Bowling Green, Ky., June 18?At an early hour this morning Albeit Hamlin, Jr., said to be a member of the firm i.f Hamlin & Morton, horse buyers of Augusta, Ga., was found iu Reservoir park with a bullet hole in his skull, and apparently dead. He was removed to the city hospital, physicians succeeded in partially resuscitating him. All thai cau be gotten from bini watthat hie came was Hamlin, and tha' he was tired of life. The ball entered Hamlin's head over the right eye, and has not been extracted, the attending physicians holding it imprudent to make such an attempt. Among the entries today is J. Fraser Lyon, of Abbeviile, who is out for attorney general. Five minutes after his pledge came that of ex-Benator J. W. Ragsdale, of Florence, a dispensary candidate for the same place. The third candidate for the place is the incumbeut, LeRoy F. Youmans, of Columbia, appointed by Governor Heyward to succeed the lateTJ. X.Gunter. Mr. Youmaus was attorney general under Governor Hampton, aud is over seventy years old. The last pledge to come in, just five minutes before closing time, was that of A. Crane Jones, prohibition candidate for governor, from Newberry. The race for attorney general will be next in interest to that for governor. Mr. Lyon left yesterday afternoon. placing his check and pledge in the hauds of a friend, who filed it with Chairman Joues today less thanr half an hour before the list was closed. Five minutes later, a friend filed Mr. Ragsdale's pledge with his check. In a letter to his friend Mr. Ragsdale said that be would not oppose Mr. Youmans, but if any other man entered the race to file his pledge. He asked his friend to wait to the last and be particular not to enter him unless oiher opposition developed to Mr. Youmans. V. A. Hiuilh Won't Run. One of the pledges filed at the last minute was that of C. A. Smith, of Tim/nonsville, for Lieutenant governor. Mr. Smith's pledge was filed for him by a friend, who stated this afternoon that after reaching the city today at noon, Mr. Smith had decided that he could not enter the race. Our system of primary campaign and elec'ion is an invitation to any citizen to offer to lead the people to see the truth as be sees it, aud bo to contribute towards popular education in civic rights aud duties. Witn full rtogniMou of the merits of the men now announced for governor, J nevertheless feel that my own views as to the situation and the duties before us are sufficiently distinctive to make it of some public interest tbat I should attempt to present tbem to the people. This will require a number of separate speeches, and J will not now undertake to go into details. With a view to the practical result of actually accomplishing something for the State, 1 bope that some good men in every county will have views similar to mine and will undertake to advocate tbein as candidates for tbe legislature. In that event the people will have the opportunity to put into effect some of the measures so presented. I regret the necessity of referring here to any one issue; but tbe liquor question is now so prominently in the public mind tbat even temporary silence might be misconstrued. I regard the evils of drunkenness and tbe now overshadowing shame of dispensary corruption as alike symptoms of deeper disorder. The only possible remedy must come through attention to more fundamental princples. To these I shall give large consideration in the campaign. I believe that prohibiton is not yet practicable for the entire State, though it may be advisable in certain counties. I am unalterably opposed to the sale of liquor by any private citizen on aoy condition whatsoever. I am in favor of the conduct of the business by the state for the present, with the hope that it will be gradually curtailed by county experiments with prohibition. / cut i Biana ror me dispensary reformed. The punishment of a rogue as a rogue, whatever be his previous respectability or present wealth, would have a wholesome tendency to restore old fashioned honesty in positions of trust. No less is their needed an impartial meting out of justice to the murderers and bullies against whom the average citizen haB little protection but his own courage. The action of John Sharp Williams in defeating or delaying the appropriation of $25,000 to defray the expeuweH incurred by the prenident of the United Btates in traveling on official business is very small politics. Granting that the president in provided for in bis salary, if the same argument were applied to congressmen, Mr. Williams would, wnnoui a uuuui, ue aiuuug tuc most vociferous in opposing it. Members of Congress and ail other government functionaries are well enough provided for in their salaries ?this is Mr. Williams' argument? but they insist on the mileage allowed them as well, and this, too, while bein? provided with free passes. Mr. Williams should be consistent. The office of president of the United States cannot be too ylemnly regarded by the citizens of tnis country and the periodic efforts of congressmen to pursue a paring and shaving policy regarding the allowances of his household are nauseating. In all governments of the civilized world, except this, the chief is provided at state expense with facilities of travel. Here in this country congressmen have the privilege, but not the president. Congressmen make a pro fit of this privilege, lor tney are always given free, transportation and, in addition to this, they charge the people of the country a very high rate for travel. Mr. Williams should enlarge his conceptions of statesmanship. If he is sincere on the economy racket let him turn his energies towards the members of congress. Hughes and their little son, who have made this their home forthe past two years, will be very sorry to learn that they expect to leave the city about the 21st. of this month to remove to Mr. Hughes' old home near Abbeville where Mr. Hughes will resume bis old duties on the main line service of the Southern. Since living in Rock Hill, Mr. Hughes has been employed as engineer of the "shifter."
