Tbe Va'entiue party given last Friday eve
ning by Misses Nelle and Helen EJwards at
their pretty home on Main street was the
happy bit of this New Year a most cbarming
and delightful affair at which a large number
of guests were most pleasantly and hospitably
entertained. A pretty fi9hlng pond was
most aitistically arranged from which the
happy guests drew their fortunes. Another
ieatuie of tbe evening that created much fun
was a larga red heart suspended on white be
tween the folding doors of parlor and dining
room and upon this each guest being presented
wltb an arrow and pin attached, was
blindfolded aod tried tbeli lack at pinning
tbelr arror acroBsand in tbe center of tbe
hpnrt: the lucky one was said to be "In love"
Upon a large table was placed a beantifu!
centerpiece jupon which sat a large vaee filled
with red chrysanthemums, and from eacb
earner of the centerpiece were prettily arranged
small red hearts running to the center?
from each corner of the table festoons of red
ribbon extended to the celling, being caught
up in tbe center by large bows.
At 11 oclock a most delightful salad course
was served. The evening was one of extreme
pleasure and will long linger in the memory
of those present.
Dr. G. A. Neuffer left last Sunday for Tampa,
Florida where be goes to attend the
slates meeting of the Railroad Surgeons, ana
from there tbe doctor will visit Cuba.
We wish him a pleasant trip, and , safe return
home.
Doctors James Hill, Gambrell aod Simpson
were on route 3 this week on professional
business. The doctors are kept busy and all
the sick on route 3 are Improving,
Mrs. J. H. Penney of Sbaron has been
quite 111 tbe past week, but at this writing itsome
better.
Mr. David Gilliam who has been quite sick
for the past two weeks is now a llttie better,
and tis hoped tbe worst is over aud be will
soon be well strain.
Mrs Janle Richie js sick, but^ under tbe
careful attention or JDr. James .Hill is now
Improving.
Mrs. D. Man-hall haB been quite sick the
past week or eo but is now getting on nicely
much better.
Tne mauy friends of Dr. W. T. Penney regret
tolearn ofbis extreme Illness and hope
he will *oon be belter.
Mrs. J. W. Sign has been very ill for some
weeks but Is now thought to be a little
better?we hope she will soon be fuUy restored
to health.
FATAL ACCIDENT.

Hammond formerly of this oity, but now of
Spartanburg, learn with sorrow of the death
i of their eldest son Cbarlle which occurred at
their home about 4 ociock last Saturday f
morning Feb'y 15,1903. ?
The circumstances leading to his untimely I
death are very sad, be having been acclden- I
tally shot about a week ago by one oi his
little play mates, at first It seemed but slight
but upon probing the ball could not be found,
and in a lew days it was found necessary to
perlorm an operation which was done on
Friday with the above sad result.
Cbarlle was a bright and noble lad of 16
years and was well known and beloved by "
many friends here whose hearts were made
sad over bis death.
