Wednesday, March 13, 1907. Electric Railroad. Does that proposition jar you? lu order that our people may know something of ?the proposed electric railway, tbey are invited to assemble at tbe Commeiclal Club rooms al 1 o'clock p. m., today Wednesday. Tbe advuntagee and tbe needs for this great road are so well presented that tbere remains nothing for us to say. Id no public enterprise bave we ever been offered such open ana iramt oemiuK. nothing was ever presented to tbiB people that wub of greater importance. Aud yeu will notice that nothing Is expected ol Spartanburg until the road comes to tbat town. Assuming tbat the same generous proposisltlon will be made to Abbeville, we see no reason to urge our people to act in this matter. Abbeville can't afford to let this opportunity pass. The Idea of a great corporation proposing to build a railroad for us before asking money of us, nearly lukea onr breath. Abbeville has had railroad propositions before, but none so sood as this. We can well afford to promise all tbat may be asked of ub. Abbeville county lis* more productive table lands, more rolling hills, find more ricn vaj leys than any other part of tbe world. Abbeville county Is toe borne of cotton? tbe best money crop In tbe world. Abbeville county's fields ol golden grain, 01 ripening corn, and of growing cotton greet the eye aDd please the vision at every turn. Abbeville county has tbe purest, tbe coolest and tbe most invigorating drinking water tbat ever run ont of tbe ground. Abbeville county bss more splendid water powers 'hfin any county In tbe United States Abbeville county bss thousands of acres that are worth 8100 to $150 an acre, but wblcb from lack of people and tbe scarcity trans portallon being in tbe market only S3 to 815 Abbeville county has more aDd better schools and collegisthan can be found anywhere else. Abbeville county has unlimited banking * and war* house facilities. Abbeville county has more bubbling springs, more purling rills, more babbling brooks, more meandering creeks, more folia and mlgnty rivers, oiure uigu noiv> ..... - V more good roads than can be found in anj ooucty In the world. Drawing a circle of fifty miles around tb* city, Abbeville has more good suburbaD towns than any city Id tbe United States I What other city can boast of sucb suburbs a> I Calboun Falls, Elberton, Anderson, Lowndes I vllle, Belton, Honea Path, Donalds, Due , West, Greenwood, Ninety Six, Ware's Shoals, Hodges,Troy, Bradiey, Phoenix, McCormlckand a ccore of Other live and pro, grecslve towns and cltlet? Abbeville county helped to build tbe first railroad that ever came from tbe coast to tbe mountains, and this county will be ready to help with the last and the best railroad preposition that we ever bad. Abbeville Is a proud county. Notwithstanding the fact that she holds her courts In a barn, of which she Is ashamed, yet It It true that Abbeville county Is tbe home ol giants. Whether In Congress, in Leglsla w Kur In th? tlve DaiJB oq me oeucu, m iuo ??, ? ? pulpit. In tbe school, In science. In art, In oratory, or In fields of valor, her sons hav* stood at the front. Abbeville 1b traly the home of giants. If our grandparents bad known of our golden grain, our rlpenlDg corn, our growing cotton, Adam and Eve would never bavt fooled wltb apple orchards where the frait was faulty and sour. Abbeville county was tbe first to enter tbe truggle for Southern Eights; and it was tbe last to cease tbe figbt for Dixie. But tbe war of destruction li over. Our people have enlisted lu the army of construction. We are building now with tbe same ardor that characterized our valor in war. We are seekicg the victories of peace whicb are not less renowned than tbe victories ol war. But wltb all our glorious recorns In a proud past we Btill need just one thing. And that one thing Is an electric railroad. We need more and better facilities for freight ond travel. We are sbort on railroads. Bat when we get our electric railroad we will be so well satisfied that we would not leave our dear old mother county to live in tbe Garden of Eden wltb all her great orchards and her great crops of sour apples wltb specks In mem. ft. I'nueteiiury and Unprofitable. It may be that our recent playful reference to Anderson, which we thought would bp regarded as It was intended, Id good humor, was not so received. And it may be, that oar reference to Anderson, as we thought In a playful manner, has furnished tbe Anderson Mail with a pretext for throwing stones at Abbeville. If to we are sorry. We would neither knowlDgly nor Intentionally offend the Mall or give It pretext for speaking slightingly of tbla people. We know that the Dally Mall would not knowingly do our people an injustice, and we feel quite sure that .the Mall spoke, even as we subscribed to tbe sobool, under s misapprehension of tbe factp. We have always tbougbt tbat tbe Daily Mall was governed by a disposition to be Just and fair, and In tbis instance tbat papei mast have been disposed to settle some cherlsbei grievance at tbis office. At any rate, Abbeville is conscious of tbe rectitude of her cou-se. ? ? Where In tbe Benefit T Tbe House in Washington passed a bill giving tbe heirs of Sam Lee 810 000. Sam Lee was a nergo from Sumter who contested tbe eleotlon of Representative Richardson manj years ago. Sam Lee's belrs were of course not entitled In equity to tbe money, but wby should Mr. Latimer prevent tbe Republican' from sending money down this waj? If Sam Lee'8 belrs bad gotteu the money they would have In a little time turned it over to their white neighbors. And their neighbors could have used the money. "Prominent People.** In tho Qnrlntnpflu f.haf. *Lhp com in jd people heard Him gladly." But in tbls day and time that variety of people seems to be extinct. If orlme or death oocurs It la among "prominent people." If a man shoots a negro in the back it Is generally of that variety kuown as prominent people If a man robs a banks It Is a prominent man or a pious Sunday School teacher. If a man runs off with a neighbor's wife or duughter the families of both are prominent and the daughter Is always pretty. The "common people" seem to be extinct* or elee they are Denavmg memseives. "And News." ? Why does tbe Atlanta Georgian Btick "And News" after its name? Georgian is enough. Advance srilvalnof prints, percales, madrac, ginghnniR and other ?prlng fabrics oan cow be teen at tbe store of L. W. White. L * C - -N '-h rrT* ? . Acted Well, Rev. P. W. Gregg and Rev. Frasler. representing the Sonth Carolina Presbytery, met their associate trustee of the Presbyterlal High School, Mr. J. Allen Sml'h, one day last week. After conferring with subscribers to the High School fund, we learn that they resolved to abandon effort to build Ab fur an we are informed there was very little difference of opinion bb to the willingness or unwillingness of the subscribed to pay. We believe that they are almost unanimous in the desire to be relieved of tbe obligation. But there bas been no conference among them as to a plan of action. 8ome would pay grudgingly or unwillingly; others have openly expressed intention to resist payment. If anybody boasted of hl6 anxiety to pay b'lB m? ney to that school we are not lulormed ol tbe lact. Speaking our own opinion without authority fiodi anybody we do not now see how nay Huue body could truthfully claim anxiety to invest his money in tbat scheme. If we are correotly informed as to tbe action ol tbe trustees, we think they adopted the proper couise to pursue. It was blgb, honest and honorable in the trustees to refuse to collect money from throe who subscribed under a misapprehension of facts, and who are not now willing to pay. The uieu who subscribed for the sohool bave cause to respect tbe trustees for commendable action, and they have reason to be thankful to Presbytery lor relieving them from an em barreling situation. cnootrino tnr thic ftdltor. we think the board did exactly right In declining to collect money lroin dissatisfied subscribers. Tbelr action whs aloDg high lines, and tbls editor for one, holds Ibat body In blgh esteem, and be would on bis own beball express bis hearty thanfts. They acted not only kindly but tbelr course 1b wise. They relieved tome of their Jrlends, while others Intended to relieve lbtrBaselveB 8nd resist the payment. , But even li ?i0 COO bad been paid In hand the sum 1b totally lnadtquate to the tatao. llBbment ot a school of which the Presbytery ' aud the town would bave reason to be proud, i Again, we believe that similar schoulp, even when Inaugurated with sufficient capital, bave proved unsatisfactory. < It Is perfectly certain that a denominational school In Abbeville would not satisfy | the demand of this ptople lor larger and bet , ter fcbool facilities. Let our people unite In an effort to build ? V- ? A|A?. Af another bcuogi uuuoc. xud uoon iuuujo ?i our school are now too much crowded, and It will be only a Utile time until tome plaD or pretext must be adopted Tor keeping a Dumber of children out of the school. I A coudttlon like tbat ebould not exist. 1 Our school bouse fitteen years ago was larger than was necessary. In It there was space to apart. But In fifteen years our population has so Increased tbat we must have addition*1 bchool room. And wblle providing for tbe Immediate demands, let as look ahead | and build room enougb for a still greater aumber of children than we now bave. Two or three additional grades would be ol j .mmense benefit of tucb parents as ma; be , compelled to look to other Institutions for . the higher education o/tbelr children. A high school, supported by lb* people could te established In which tbe oblldren of every denomination could be accommo- 1 dated. ' OimtfDK Pavilion and Skating Rink We learn tbat tbe yonng people propose to < build a dancing pavilion and a skating rink In some suitable place in the olty. As we ' " * 1 41? ? ' ? Id I/" Innrh'o i uouerbiauu, iue pmuc luuab iatuivu ?? .. pirk? Abbeville needs a park, and there Is no place as suitable or as desirable as the park In front of Jndge Klugh's home. Mayor McMillan and bis associate councilmen have done more for the town than anybody else, and, on the principle that If a I man wanta to get work done he must go to a busy man to get It, we suggust that Mayor McMillan and his associates appropriate , eaougb money from tbe city treasury to buy a park. Thegroveln front of Judge K'ughV bouse seems to be an Ideal plaoe. If It can b< bought at any reasonable price, we suggest j that tbe town should buy It, and then appropriate SI,000 <?r SI,500 to Improving it and fix It up for young people, and old people, too. Benches and swings should be there. A great pavilion should be built, where old and youug may assemble for a pleasant hour It Is only a little while that tbey are young and ;i!ght of heart. Tbey soon assume tbe duties and responsibility of llle, and their days for social gatherings usually come to sn ead when tbey establish a new home of tbelr own, and they usually close tbe door of their tbougbtB to the great outside world. A little innocent amusement Is good for all, and we regard a reasonable partlolpattoD In tbe dance as innocent and as teaoblng grace or maDoer, dui, as bq oiu uauueiur, u we were on a Jury, we should not say as much for tbe skatiDg rink. White we would not presume to be the keeper of any manV o insolence, yet, speaklDg from an old bachelor's view point, be would Dot allow a girl who was in bis charge to ikate. Ibis editor loves to eee young people In Innocent amusement, but we have conviction* azalnst the skating rink. The young people In case the City Counol' does not provide a dancing pavilion, may call on you for help, but we would be more pleased If tbe young people danced Jn the hotel or In some of the balls In town. A pavilion In a park for dancing does not appeal to us. And a place anywhere for skating does not commend Itself. Of course what we say about skating U merely tbe expression or the prejudice and Ignoranceof'a bachelor. We are not trying to tblnk for you on a subject about whfoh you are possibly better Informed. Memible at Last. If our memory or understanding Is not at fault, one good prohibition preacher ha* quit tbe fight against the dispensary, but will aereaner exen qib euum iu pr?vem uib people from using Intoxicants si a beverage. That preacher's determination to pursue the right course Id the liquor business re mlndi us of the remark attributed to an Atlanta preacher who said that he did Dot preach against dancing. When members of his church danced he sought to Inspire them with more spirituality, or words to thai effect. RettHwiMkble Prospect for ? <?ood Court Housf. It Is a pleasure to note that the members of the Court House Commission who come from outside the olty limits are quoted as being a*, anxious for a good oourt house as the most enthusiastic townsman. At first we feared tbat th'-y might have such a spasm of economy as would scare Captain Nlckles and the town commissioners out of a laudable ambition but It seems tha>| tbe names of those outside the! city, like "Abou Ben Adbem'4, lead all tbe rest," In tbe desire for a bdtutl ful court house. The peop'e of Abbeville County itre not exceedingly rich la this world's goods, but they are proud, and their great numbers make them able to ou'ld as good a court bouse as an\body could wish to ? have. Let us build a court house so good, bo strong, and so beautiful that the next gene- . ration will not be put to the necessity of tearing it down two or three times as this generation has done. This editor has already seen three court nouspa ou th'< pul-lic equare, and if the proposed buiidiog that is to be built ot tbe old brick and the old timbers now In the barn, Is to De counted as a new one, mat win mane four court bouses tbat have been built In a life time. Let us build a bouae or wblcb tbe people living at a distance will be proad to see, and I J one wblcb the next generation will not fori * ehter abame, destroy. ' , . , j c ' % ... ?
