CLIPPINGS OF INTEREST.
How many farmers fenow the true history
of the cotton plant, or where discovered, or
how long It has been lu use. The Hindoos
knew bow to make a thread from cotton 500
years before the birth of Christ; tbe Eeyp
tlaos used It over 2000 years; the Moors
brought It lnte Europe over 1000 years ago.
When Cortez came to America he found In
Mexico "exquisite cotton fabricdyed In va
rlous colors." So cotton Is a valuable pro
duct of both hemispheres, and Is so ancient
that no history can tell its first discovery or
use. It will grow anywhere between 40 de
grees north and 10 degrees south latitude.
Tls said you can get rid of Jobtmon grass by

Man does not live by bread alone.
Usually thi9 text is used fcy preachers
to point to man's spiritual needs. It
is, boweveft, equally applicable to
man's intellectual needs.
By bread alone, that is by phisical
health may be maintained in perfeci
condition. An animal, given proper
food in sufficient quantities, will grow
into a perfect specimen of its kind.
This also fully applies to the animal
or physical nature of man. Well fed,
he may become a giant in strength,
capable of doing the greatest amount
of phisical labor. But that is all. To
develop the intellectual part of mau
this must be fed with interlectual food.
And properly fed with such food, he
will develop iutellectually as be will
develop physically by being properly
fed on physical food.
In intelluctual as well as in physical
growth and development the feeding
f>rocess must be contiuuous. As read
ng more than anything else tends to
intellectual development, all should
read as regularly each day as they
take their daily meals. Fortunately
this is within the reach of everybody,
in our country at least, and at the
present time. Reading matter is so
cheap that it is within the reach of all,
and there is no person so busy as to be
by stress of work denied all opportuni
ty to take intellectual food. The per
son in this day and time who does not
read simply doesn't want to read. He
or she is contest with an existence
which is not above the level of the
animal.
But the opportunities of all for read
ing-are not equal. There are many,
probably a majority who, for lack of
means to procure it or for lack of time
Hnunte to if rrmv nnf. hp Rblft to read
aa much as Ibey would like, People
so situated should carefully consider
how with the time aud means at their
disposal for reading they may so apply
it so as to obtain the most possible
good from it.
Such people, first of all, should read
a paper regularly. The cost is insig
nificant, and the modern paper is an
encyclopedia in itself. It gives all the
newB, and the regular reader is kept
fully informed as to passing events at
home and abroad. It contains articles
on every subject of human interest,
and the contributions of hundreds of
minds, in a form to be readiest under
stood and most quickly taken in, are
presented in every good paper that is
printed If a person be unable to read
anything except a newspaper, provid
ing this be a first-class one aud read
regularly, he would be well informed.
To regularly read such a newspaper
is the best reading. More should be
read, a certain portion of time given
to the reading of some good literature
