Greenwood Journal. The miBtreatment of witnesses while on the stand by lawyers is something that should be stopped. We do not believe that the court should allow it. The witness is in charge ot the court and it should see that ne is protected onri troalwH pivlllv Wo haorrl a gentleman remark, tbe other day, that If he were ever insulted, while on the stand, by a lawyer he would stop 'immediately, and appeal, to the judge for protection, and he felt assured that he would get it, and the lawyer would receive the rebuke which he deserved. The facts are," said this gentleman, "I just simply do not propose to put up with it." And he is correct. We have heard of witnesses calling lawyers to account for mistreatment when they came out of the court room. A nd, in some instances lawyers have been warned by a witness before he went on the stand that he bad to be . treated like a gentlemau or the lawyer would have to pay for it. ' But it ought uot to be necessary to do tbis. It would 1 be a good thing lor a law to be passed , guaranteeing witnesses protection, i Another thing, no lawyer should be ? allowed in his t-peech before a jury to I traduce, and say all manner or mean j things about a witness. He has no right to such liceuse, especially where the witness is a woman. From all accounts, the treatment of the women who testified in the recent murder trial at Gaflhey by one of tbe attorneys was an outrage upon common decency. Every man wbo has a particle oi gallantry must resent such conduct. It inav lead to fcomethin? cood. however. id itie matter of protecting witness by tbe courts of our btate which are tup poued to stand for law, order and decency. ?
