j which we have to solve is the remodei- i
ing of our primary schools system of
education. i
This system should be so arranged i
as to answer the exigencies of the 1
, present conditions of our existence. ]
Man is a composite of what I will j
call, for the present purpose, a direct- t
ive personality, a bodily matter and ?
an intellect. 2
The primary object of the education I
I of our children should be to fit these s
three components of their being for
the parts they will have to play in
their future life.
First : The directive personality
should be taught the general principles
of morals and the principal laws of the
land.
It is obvious that this part of the
educatiou should be made the main
feature of the system, its aim beiug
the moulding of the men and of the
citizens of the future.
Second: The human body should
be made the subject of the study in the
primary schools.
To be competent, an engineer must
have the knowledge of his engine, of
its piirts, their arrangement and function
; he musit know how to keep it
clean, in neat appearance and in working
order; be must know how to use
" it and keep it in repair.
Same knowledge should be possessed
by man in regard to his body, which is j
the moat perfect engine in the world, t
being the work of the Creator Himself.
Third : The education of the children's
intellect should have for object
the training of their intellectjal faculties,
such as their imagination, their
judgment, their reason, their memory
and their ability for speaking.These
three features should be present
inseparably in the primary school
system of education.
The majority of our children do not
, go beyond the primary schools; yet,
they are to form the largest part of our
nation and to have their in handH th?shaping
of its destinies; it i?, therefore
of the utmost importance that
they should receive a training adequate
with their future duties and responsibilities.
Through instructions and books presented
in attractive and interesting
I manner and forms, it would be as
easy to teach our children tbeelements
of morals, of laws, of human anatomy.

Last Friday night I went over from
Willington to tbe Lethe Home and
spent a very pleasant night with Mr.
*nd Mrs. W. E. Hagan.
Mrs. Hagan is a refined as well as an
ndustrious lady. She keeps tbe Home
,u fine condition, and with her own
bauds she has made a great mauy improvements
that are ornamental to the
place. When I made my first visit
;here two yearB ago she had just startjd
a liower-yard and had plauted vines
it each corner of the piazza, and her
lowers had just begun to grow. Now
ihe has a most beautiful fiower-yard in
'rout of the Home and her vines have
uu from one corner of the piazza to
he other and make a beautiful shade
hat keeps out all the morning eun.
There were about twenty-four chiliren
taken care of this year at the
Home. Mrs. Hagan sews aud makes
ill the clothes for tbe children, aud
Mr. Ha^an keeps them plenty of good
ind sufficient rations. There are ten
children at the Home at present and
bey are cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Ha
jan just as tbey care for their own
jhihtren, and, really, if a stranger vists
the Home, unless by favor, he

Elagan's children. An old friend of
nine came in while I was there and
isked me which were Mr. Hagan's
laughters. The same kind feeling aDd
eepect seems to prevail with the chilIren
towards Mr. and Mrs. Hagau. I
noticed while there that they all, big
md little, old and young, in speaking
o Mr. and Mrs. Hagan, said "Papa"
ind "Mama." It is really interesting
o -visit the Home and see the close ties
hat bind tbe children to the manager
ind his good wife.
The trustees have made many improvements
in the last two years. They
lave had waterworks put iu for tbe
)enefit of the institution; tbe church
las been repaired and madea very good
)uilding; they have had all of the
juildings painted. Part of the paiulng
was done by the mauager. Afler

itairs in beautiful letters : "Tbe Lethe

He has built a splendid garden at home

Mr. Hagan is also a tip-top
'ftrmer; he has the best crop of corn,
jotton, peaviue and augar-cane forage
hat I have seen this year.
The trustees employed Prof. J. A.
ralbert to teach the school at Lethe
ast year and this year, and it seems
hat be taught the school with much
success, from the way I heard it spoken
of by some ladies on the train. I
aeard a lady say that she attended the
ixhibition that they held, and Mr.
ralbert and Mr. and Mrs. Hfegan made
t a graod success.
