Forther Trouble ?t deration.
The following comments on the rcc ut
disturbance at Clemson College are ihe expressions
of tbt editor, without In tbe least
Involving lbs oplnloa of ttie owners of tbe
paper.
If there is any apparent vagueness in tbe
article in placing tbe responsibility for disturbances
between the Board of Trustees and
the Faculty or Discipline Committee, none is
Intended. It is believed tbat tbe Board has
done its duty as It has seen it.and the highest I
regard personally Is entertained for the ability
and Integrity of the men who compose It.
As we understand, the facts are substantially
these. <
The authorities, whoever they may be, |
"warned" the boys against performing any
"April fool" tricks, wltb an implied threat of
punishment for disregard of the "warning." !
The boyB, as might bave been expected under
the circumstances, did not restrain themselves.
They absented themselves from class
on "April Fool" day. For an outing they
spent the day in Pendleton, a short way
off.
Tbe discipline committee, composed of the
President, the Commandant, and the beads
of departments, did not even attempt to apportion
tbe blame In a case where it Is Impossible
that all the blame should be on one
side.
Without taking Into consideration any
of tbe causes that led up to tbe dlsobedlenoe
to college laws, tbe bovs were
dismissed from the college, and that die- 1
missal is presumed to prevent any of tbe
boys so dismissed from entering tbe classes
of any other college. The extreme penalty oi 1
college discipline was administered.
The college laws provide no greater punishment
for kicking the president la the
back, or knocking him In tbe bead with an J
axe, than was inflicted because of the boys
absence from college one day. If tbe boys 1
had kicked the trustees over the l<-nc? and 1
out Into the public road, ihe college couid uot 1
hive Inflicted greater punlsbm"at. Ofct urse '
the boys in this latter Instance would have 1
been accountable to the State laws, but tbe
college laws neglected to mufee provision 1
atcalnst boys kicking the profess'ors and trus- I
tees out Into the roa J.
That there Is to our mind incompetency or
Inefficiency among the authorities at CI Vinson,
tbe disturbance clearly proves.
The proof was furuis'aed a ye.ir ago, but the
trustees took no note of I'., and dismissed
neither tbe president nor any professor.
The fact that the Faculty "warned" the
boys Is proof conclusive to our mind, that the
person or persons responsible for the "warning"
should resign, or If he or they do not
resign, the duty of tbe trustees Is plain. ?
It may be said to be a slander on the young
men of the State to charge that the boys of
Clemson are unruly. They are as good young
men as any In the State; and with the proper
men In charge of them and the Institution,
they will be as orderly and as circumspect as t
are the boys In other colleges where tbe ?
numbers far exceed the numbers In Clem> *
