Postmaster spent the week in the Gate City taking in the great automobile show. On last Sunday morning about one o'clock the alarm of fire was sounded and it was found to be the fine residence ol Miss Maggie Brooks on the west end ol the public square. We have heard several theories as to the origin of the fire. Some say from the stove room, others from the electric light wire, but don't know if either are correct. The building was completely destroyed with all furniture. The flames had made such great headway that they could only be eontrolled after a hard fight by the fire company. The dwelling ol Hon. W. N. Graydon caught several times hut. t.hA fin m as WArA lrAnf. rfnwn hv n. Ann tinuoii8 stream of water, nevertheless it was damaged more or less. Many friends of Miss Brook regret hei great disaster and hope she is made whole bv insurance and will soon build again All escaped with their lives, and on this account are to be congratulated. The beautiful city of Abbeville is truly a "city of roses" In the fall, as well as in the spring. This season they are in greal abundance and in endless variety ana the air is filled with 6weet perfume. Flowers sp*?ak refinement and culture, and it goes without saying that the refinement and culture of this people are marked with lovely flowers. Autumn leaves are falling and the foresl will soon be shorn of its beauty. It is a sad thought, and brings to our mind the words of the poet, ''Man's life like the autumn leaf, is fast passing away. It it indeed sad, but as surely true." We have lived to see one store sell out without reducing its stock to cost price, The dispensary of Abbeville is now a thing of the past and everything is perfectly "dry" notwithstanding the express office issued money orders for liquor one day last week to the amount or one hundred and eighty dollars (180). Thus it will be seen that we are going to have liquoi without license, without the dispensary and without any revenue, and already the 'blind tiger" has been trailed and brought to trial. Don't understand these express money orders were all from Abbeville people, not so, but from "all about/ We understand the present express office will soon be given up and that a large building is to built with a view to handling this gigantic business. How true it le we can't say, but such is talked of at least, a tr t - i? t s uiA? mr. axiu aire, uowrio x>euciium ui aliiuita, are visiting home folks in the city. Mr. Johnny Tolbert spent last Sunday with his home people at his country home. Mr. Sam Turner is visiting his home people in the city. Many patrons and subscribers have noticed the change in the make-up of the Press and Banner from a great big papei that you had to go out doors to turn ovqr into a nice book form you can turn page by page to the end. This is indeed a great big improvement. Dr. P. B. Speed's new dwelling is looming up toward the clouds, and is being built in the latest architectual style of the twentieth century, and when finished will be nmong the finest dwellings in the city Contractors Messrs. Acker <fe Graves art certainly showing their skill in house building. , Dr. Ii. D. Reese is adding several rooms to his dwelling on upper Main street which will make a decided improvement on its former appearance, although pretty in design at first. Mr. and Mrs. Boy Power and the othei up-stairs dwellers in the Brooks' dwelling escaped from the fire as by a miracle The head-board of some were on fire as they left their rooms. A close call indeed. Don't wony about the "drop" in the price of cotton, Just hold tight, and it if just as sure to right itself to the situation as night follows day, or that the demand is far in excess of the supply. Kev. S. A. Nettles, editor of the Southern Christian Advocate, preached two earnest and forceful sermons in the Methodist church last Sunday morning and evening to a large and attentive congregation.
