X wmmmmmmmmmmmmasmmmmmtm Trolley For Abbeville Elsewhere in this issue will be found an article setting forth the probable plans of the owners of the Anderson-Belton Traction Compauy in extending this line. It is stated that the lino will be pushed through i to Greenville and thence to .Spartanburg. I Then it is further stated as a certainty that the line will connect with the Seaboard Air Line, at Greenwood or Abbe* i ville, more probably AbbevilleAbbeville has no desire to disparage in the least, the claims of hor neighbor but she may modestly set forth some of the ' advantages of her position. j A direct line from Belton to Abbeville I would run slightly west of Due West, and would be a shorter line by ^bout five mile8 than a direct line to Greenwood. Due West is a thriving town, with more capital in proportion to the number of its inhabitants, perhaps, than any town in the State. Erskine College and Due West Female College are both located there with , a large attendance, and if they could connect immediately with the Seaboard, the student travel alOne would mean much to the trolley line making the connection. The line from Belton by way of Due West to Abbeville .would pass through territory in Abbeville County that is not accomodated by any steam or electrical line at this time, and it is the most desirable , farming section of Abbeville County. If It is the purpose of the promoters to touch all the towns near its general course, it might parallel the Southern to nonea ?mn ana tnence to i uonnaius anu 1 then parallel the Due West road. From Due West to 'Abbeville Is virgin country in so far as road facilities are concerned. On a line drom Due West to Abbeville there is an;excellent chert bed containing hundreds of thousands of tons. Its' quality has been shown by actual demonstration to be;second to none in the state.Government and railrond experts, after maki ing careful examination of the quality and quantity have pronounced it the very best One city alone has agreed to take a thousand tons of the chert if it can be delivered on the Seaboard. Here would b6 constant and steady work for the freight department of the trolley system, to say nothing of the passenger and freight business, incident to the road going through the most prosperous and thickly settled portion of Abbeville County. Abbeville is ready to do her full share to secure this road, and without any definite information on the subject, it may be safely assumed that Due West will do the same. Even if it should be the policy of the promoters to touch at Honea Path and Donalds, they can ill afford to pass by Due West. Which is not only a splendid town now, with its colleges, its banks and its large commercial Interests but is entering on a new era of growth and prosperity. The Pr#ss and Banner would not presume to shape the policy of the owners of the trolley system further than is indicar ted.in their own statement, but a suggestion may not be amiss. For years there has been agitation looking to some kind of public conveyance from Abbeville to Edgefield, there connecting with the road from Edgefield to Alkep. This would pass through rich and populous sections of Abbeville and Edgefield that are not now served by any road. ""A most desirable route would be through the Bellevue 'section and by way of McCormick, one of the most thriving little towns in the State. Without amplffying on this extension (from Abbeville, at this time, should the matter be seriously consinered it would be worth the time of those interested-io go over the route. There are many great advantages that can be brought to thejr attention, >i< . > t Thanksgiving Day. Tomorrow will be thanksgiving day. On that day we are supposed to offer up our thanks to the Almighty, the Supreme Ruler of the universe, for sparing our lives, for blessing us with so many comforts of life, for our national prosperity? for all those things for which we ought to be thankful. > A good percent of us will show our thanks by shooting birds. Some will show their thanks by hunting rabbits, still others will return thanks by fishing for suckers. Some will be thankful by taking excursions to other cities. A very few will be thankful in the old fashioned way, go to ciiurcn in tne morning, go thence home ana spend the remainder of the day among their household gods. Thanksgiving Day is a day in which it is our duty to shut earklng cares and bubble over with good nature and liberality. j To appreciate Thanksgiving Day one should have passed some Fast days. Fast days are of unusual occurrence now a-days i but we used to have them frequentlyThen it was that the stomachs of the little fellows, especially, were an aching void 1 for the space of twenty four hours. The older heads could fill up on pint stoups of strong hot coffee and thus beguile their appetites. How the old ooffee pot used to . boil when fast day came around! Like ) the Indian with his hashish, or the African J with his Seed of Paradise, the Fast day "Seceder" with his big pot of Java-Mocha was ready for any emergency?but the children, whose little stomachs could not stand gulches of hot coffee, who had to , make out on aqua pura what a day it was ? to them! The long hours trailed through ' an endless space of time. The sun, like I that of the "ancient mariner," was an unwelcome visitor. Gallons of gastric juices went literally to waste, while indescribable , gnawings tempted the youngsters to the ! turnip patch or persimmon trees. The children of today know nothing of ' Fast days. With them it is all thanksi giving. May the necessity for Fast day ' observation not be visited on them, but may their lives be lives of continual | thanksgiving. r < As to the method of observing thanksI giving it Is not for us to dictate. Whiie it is hard to see much connection between f offering thanks and shooting rabbits, we ! must remember that all of us do not see - things in the same light, and if a man can r be happiest spending the day thus and 1 feels at the same time that he is obedient to the spirit of the day, who shall gainsay him? ! ?? Thirty Cases of Smallpox at Ninety-Nine Islands. [ GafTney, Nov. 16.?There have been at the works of the Ninety-Nine Islands in this county about thirty cases of smallpox, but the disease is of a very mild type and has been confined wholly to the negroes on the works. Dr. C. F. Williams, secretary of the State Board of Health, visited the works one day last week and ordered a wholesale vaccination. No new cases have developed within the last few days, and it is probable that the disease has run its course. ? WEST END. Personal Paragraphs and News Items Contributed by Miss Lily Templeton. The council has placed two arc lights on the grounds for the use of the ball players. The lights are required because the players are engaged during the day and, therefore, have only the night time to practice in. While the team has had very little practice there are, nevertheless, some good bunches of muscle in it, and the Carolina scrubs will not find a walk over by any means in tomorrow's game. The game will be (felled tomorrow at 11 o'clock. The Abbeville team will line up as follows: ' L E Wilkerson, J. M. L T Wynne L G Clark C Calvert R G Lomax R T Bowie R E Wilkinson, W. D.
