co
The Legislature In joint assembly, elected ^
Hon. Frank B. Gary, United States Senator,
to succeed the Hon. A.. C. Latimer, deceased. ,
There has perhaps never been just such a
political contest in the State legislature; and T{
Mr. Gary's election is the highest possible [Q
tribute to him as a man. Unquestionably,
be wa8 handicapped in the race. The feeling
r>r onmrmiPshiD for him on the part of the
members, linked with tbat respect and con- **
fldence that be has Inspired by long years of '
faithful service, made bis election possible In ^
tbe face of tbe strongest opposition. His was w|
a personal vote tbat could not be broken by ^
flattery or dissipated by tbe shrewdest polltlcal
tactics.
That Mr. Gary was tbe evident cbolce of T'
the Joint assembly was apparent early In tbe '
balloting. At onetime or another, long be- be
fore tbe ballot which elected him, eighty fle
nine members t^ad voted for him, showing
conclusively tbat be was tbe cbolce of tbe Jn"
body. Tbe ballotlDg was prolonged by the ec
nomination of men from different sections of ac
tbe State who by reason of locality or assocl- th
atlon felt constrained for tbe time being to
quit tbe leading candidate to pay a compllmentary
vote to tbe new nominee.
Representative citizens of tbe town called p{
at Mr. Gary's home last Saturday night to |Q
express their pleasure and satisfaction at bis
election. Tbe occasion was turned Into a Q(
social gathering In which all parties enjoyed W|
. themselves very much. (

Ladies Civic League. le,
Something like a year ago tbe Press and w<
Banner suggested tbat the ladles of Abbeville
organize a Civic League, wblcb organlz tlon
should take In tbe matter of beautifying tbe
town, adding to Its public pleasures, and contributing
by cooperation to tbe growth of tbe
city.
Similar associations exist In many other
towns of tbe State, and It is said tbat great
good baa resulted therefrom. Just as tbe
Men's Commercial Club, an organized body
can In this organized capacity handle a proposition
tbat the town Is Interested In, to
advantage, so the Ladles' Civic League wfll
be In position to handle Buch matters of a
public nature as come awkwardly to the
sterner Bex.
A call requested by &11sb Mamie Lou
Smith, Mra. M. T. Coleman, Mrs. J. C. Ellis,
Mrs. F. E. Harrison, Mrs. W. D. Wilson and
Mayor McMillan, 1b hereby Issued, requesting
all the ladles'of the city to meet In the
Court room, near tbe hotel, Thursday, March
i2th at 11 o'clock, for tbe purpose of organization.
Come one. Come all.
Rural Free Delivery.
Tbe following letter shows tbat tbrougb
tbe efforts or Congressman Aiken, all tbe
available territory In Abbeville County Is
now being covered by rural delivery service.
When the population becomes denser new
routes will be put In. Little more can be
done now than Improving existing routes by
making such changes to better serve the majority
of tbe people.
March 4, 1908.
Bonoiable Wyatt Aiken,
Houte of Representatives.
Sir:
Yon 8re advised tbat complete county serrice
