A big shipment of Sterlii Silver on display at The R. Dargan Co. LETTER FROM MR. A. H. BEST. 5fes; there was a meeting of the ^ temperance people in McCormick a ^ few weeks ago. You. Mr. Editor, say this was an V anti-Abbeville meeting. J suppose this J statement is due to the fact that you have tried to defend the dispensary so long that to you dispensary and Abbeville are synonmous terms, standing for one and the same thing in your mind. I am glad 10 think that this is not true with regard to many of the good people of the town of Abbeville. a Your reporter says, "The speaker had ' & more to say against Abbeville and the dispensary than against the drunkenness and lipling habit." The truth is, there was read one excellent article on prohibition In Georgia, from Judge Emory Bpeer of the Georgia Southern District Court, and three speeches were made. According to my recollection, 1 only one speaker referred to Abbeville and Abbeviile's new court bouse building in connection with the dispensary. 1 1 Tbe longest and best prepared speech was devoted to the use and abuse of. strong drink, emphasizing the duty of the church in such matters and warn1 ing church members against the abuse of their liberty. f-q The connection between the advo^ cacy of the legalized sale of whiskey, rN-f and the effort to discourage the people J1 trying to send the gospel to the heathen i-n is, the one endorses a traffic that means 111 the enslaving of the youth and manhood of our own land, underminding the peace and happiness of many homes; and the other withholding from a people in darkness and suflerDr ing the light and joy that Jesus Christ came to bring to all people. We know 3b the devil is opposed to prohibition and missions. Tbe writings of the editor ie of the Press and Banner on these line* are not misunderstood by thoughtful ? people. Talk of crushing struggling churches in the home laud in order to t- send tbe Gospel to the heathen, reminds me that a few years ago the )T tfaptiBt or tms country spin on tne question of foreign missions. Those Q.- believing in foreign missions have multiplied in numbers aDd increased in ts wealth until they are oue of the strong factors in tbe world's uplift today. ) J Those opposing foreign missions have shrunken and shriveled until they )0 count for but very little in anything tbat Christianity stands for. They IT have been busy trying to take care of tbomselves. Talk of the preachers y, putting burdens upon tbe laymen of J the church. Is it not the thoughtful business laymen who are pushing the FA crreat lavmen's missionary movement tbat is agitatiDg this country now ? As to the new court bouse at Abbeville being built with dispensary mooey: I will say when I was in Abbeville about two years ago, I was reliably informed tbat those in authority said if the people would let the dispensary stand, tbat in five years they ^ would build the new court house and M city hall without a dollar from the peo? pie. When a petition was being cir) culated to get the^eople's signature for / permission to build the new court house, the promise was made that the people would not be taxed for this purpose. Now the people are being taxed to pay for tbia new court house. I am beginning to learn that it is not safe to venture an assertion as to where dis,D pensary profits has been or may be ap iao- pucu. noe No one said at this meeting "If they gp'; lived at Abbeville they would faVor Mr* the dispensary." Nor have I beard of ere any one in or around McCormick inti,^ee mating ftiat the dispensary profits might be refused by the McCormick r ?t school. My, how some people can manufacture news. As to prohibition in Georgia: I will set gay that Bishop Candler is reported, to ge have said, "There are more blind talkLhiB ers than there are blind tigers." ExGovernor Terrell of Georgia was interim viewed in Columbia the other day, and t. is reported in the State as saying, that ln*- Georgia is all right and with tne ex' J ception of two or three places, prohibithe tion was being successfully euforced. Judge Emory Speer of the Federal j|ty bench of the Georgia Southern district court is on record, as rendering a juber dicial opioion as to the far-reaohing ver benefits of State prohibition in Georgia. The police court records show >*Jr that the arrests for drunkenness has decreased. These are some of our cerwai? tificates as to the success of prohibition in Georgia. What are yours ?' [fer I was in Union . County when the Hiononaarv a'ao vntoH mil* onH a 1. ln though the enforcement of prohibition in that county was made difficult by the unscrupulous methods of the advocates of the legalized sale of whiskey, yet I can bear testimony as to the, improved conditions under prohibition. I spent three years in Newberry oet County where the dispensary had beeh voted out, and I believe nine out every ten good, honest, thoughtful, and soihu ber men would sign a statement testiira fying to the improved conditions lin"jjjj der prohibition. Men who had been 1Dd strong supporters of the dispensary Dd. system, tola :me that the conditions under prohibition were far better than r us with the dispensary in Newberry. ' etb A final tboueht for the DeoDle of Ab ?|?' ville County, to consider. I saw the' statement a few days ago, that anyone the boarding the Seaboard train at New !art Orleans going to Richmond, would irp. find but one place on the whole run era. that they could legally buy a bottle of lhe whiskey, and that place was the town Id of Abbeville. It used to be tauntingly of said, that the advocates for the prohibition of the sale of whiskey were gtor composed of long-haired men and fana. atical women. Is it possible that these long-haired men and fanatical women have succeeded in duping all of the people from New Orleans to Richmond, fre except the people of Abbeville Counhnt ty ^ P089lble that all along no tne line irom iNew Orleans to Kicbine mond the only sane, prudent people r ' are to be found in Abbeville County ? A' A. H. Best, P. C., McCormick Ct. Mar. 27,1909. riih py It Saved Ills Leg. "All thought I'd lose my leg," writes 110 J. A.
