--- -- ?: The Press and Banner Bv W. W. and W, E, Bradley. HUGH WILSON, Editor. ABBEVILLE, S. C. I f ?_ ?#-Publl8hed every WednesdP 82 b s year In advanoe. " fif 1 Wednesday, March 28, 1906. < The schedule recently agreed on by the Southern Railway authorities and the commission has made a bad matter worse. It ( Is proposed to take oft the midday tralri , with which the people have been served since the war, aQd run one train from Greenville to Columbia and return, dally, leaving Green- 1 vllleearly in the morning, and returning to ' Greenville about ten o'clock at night. This train would reach Greenville five . hours after the Northern mall train on the j Southern has passed. . It Is snggested that the bob tailed train be* tween Anderson and Greenville will famish all necessary mall and passenger facilities for Anderson, Bellon, etc., and that passengers from Charleston to the up country can reach Columbia by eleven o'clock, and go to GreeD. ' ^ ville via Spartanburg. This would be all r right if Greenville was "the only pebble." ] hn?, are not other ud country points such as Cbappells, Ninety Six. Greenwood, Hodge*, . Abbeville, Donalds, Wareb'Shoals, Due Wesi and Honea Path eutltWd to sorue consldera Hod ? Pa-sengers for tbese points would bave to lie over flye hours In Colombia. Tbe people of Abbeville can get tbelr North ern mall off on the late afternoon Seaboard train, bat Ninety 8Ix, Honeapatb aud Intervening towns not touched by tbe Seaboard are left high and dry both In the matter omall and passengar tervlce. A passenger from Abbeville, for Instance, overtb? Southern for Washington, will b? forced to wait In Greenvltte from live to ! seven hours for a train oo the main line. No [ kind of connection bas ever been attempted from Washington over tbe Colombia and ' - . Greenville to points below Belton. Willi tbe present schedule, It takes almost as long to travel from Waiblngton to Greenville at i from Greenville t? Abbeville, and especially If tbe arrival at Greenville Is on Sunday. Under tbe proposed new schedule tbls condition of affairs Is not Improved In tbeeligb'. eet. There Is no section of the State that contributes more freight and passenger revenue to 1 the Southern system than that porllon of tbe ! up country through which tbe Columbia and ' fc Greenville passes. If deference is to b* shown to any section surely It should not be to a section that contributes little or nothing. Tbe little low country connection that 1 If harped on so much, should be served by a throngb freight, with coach attached, which, j DnRwpr nil nnrnoReR. The Southern should ron Its regular midday ^ ; trains on schedule time. " Aside from the fafct that the good people of the Op country will be greatly luconveolenoed by the proposed new schedule. It ? shows the poorest business policy oo the part of the railroad authorities. Passengers lather than submit to loug delays at Greenville. will simply :take the Seaboard. This as a matter of faot Is becoming more and . Pv more common dally. t 1 i We really do not Iook for any substantial L help from the Railroad Commission, bnt I we think the road purely, as a good buslne* |' proposition, If not for the accommodation of | lts best customers, should maintain a reaI sociable schedule. Cards and Theaters. P Oar esteemed fellow-citizen, Dr. A. C. WUklns has a commnnlotalon In the Baptist t Courier wherein he Inveighs agalns cards and ' ^.. theaters. His remarks are on a much higher level than the average article od toe suojeci v and It la far above the average vulgar and 1 unjast pulpit arraignment of men ana women who are the keepers of their own consciences ana who refuse to be ruled by pulpit edlot. Bat for all that, we question the propriety or the expediency of the Doctor's remarks. The Doctor concludes his article with these I words. P'v - The tendency of such amusements, like oard-playlug, dancing and theatre going, is to render oae thoughtless and careless aboui 1 trne godliness, a star actress In Chicago bat- e recently proposed that people go to oburcb ? [ Sunday mornings and to the theatre 8unda> v [ nights, especially the poor who have no other 1 time, and they so much neen the refreshment [ that the theatre gives. Horrible! Ye.*, bui e i it shows how worldllness grows and wbat demands H comes" to make. See the danger*! 1 The card player, as a general rale, la not a < regular attendant at prayer meeting, seldom , If ever you see him there. The prayer meetlag Is to htm a bore. He Is not helpful In the Sunday school, with possibly an exception here and there. The enthusiastic worker, the devobt petitioner at God's throne, Is noi the devotee of the card part?. 8 The player Is notable to work for nor give c to the various enterprises that are bringing ? In the klngoom of Qod, and righteousness and troth. The noble, aelfdenytng worker 8 and the card player are nor the same p> rson * The two things are Incongruous. The one l? engaged In for exciting, worldly pleasure; the other is engaged In to honor Qod and to grow ' Chrlei-llke and 10 do good to men. Ever} f man, woman, pnd child should long for the \ spirit ane character of the great Son of Qod ; especially should every professor of rellg od 1 loog for ibis. He should eschew whatever id t terteres with Christian growth ana useiunL~ ness; be should enter Into everything that t will serve true godlineas. Adopt this, and where will the card party be? The charges above, while made with some i caotlon, are unjust to both the card-player and to the non-playing man or woman whom the Doctor would regard as most de- 1 Tout. He makes one too good and the other l. { be makes too bad. We assume that the Doc- < tor doe* not speak from experience la the 1 matter of card-playing. If not, then he is j an Incompetent witness, and the tendency ot i snob testimony from suoh a source is to lm- 1 pair the writer's Influence. The tendenoe ol J - such tlrada against the purity of womeu and tbe manliness of men Is to question the ' writer's.fcnowladge of either and more lm- ( portant matter. There can be no question i that those who play cards in Abbeville are < Juat as good as those who do not play, and It la uot susceptible of proof that any have been Injured. Tbe objection to cards Is i not greater tban tbe censure which should attend the playing of other games, If we are not In error, our good friend and esteemed brother raised no objection to tbe recent tent abow by tbe Itinerant temperanoe leoturer wherein moving pictures were tbe chief attraction. If we may have mov ng pictures, wltb tbe aocompapylng lectures, ' wby not (be theatre. There Is no more reo- , Sod, or Justification, In condemning all tbe- < atrea than there won Id be In condemning all j books. Wbetber condemned or endorsed, | tbe Justice of the criticism would depend entirely upon the purity of tbe book and tbe ] cleanness of tbe theatre. ( Tbere are three great powersjby which tbe I oeople are moved, namely: The theatre, tbe ' L press, and tbe pulpit* And uutil bumau nature 1b changed U ia Idle to preacb against ' either. Tbe thing for all good men to do is ( to deruaud a pure pulpit, a pure press, and a < pure theatre. All tbree of these forces should be utilized Id bringing glory to tbe Urert Head of tbe cburob. c If people play cards, or dance, or too often ( attend a theatre, tbe proper thing to do Is to appeal to the heart, and to inspire It with oblln'ess tbe heart will dictate to the lndlvldu al tbe proper course. j Some very good men do not attend prayej rv meetlDJfor superintend Sunday Schools. The j fact Is, we believe the Wednesday evening ( S prayer meetlDg Is Intended for the speolal 1 benefit of tbe women. They-need to get out of the bouse oftener than once a^week.
