The good people of Columbia are preparing to put the big pot In the little one, lill a chicken and churn, for the entertain- I nent of President Taft on the occasion of | lis coming visit to Columbia. \ For this purpose the city of Columbia lad already raised two hundred dollars, nore than a week ago. The committee laving the matter of entertanement in 'harge conceived the plan of sending out nvitations to numbers of prominent men ;hroughout the state inviting them to come . lown and dine with Mr. Taft and at the j lame time requesting a check for $10. The following is a copy of the invitation sent to Senator Tillman and others, asked x> participate in the luncheon: Columbia, S. C., Oct. 9,1909. "Dear Sir: It gives us much pleasure o extend to you an invitation to the lunch- * ion given in the honor of the president of I Jnited States on his visit to Columbia, I Saturday, November 6. The number of I ilates is limited to 300 and we are compelled " o ask that if you find it possible to attend rou will let us know by October 22, or earier. No tickets will be issued after that lay, and tickets will be issued in order of esponses received, up to 800. If you will eturn this letter, together with your check or $10, by that date, October 22, a card of .dmission will be at once sent you. There ire no complimentary tickets and no tickts will be reserved. "Very cordially, Q "Jas. A. Hoyt. "Chairman Invitation Committee. Columbia is to have a big "break down" mt every fellow who cuts the "pigeon ring" at the frolic must help to pay the iddler. That is about the situation in a iut shell. <j) Once upon a time not many miles from ibbeville there was held what is known In ommon parlance as a "frolic." This paricular "frolic" was given in honor of a isltor from a neighboring county, and initions were issued in profusion of which re received one, with the assurance that asides the frolic there would be lemonade ,nd cake. " Not suspecting that any untoward cirumstance would arise, we went, we enjoyd the frolic, ate the cake and drank the sftionade. We had not been advisd that hat a collection would be taken up to pay ~ or the cake and lemonade and when the at was passed around to that end we felt ike a broke bargain hunter at a sheriff's .uction. We did not have a nickle, and so iad to pay for our lemonade and cake with i promise. Now Columbia has said to a half column's ength of prominent men throughout the. tate. "Come to the frolic boys" but bring scad" to pay for your lemonade and cake! low much better is this than to be caught Ike this editor was?without the "scad." Senator Tillman takes umbrage at fair lolumbia for inviting him to her party nd putting him on notice that he would <e expected to pay for his lemonade and ake! , | The senior senater is so impetuous and loes so many foolish things. Fair Columia did not urge him to attend, she simply avited him stating the condition of the nvitation?viz, the ck. for the meal ticket, nd the senator talks as if he would not go t all?tut, tut, tut! Why suppose the senator had been caught s we were?at the frolic and not a nickle S i our pockets and the hat being passed ? round! Then he would have had room to ? uarrel but now?why he knows what he i up against. He should be glad that, he as all the information? We didn't. Ethics of the old time "Break down," as enator Tillman well knows admitted of a | ollection being taken up to pay the fiddler nd straw beater, but there is no written r unwritten regulation, precedent, or adice, governing the matter of lemonade nd cake. It seems possible that the senator might lassify his meal ticket under the general ead of' 'Fiddler," and see the event througe Ithout side tracking from what he preimns to ho t.hft nrnner course to Dursue nder the circumstances. 1 Senator Tillman ought to be glad of the pportunity of breaking bread beside Wil- <3 am Howard, and what is a little $10 check ) be making such a row over it? Why iere are thirty or forty others invited and C ot^one of them has kicked on the meal cket. ' Any how, somebody must pay the Fid- f ler.
