising the town's quota of the proposed capital stock to a linish yesterday afternoon.
