I ' Lv ^ p,' THE COMMENCEMENT, Interesting: Exercises of Tbe Graduating CIh*h of The Abbeville Graded School. , ? The closing exercises of the Graded School ^ were held In tbe court house laBt Thursday Sp5 night. As Is usual on such occasions the v~. house was packed to Its utmost capacity. The exercises were opened with prayer by ' Rev. E. B. Kennedy, after which the Superintendent, Mr. L. W. Dick, introduced the graduates. The essays, speeches, and reel I tatlons of the graduates were delightfully ( t entertaining. 1 MIbs Jessie Speed, in the capacity of saiutitorlan weloomed the audience In her charming manner and paved the way for the speakers to follow. Mr. James Hemphill read an essay on Hypnotism and it was evident that thl* younglgeutleman had delved deep into this occult mysticism which will dobtless some i day develop into a science. The History of the Class, which just covers 1 a decaae, was read by Miss Eva Baker who ' proved herself a most charming historian. Mr. Hal Klnard was happy in the selection of hie subject for declamation, which was "South Carolina," and he delivered it well. ' The Old South" was set forth and mosl agreeably pictured by Miss Mary Roche in h well written essay. The comparison of the j old South with the new showed that Miss | Roche is well acquainted with ante-bellum < conditions. In a plain, simple and ifnaflected manner, which is yet so forceful and entertaiolng. Miss Benle Watson recited the "LegeDd of Bregenz." Her recitation received the best < attention. ' '? X urn?- ??1! riUlfiO iiUl? T* iiouu icnu u nga yt?|/?*vw eaBay on Compulsory Education, a subject j wblch la olalmlDK the attention of educators > all over the country. Mies Wilson held thai Compulsory Education would be a step for- | ward In our educational work. i The subject of Mr. Lalaud SteveDs' Declamation was one which has beeu the key Dote s t ' to all American institutions and policies I iri, sinpe^heold bell In the town hall at Phila delpbla rang out and re-echoed until lt? reverberations penetrated the utmost borders of our country?"Liberty." i " "Naughty Zell" was the subject of MistLouise Browus' recitation, and in her de- i livery and interpretation of the piece, Mis* i Brown shewed remarkable power of impersonation. The piece was very entertaining. i Mr. Bonar White read on "Some Americans who have Recently Passed Away." Id bis essay Mr. White sketched, lu a lew llnee, the lives of some of the more prominent 1 Americans who have passed away in the last ? ? tbiee yearB Irom the spheres of Literature t ' politics, and military affairs. Miss Julia Pennal read the Class Will wherein occurred sundry "Quips and cranky < V\ and wanton wiles" which were echoed from the audience by "Nods and becks and wreathed smiles." Mr. W. D. Wilkinson was ntxt Introduced _ by the Superintendent and spoke on "Tb< < News From Lexington" a thrilling piece and well declaimed. "The Greatness of Little Things" was Mist Mary. Carwlle's subject and while the 6Ut.Ject ' is an old one the esnay was entirely new and l (' * iresb, free from all threadbare platitudes and ; * sparkled with originality. The fact that "poeta nascltur noD fit" often causes some solicitation on the part of t> &Y. olass in tbe selection of a suitable class poet, bat in the esse ol thlB class tbere wts m solicitation, no hesitation whatever. The\ had the poet and each member of the clasK knew it. The honor tell to Mr. Uottlob ' ? Neotfer. I Miss Sara Norwood, when introduced, broke forth In the spirit of prophecy, Hud, In words ibat recked with occultism and my* tlcism, lifted the veil of tbe future of each ol her olass mates, and all ceemed pleased with V the fates foretold. Mr. W. B. Perrln exhibited splendid ora torlcal effort in .the delivery of his epeecbf "The Confederate Soldier." Mr. Perrln koav hjB audience aud selected a subject accordingly. No subject comes nearer the hearts of ail true southerners than does this one. II is a part of us. To the regret of all, Miss L'zzie C.lukFcale* ' was unable to attend the commencement on account of serlouR Illness. It Is said thai f r# Miss Clinkecaies Is one of the best impersonators in the class, and the audience doubtless missed a treat in her absence, aR bor name was on the program for a humorous reclta' Hon. At this Juncture the superintendent introduced Hon.,F. B. Gary, wbo has been serving as the faithful and eftlolent secretary of the Board since the beginning of the Graded School. Mr. Gary, after compllmentiDg the grade on Its thorough work and giving a few words of advice and encouragnment, banded each member a certificate ol bis work. No f one In the olty of Abbeville has been more closely identified with the educational advancement of its people tban has Mr. 'Gary, and the city and State has no truer Irieud. After the presentation of certificates, Mist Mary Perrln,ln a most happy mannersevered the tie that has bound the class for ten long years, recalling happy iemembrances of the past and bidding them God's speed for tbe future and an affectionate adieu. The muBlc for the occasion was furnished by Miss Helen Miller pianist, and Mr. Luther Ellis, cornet accompaniment. These young people are prominent factors of the A. R. P. choir. The music was splendid and enjoyed by ail. After the last piece bededlction was pronounced by Rev. P. B. Wells, and the commencement was over. The pople of the city may justly feel proud of their schools. The past year has been a most successful one in every respect and tbe work done reflects credit on the faculty and the large numoeroi pupne on me roue. m?'-. Letter to Oapt. Jno. E. Brownlee. Dear Sir: The usual way to buy paint is to take the lowest price by the gallon. Mistake; the buyer loses by it; how much? Depends on the paint; it is so much a gallon, or so much a year. How much a gallon, or year, do you think? As much perhaps, as the total price of the paint. It may take twice the number of gallons. N Avery, Delhi, N Y, owns two houses, both exactly alike. He paiuted one with Devoaand one with another paint. Devoe 6 gallons; the other 12. Go by the name; Devoe. There's nothing cheaper. Go by the price; there's nothing dearer, except not painting at all. Poor paint is better than none. What does it cost not to paint at all? Can't figure it out exactly: say a tenth of the building a year, besides looks What is poor paint worth, then? Don't know and don't care; you don't want it. Go by the name. Yours truly ' F W Dkvoe a.- Co Deadly Serpeut RiteN are as common in India as are stomach and liver disorders with us. Your tears on my cold face may fall, Wbich would pain me were I liviug, And in my ears you'll piteously call; Pleading?perhaps forgiving. Too late 'twill be, for I'll be still In death's cold, clammy bands; Too late to love, e'en if you will, When the grave then open stands. In life you cast the lpve aside, Wbich would have been my heaven, Scorning my love in all your prideToo late to be forgiven. Death draws the line 'twixt earth and J Heaven, And the sinner, perhaps, will be forgiven; Hut when the soul wings its flight above There is no more of earthly love. I The world is full of sorrow, at best, And death bring&only rest, sweet rest. LOWNDESVILLE. * Lowndesville, May 28, 1906. Miss Anuie Barber after spending jome weeks at Sampit, at the home of her brother-in-law, Mr. JD. M. Bourne :ame back last Monday. Miss Ethel Bennett of Cristal Springs Miss., spent a few days the first of last week with Miss Annie Liddell. A well attended and enjoyable gath ?riug of our young people was neiu at Mr E W Harper's Monday night. Hon. J. R. Blake of Abbeville, was in our town aud surrounding country several days last week. Mrs Ottie Hill of Anderson was the ?uest of relatives for some days last sveek. Mi?, Joe Sherard of Moffatsville, spent a day and night of last week at the home of her son-in-law, Dr. J. D. Wilson. The Lowndesville Base Ball Team had an ice-cream eating Friday night in the High School building for the benefit of the team. The weather was so cool as to cause the dainty to lose some of its usual attraction, in the summer time, and besides it threatened to rain which kept some from attending, yet the promoters of the enterprise succeeded beyond their expectations, in that the clear profits amouut-j ah n.hinh oriii h^ln much in eu IU TTUJVU ??!* ? proviaing a suitable outfit for the in-1 terested. I There has been here, to date, an un | usual demand for frying-sized chick-1 ens. Where they could be bought at all, more tfiat double as much has had to be paid as formerly but it is believed that the price will very soon take a tumble downwards, as a great many of them will soon be on the market. Friday Light Mr J T Latimer's store was forcibly entered, but bis entire loss has not yet been learned. A gun and some cartridges were taken but soon recovered, as the burglar weut next to the store of Mr. A. V. Barnes near by, and was making an effort to break into it. when some young meu who had been out calling, came aloog when the fellow, who ever he may have been, hurriedly left followed by some pistol balls fired at him. He did uot take time to pick up the gun and cartridges which he laid upon the ground to make the attempt to enter Mr Barnes' store, and these were returned to Mr Latimer. A gentle much ueeded rain which covered all of this section as yet heard from fell Saturday. It rained nearly all day, fell gently and will do much good. The order of exercises for the approaching commencement in the High School iu this place is as follows: Sunday, June 3rd, at 11 a. m., the Rev. Dr. F. S. Gardner of Greenwood, will preach the sermou in the Presbyterian church. Monday night Dr. A. B. Cooke, Professor in Woffoid College will deliver the address. Tuesday night the closing exercises of the school, by the school, will take place. Both of these last will take place in the school building. The pairons of the school particularly, and the public are cordially invited to attend. Troupe. The Very Bent Remedy For Bowel Trouble. Mr. M. F. Borroughs, an old and well known resident of Blutfton, Ind., says; "I regard Chamberlain's Colic, CLolera and Diarrhoea Remedy as the very best remedy for bowel trouble. 1 make this statement after having used the remedy in my family for several years. I am never without it." This rempdy is almost sure to be needed before the summer is over. Why not L * *" r\rnno roH fnr Qlinh An uuy it LIU? au? uo ^1v|/?4vv? 4v* wmv- ? ? emergency? For sale by C.
