Let Us Take a Step Forward.
Just now Abbeville bo ldlog a new city
bail.
Tbe oouoty U building a new court bouse,
Tbe loe plant and iauDdry Is In oourse of
construction.
Private Individuals are spending thousands
of dollars iu tbe erection ot sp endld homos
of all kinds.
Tbe Farmers Bank Is patting up a flue
structure for Its own use, and for a post office,
wltb apartments up stairs for tbe Masons.
Dr. Simpson Is building obe or tbe finest
dwelling bouses to be found In tbe up-country.
Mr. Ellis bas Just finished three handsome
dwellings.:
Mr. Wilkinson has Just put tbe roof on a
new dwelling boose.
Mr. 8yfan has finished a large and handsome
dwelling in Fort Pickens.
Mr. W.Joel Smith has finished a commodious
addition to his elegant home.
Hon. John R. Blake contemplates big improvements
on his bonseand lot.
u" ' lTnataf Ripnoall la hnltrltn* a dwell
log which will be one of the most desirable
homes Id tbe city.
Mrs. Harris Is building a nloe cottage on
tbe street next door to Mrs. Love's borne.
Besides tbe Improvements mentioned,
there are no doabt many others wblcb we
have overlooked.
But except tbe Ice plant and tbe lanndry,
no Industrial enterprise Is on foot.
Abbeville needs another cotton mill, wblcb
will give employment to tbe laboring man,
and wbloh will add to tbe good cotton market
for wblcb Abbeville Is noted. Tbe permanent
growtb of a city Is largely due to Its
Industrial enterprises.
A community can do almost anything. Not
so long ago tbe farmers built a large cotton
warehouse, and they, with the help of tbe
town of Abbeville could build another cotton
mill.
If we bad two cotton mills a good market
would be assured lor all time to oomp, Two
large cotton mllla would me all tbe cotton
that comes to this market, and the competition
would enure to the benefit of tbe cotton
seller.
And tbe Drenenceof the cotton mill would
benefltalltbe town by putting tbe amount ol
tbe pay roll into tbe bandsof tbe nilll operatives,
and they In turn would pot a large per
oent. of It In olredlatlon.
If tbe people or me county woaia oeoame
Interested, another cotton mill would be assured.
Report Corrected.
Mr. WadeOtttbran, of McCormlck, was Id
town last week, and be gave Intereatlng talks
of good people in bis town. He gave a eood
picture of men and tbings about tbe borne
city of tb% treat prohibition leader of tbU
county. From Mr. Cotbran we learn tbat the
needed whiskey Is sometimes ordered from
Augusta. He corrected a report tbat bad
gona abroad to tbe effect tbat somebody bad
smuggled In a big Jug, ao tbat nobody would
koowltbat be bad It. As we understood, the
ground for tbe false report waa baaed on tbe
fact tfiat tbe buyer, Instead of having bis Ju(
packed In excelsior, ordered tbe shipper tc
;us0 rice, And because of tBIs faot tbe newi
went abroad tbat the buyer of tbe liquor bad
attempted conceal bla purchase. It Is Jusl
outrageous tbat a man can't buy a little
liquor in Augusta and bave bis Jug secojrelj

, talking about It. If yon were going tc
ship * Jug Id a barrel, can you think of a
more suitable substitute for ezoelslor than
rice?- Because a man uies tbe beat packing
'It do reaaoa why be abould be talked
' about. He that boys land, buys stones ; be
tbat buys fish, buys bones; but be tbat buys
good liquor buys nolblng else, If be doeso'l
pack It Id a barrel of rloe.
Coming to Town.
Tbere seems to be Borne disposition on tbe
part of many Industrious and worthy working
people to oome to town.
Mr. Hugb Monday bas bought a home, and
will be one of us In a little time.
Mr. Robert Bowie has bought a home, and
Is employed at tbe power bouse, wbera the
escaping home-made lightning 8trnok|hlm all
In a beap last Monday. He doesn't "fool"
with tbe switch board any more.
Mr. John Bowie la negotiating for a borne.
And various others are Bald to be oomlng.
Thirty Cents Apiece.
When a ship comes In with thirty million
dollars in gold, the announcement follows
tbat tbe panlo Is over. Tbirty million dollars
1b abont tbirty cents apiece for ns. Bnt,
as another has said, It is not tbe laok of money
that is earning tbe trouble now. It 1b lack
of confidence tbat disturbs tbe money markets.
Astonishing.
Tbe Anderson Mall says the people of tbat
town boy eggs In Atlanta.
And tbe Spartanburg Herald iDtlmates tbat
some of tbe farmers of tbat oounty buy Wealnrn
oorn and bay wltb which to feed their
horses.
