CONFERENCE MUSIC AT
THE METHODIST CHURCH
Delayed Account of the Grand Music 2t
M. E. Church on the 12th, with Short
Sketches of the Singers and Organist.
For want of space this general comment
on the Sunday Conference music at tinFirst
Methodist Church was inadverdenlly
omitted in last weeks issue.
The great Conference has come and
gone and everybody is delighted with it*
grand success and good work accomplished.
The Sunday services at the Methodist
Church were especially tine. Both sermons,
by Rev. Waterhouse and Dr. Snyder,
were grand efforts, long to be remembered.
Then the music by that choir of
well known artists will never be forgotten.
Without question or debate these were the
two most elaborate church musical
triumphs ever rendered in Abbeville or in
upper Carolina, and the whole press of the
state has eulogized its rendition, and it
has been the talk of Church and State?hut
with such vocalists and such an organist
how could it have been otherwise?
Miss Lenore Neville Long, colorature
soprano soloist, head of the vocal department
at Due West Female College, an
artiste of the first rank, outsarig nersuu
in the "Inflammatus" of Rossini's immortal
"Stabat Mater," Millard's "Judicabit."
and "De Torrente," showing the greatest
flexibility of phrasing and distinctness of
enunciation, proving herself to be master
of her art. She has studied with Shakespeare,
of London, and Hitter, of Berlin.
The bird-like sweetuess of her voice, and
her charming manners have mado her a|
great favorite here and the writer ton-!
siders her one of the greatest lyric soSranos
(if not the greatest) in South Carona.
Miss Mary E. Chreitzberg, solo contralto
of Converse College, Spartanburg,
pleased universally with her beautfful,
round, rich, deep voice of such magnificent
range and timbre. So sympathetic,
mellow, and full of warmth was it that her
duet with Miss Long in the "Te Deum"
brought tears to the eyes of some in the
immense congregation, as did her solo in
the "Gloria." "With her charming manners
and strong personality she will always
be a welcome guest to Abbeville and
the Methodist choir, to whom she has
greatly endeared herself. We consider
her the finest cultivated contralto in this
state without exception.
Now let us note Mrs. Jas. L. McMillan,
the regular choir soprano soloist, and how
beautifully she acquitted herself in the
"Gloria in Excelsis" and "Veni Creator."
She sang that most pathetic "Qui Tollis"
with such artistic hnish and sympathy,
that she also gathered tears from the audience
and held them in breathless silence.
Her solo at the evening service was also
most beautifully rendered. Then Mrs.
Ellis, Mrs. Coleman, Miss Blanche Gary,
and Mr. Hill, all sang their parts to perfection.
Mr.1 Richard Plenge, who responded
from Charleston, was a most valuable ac
quisition to the choir, singing me nauwutand
bass solo parts. He was true to score
and skilful in rendition. His voice is a
rich baritone of excellent timbre, inherited
from his lovely mother, Madame Plenge,
who for 30 years was soprano soloist of
Grace Episcopal Church in the City by the
Sea. Besides this, she was the leading vocal
teacher there for the same number of
years. She was endeared to all she ever
came in contact with, and retired only a
few years ago to private life.
Mr. Osborne Basso of Anderson was also
a valuable assistant and with hisjrich and
powerful bass voice added much to the
grand ensembles of the choruses and anthems.
He is a member of the Methodist
church of the electric city above us.
Now, last but not least, we must say
something of Prof. Huguelet, our most
efficient organist and choir master, who
brought this Conference music to such a
high standard of perfection. And we all
think his perseverance has reaped its reward
by tne kind letters and telegrams he
has received from three states full of congratulations,
"well dones," etc, He never
fails in any musical function he under
takes, and always comes out on top t?y nis
perseverance and hard work. He has the
reputation from musical critics and authorities
as being the most tasteful and
ablest organist in the state, and as an organizer,
none can equal him. His musical
functions are notaDle in several large
cities, especially in Charlrston where he
was natured. In Atlanta also he has prospered
among the profession, where he did
considerable church and quartette work,
besides giving recitals to the elite on
Peachtree Street. We thank him for his
masterly performance on Conference Sunday
of making that grand choir sing, and
that great pipe organ talk.

THE COTTON TREE.
Not many people know that there is such
a thing as a cotton tree, there is however
In most tropical countries such a tree. It
grows to be as large as our oaks here in
in the temperate zone. The fruit is siwi
lar to the pod of the vine commonly know
here as "Cow itch" the two pods are similar
in minrnnrt similar in shaDe. The pod
of the cotton tree is much larger.
When the cotton tree is ready to give up
its fruit the pods fall off and burst open
The ground beneath the tree is completely
covered with the lint which scatters like a
shattered "cat tail."
The cotton is of a very short liber, not
longer than the finger nail, but is never
very usefuf. Most tropical people do not
use mattresses but they do use pillows
galore all these pillows are stuffed with
th is cotton. Owing to the shortness of the
lint it will not become nappy like ordinary
cotton when used in this way.
This question of-cotton supply would be
forever settled should some wizard like
Burbank lengthen the lint of the cotton
tree.
The latest folly from the fat witted,
feather brained, feeble minded femininity
who engineer tho | fashions, is the aero
plane hat. The merry widow monstrosity
was not enough. Now it is mo no planes
bl planes, tri planes, balloons! Of course
the price will be in keeping with the
^ names.
Central American citizens in Mexico City
have served up to "Uncle Sam" a dainty
bit of protest over his treatment of Zelaya,
saying that "Uncle Sam's" note is not
inspired by a friendly government act,
intimating that it behooves the live republics
to be on the alert lest they be
swallowed up.
