To the Democratic Voters of Abbeville County: In view of the several statements from the various candidates for County offices, and that the public may know ray position, I beg your consideration of the following: When the people of the County in, trusted into my keeping the important office of Superintendent of Education I found a debt of $14,000.00 hanging over the County School Fund and bearing interest at 7 per cent. Realizing that nothing can so cripple and disqualify States and Counties, as well as corporations and individuals, as burdensome debts with high interest, I began to give this my im? mediate and persistent attention. I * am glad to say I have had this debt reduced to $7,000.00 at 5 per cent interest instead of $14,000.00 at 7 per cent. During my stewardship the school laws have beon strictly enforced, and the schools have never been in a more prosperous condition. It is needless to say that the work has had my very best service. As to the future. I would like to; see our teachers better paid. No County in the State has a better equipped or more faithful corps of teachers than Abbeville. The question is bow are we to do this without burdeniDg our people with heavier taxes. Some districts in the County have voted a special school tax and yet the increased funds fail of the ideal. This is a question for all of us to think about. As to the length of school terms, ' Abbeville County is second only to Georgetown; Abbeville, Sumter and Charleston having an average of 8 months session and Georgetown 9 1-2 months. In the average session for white and colored schools, Abbeville stands third. I would like to see high schools established in each district, but in the sparsely populated districts it is next 1 to impossible, for the very good reason that there is insufficient funds to run me common gcnoo'B ? muuiuB. Many of our schools in the best populated districts are doing high school work, these schools are under the management of efficient teachers and are giving excellent service. There are one hundred and fifty schools in the County and granting that it were possible to visit two schools per day, and it is doubtful If this could be done, it would require four months to make the rounds of the schools. I have never failed to respond to a call to visit the schools when it has been necessary, and am glad to say that (he trustees generally, are men who have taken a lively interest in the schools and done all in their power to better the conditions of their reO/IVIAAIQ Tn FoartAAf. tn fhp CpUUbl VC DVUVV1U, J.U VB^vwv ?w ?W efficiency of trustees, Abbeville stands at the top of the list and always has stood there. In considering the candidacy of the several other estimable gentlemen ?vho are out for the office of Superintendent of Education, I would beg that you do not forget the present Incumbent. Yours very truly, F. C. DuPRE, ????? I 9fr. Henry Tajrgart. Mr. Henry Taggart has just returned from an extended visit to the north. He spent some time in New Jersey and from bis reports JNew jersey is noi a healthy place for the ordinary southerner. Things are turned upside-down. The erstwhile carriage drivers, plow-hands and colored jacks of all trades greet their acquaintances with a familiarity that grates hard on the sensitive southern ear. The "Yanks" can stand it, but the Southerner cannot. 1 Mr. Taggart represents New York as being a "warm'' city in the literal as well as figurative sense of the word. Great numbers died of prostration while he was in the city. On one 1 night while he was there Mr, Taggart found he would suffocate if he remained in the house and promptly 1 made for the park after he had retired. The park was the only place fresh air ( was available. He took a seat and a policeman promptly told him it was not permitted to linger there at night 1 and that he would have to keep walking. He replied to the policeman that ' he prefered walking to sizzling in an oven and continued to walk the rest of ] the night. 1 1 Greenwood Prices. ( Mr. J. W. Rykard, a close and intelligent buyer needed, some things last week and as Greenwood is so much < nearer his home than Abbeville he ? thought he would buy his "produce" < there, but when he began pricing thiDgs he found that Greenwood was ' 10 per cent higher than Abbeville. In view of Greenwood's boast of its < unequaled mart this is something of a stunner. I The joke is, Mr. Rykard actually seemed a little surprised. l Of course Abbeville is cheaper than ] [ Greenwood. Always has been and j always will be. In fact, Abbeville is the best mart in 1 upper South Carolina. ^ m l The Doctor's Association. The meeting of the Doctor's Association was well attended. A splendid 1 I dinner, a fine paper, and instructive ' - discussion helped to make the meeting 1 one of the most successful yet held. 1 * The Association, as it is being con- 1 i ducted, is of inestimable benefit to the members. The Doctors discuss all the 1 recent scientific progress of the profession, thereby enlightening those ; who have not the opportunity of getting in touch with the latest scientific investigations. 1 The next meeting will be held on 1 Friday, the seventh of September. Many of the readers of the Press and Banner will perhaps remember, as the fact was then stated in its oolumns, that about the first of Nov. last a man (colored) was killed at a frolic, on one of Hon.
