The News and Courier.
MaJ. J. C. Hemphill, editor of the News
and Courier, dropped In on us last Monday
j mornlug. and we were real glad to si e him.
His good health and bis good looks are on a
I par with his ability as an editor and as an
I Interesting talker. He lavors tbe nomination
of Governor Jobuson as a Democratic
[candidate for President. He thinks good
I things oi Governor Johnson persouany, #uu
he believes, with blm Id tbe lead, that tbe
Democrats have a lighting chance to win.
He thinks very well ol Mr. Bryan as a gentleman,
but Mr. Hemphill thlnfcs that tbe
Nebraskan's chance of election is not better I
than his own. The fact is, Mr. Hemphill Is
enthusiastic for Johnson.
Mttj. Hemphill was associate editor of the
Abbeville Medium up to ISSO. when Mr.
Dameou, seeing merit in his ability as un
editor, called blm to Charleston to assist id
editing the News and Courier. At Mr. Daw6on's
death Mr. Hemphill succeeded blm as
editor of Cbarlestou's grtat dally, which posltioa
he holds with IncreaslDg honors as tbe
years roil by. Mr. Hemphill thinks an editor
should be an editor without dabbling in
politics. He was asked to be delegato to the
Democratic State Couveutioa, and was asked
to be a candidate for delegate to Deo ver. He
declined In both Instances.
Mr. Hemphill thinks Charleston Is on tlie
eve of a prosperous career. 11 le becoming a
metropolitan city. Twenty-seven feet of
water affords a floating pool for the biggest
of your Uncle Sam's sblps. The money spent
and to be spent on tbe navy yard U a big
thing for Caarleston, Tbe drainage of tbe
swamps around the city and the Improved
health of the country districts will all contribute
to Charleston's growth.
Mr. Hemphill was on bis way to Due West
when we saw him. He goes to deliver |
medals that have been awarded to students
In the Female College, and he will be pleased >
to meet old friends of the years that are *
gone.
A gentleman on the street in speaking of "
Mr. Hempbill, said that be looked like, or ?
favored Governor Johnson In appearauce. j
We didn't learn 11 the personal resemblance
to his favorite candidate was the cause that
drew Mr. Hemphill to Governor Johnson.
Mr. Htiupblll spoke pleasantly of Abbeville,
and noted its growth and prosperity
with pleasure. In twenty-eight years the
town has ereatly changed, and many new
clttzens now fill tbe places that were held by
