The Girl With The Hoe.
' The papers are singing tbe praises
of tbe sweet girl graduate, rhetoric*?
boquets are flung at her feet and all
the world goes wild over her at thi?
season every year, and It should.
For while God perhaps might have
made a sweeter, more lovable specimen
of femininity, he never did.
But she has a sister.
Back home on the farm she stays.
For four or five months during the
winter season she goes to the rural
school and there with forty to sixty
others she takes ber tnrn at trying to
learn from the teacher, who too often
is a youne inexperienced girl, but
slightly older than she. All the term
she studies bard in school, at home
nhn hnn the cookinc. mornim? and
night to do. Sbe milks, cleans up the
house. and every Friday she has to
stay at home to do the washing, so
the clothes will be ready for ironiog
Saturday. Sbe does the ironing herself,
aDd bakes the cakes for Sunday.
On Sunday morning sbe is out at
the country eburch to Sunday Bchool,
clean, sweet, pure, and happy. Her
voice leads all the singing in its sweet
abandon. Sunday night when the
supper things are washed up, she
makes the old organ in the parlor
give out such strains that the very
swallows stop in their evening cyclings
to listen. The day is over, and
the weekly routine begins anew.
When the sweet girl graduate is
reading ber learned essays to spellbound
audiences, our 'little maid is in
the field. With hoe in band, from
