Grover Cleveland on "How it Feels
to be President."
In the September American Magazine
"The Interpreter" presents his
own reminiscences of Grant, Sherman.
Sheridan and other great men. Following
is an interesting statement that
Mr Cleveland once made to "The
Interpreter:"
ilA sensitive man is not happy as
President," said he. "It is tight, fight,

His enemies are incessant. It is impossible
for bim, if he is conscientious,
to keep the affection of his friends. I
looked forward to the^lose of my term
as a happy release from care. But I
am not sure that I wasn't more unhappy
out of office than in. A term in
the Presidency accustoms a man to
great duties. He gets used to haudling
tremendous enterprises, to organising
forces that may affect at once and directly
the welfare of the world. After
the long exercise of power the ordinary
affais of life seem petty and common f
place. An Ex-President practicing
law or going into business is like a
locomotive hauling a delivery wagon.
He has lost his sense of proportion.
The concerns of other people and even
his own affairs seem too small to be
worth bothering about. I thought I
was glad when Mr McKinley came to
Washington to be inaugurated, and I
took a drink of rye whiskey with him
in the White Houee and shook humta
with him aDd pnt ray bat on my head
and walked out a private citizen. But
I mips the strain, the epur of constant
thinking, the consciousnes of power,
the knowledge that I was acting for
seventy million people dally,"

years ago the first symptoms of
kidney trouble made their appearance
in my case. I began to have
pains in the small of my back
which gradually grew worse as
time passed. I became so sore and
lame that at times I could hardly
stoop and if I did manage to do so,
to straighten again caused me just
as much misery. At times the
kidneys were quite frequent in action
and then again J could scarcely
void them. Doau's Kidney Pills
were finally brought to my attention
and I procured a box. I used
