The sale will last ten days loncrer. Those ,

? Mr. R. C. Wilson will go to the warehouse v
on the first of December. After a month's c
training he is expected to succeed Mr. W.
T. Magill who, we learn, will resign on the ?
first of January. 1
The Abbeville banks have about half million
dollars of deposits, being the largest tl
ever. tl
Cotton still stands above the 14 cents
' notch. The only trouble with us is, the Ci
crop is so short. w
Mr. R. E. Cox has ordered a barrel of n
paint from the Southern Cotton Oil Com- h
pany, the paint being made of cotton seed _
oil. ?
Rev. Mr. Telford, pastor of the Upper ^
Long Cane church, will conduct service in c'
his church next Sunday. li
The ginneries in Abbeville are running ci
very short in their work, as compared witu a

week at the Margaret Wright Hospital in a
Augnsta. Mr Paschal had been at the

He nad been in failing health for more

much benefited by his trip. He failed to H
improve however, and went to Augusta
for treatment where he died. c
His body was brought to Mt. Carmel

Why Obstruct (ho Road f
This paper does not pretend to understand
the purpose of the Attorney General
n lnterooBfnc lecal obstruction to the
completion of the Carolina Clinohfleld and
Dhio rail road in this state, or to enter into
the merits of the case from a legal standpoint.
He may have all the law and the
prophets, too, for that matter, on his
?ide. None of that is denied.
On the general principle that a railroad
ievolopes and builds up the country
;hrough which it passes, we cannot understand
why objection should bo made to
)uilding any road, anywhere, at any time,
md especially if its promoters are willing
;hemselvcs to pay for its construction.
We have always looked on railroads as of
iufficient importance to warrant a tax for
heir construction on the communities
hrough which they pass. The Press and
banner's doctrine is to get the rail road
Irst, and session it afterwards; but in all
rour getting, get railroads.

Death of W. P. Wideman,
Hon. W. P. Wideman died at his home
near Lower Long Cane, on last Thursday
Nov. 25, aged 58 years.
Mr. Wideman had entertained a number
of guests at a Thanksgiving dinner, ainong
whom were his brother, Mr. J. F. Wideman,
and bride, of Greenwood.
He had not complained of feeling ill
until a very short time before his death.
Only a few minutes before he died he said
to some one near him that he was feeling
strangely, and with the utterance his
breath left him.
Mr. Wideman was well known in the
County, which ho had the honor of representing
in the State Legislature at one
time. Jtie was once a candidate ror (jongress
but was defeated and did not offer
to run a second time.
He was a successful lecturer and as a
singer bad no equal In the county. Had
he had the opportunity of training his
voice early In life he would have been a
star.
He was jovial and kind hearted, and
while he knew much from experience concerning
the bitter things of life he did not
allow those things to influence, him but
was always the same genial, jovial spirit.
He was a pillar in the Lower Long 'Cane
A. R. P. Church and no where, outside
his immediate family, will he be missed
more than he will bfc missed there. His
remains were laid to rest in that churchyard.
Rev. H. B Blakely preached the
funeral sermon In the absence of Mr.
Wideraans pastor, Rev. A. F. Bradley, who
was too U1 to attend the last sad rites.
The church was filled with mourning
frlende. Even the ante bellum gallery,
built for the slaves, in the old church
house was filled with negroes who came
to show their respect fir the dead whom
they respected so much In life
Paul Gilmore Coming.
Paul Gilmore will appear at Abbeville, in
"The Call of the North," very soon. Judging
from the comments of papers in places
where he has played, this is an exceptionally
fine play, and Paul Qilmore, supported 1
oy a apienuiu company, eumus in me ironc
rank of theatrical talent. Those who go to
eee this play want to see it again and
again. 1
On account of the reception to be given 1
in the home of Mr. Quarles on the night of
the play, the curtain will rise at 8 o'clock
instead of 8:30 as heretofore. This will
give visitors to opera house ample time,
after the play, to attend the reception.
, a r
Some of Abbeville Counties roads are
"in a scrape" which being interpreted
means that they are "out a scrape" and
should be scraped. Anyone driving over
these roads in a machine or buggy is likely
to "meet with a scrape" on account of
the fact that there is no "scrape" to be
met with. Unless the scrapers scrape
more than they have scraped the entire
county will be in a scrape for the good
reason that they have been out of scrapes.
There is no better man than Supervsor
Stevenson, but he has had a scrape on his
hands and he 1s scraping it off as fast as
he can.
