A?*Published every Wednesdp at. 82 a year In advanoe. Wednesday, Dec. 20, 1905. The Proposed Railroad from Due Hem. A long lime ago, the people of Due West did not want a railroad, but now progressive oltizenB of the progresblvettown would like to have a railroad, and on one or more occasions effort was made to build a railroad to Donaide, four mlleB distant, on the Southern Hallway. We believe the people now want rail* road connections. Bellovlng that our friends at Due West are in earnest and believing that Abbeville wonld help build the desired road, we would suggest that represenlatlves.of the road come to Abbeville and confer not only with our people, bnt with tbe railroad folk. A road to Abbeville woo Id give tbe people of Due w en connection with both tbe Southern and the Seaboard. If tbe matter was properly pre sentea to the railroad folk It is possible that one or both roads would lend a helping hand. For the Seaboard railway, see L. W. Perrln, Esq., director; for ibeSouthern Railway, see Mr. C. D. Brown, the local agent. The Press and Banner b&8 very little doubt that the town of Abbeville would gladly vote a liberal .amount )n bonds. The proposed . road would run through one of the best and most thickly settled seotlons of Abbeville county, and to get a railroad, the people In the townships along the line would find It to their advantage to vote bonds. Tbe people ol Due West ought to vote bonds, too. The enhanced value of property would pay for the bonds four-fold over. If, therefore, the people so will It, the road oan be built. The line could be aided by one or both ol the existing railroads, and they would no doubt undertake to operate the rolling atook. The travel and tbe freight between Due West a hhariiift aririnrl to the large business of the people along the line would be a vain/ able acquisition to tbe railroad tbat would undertake to operate It. Railroad people are In tbe railroad basinets for tbe purpose of doing business. If tbe proper inducement in money was offered, tbe railroad folk would certainly do tbelr part. Tbe rlgbt way to do Is to oommenoe right. Let us vole bondB, and the Seaboard or tbe Southern will probably take tbe bondB, aDd build and operate tbe Due West road as a feeder to the main line. No ten-mile spur from any point ,would pay better than the line from Abbeville to Dae West. And railroad folk generally know a good tblng when they see It. cTbe people can grade the road. Tbe railroad ean do the rest. And splendid rallioad service can be had for tbe least possible cost. When money for bonds Is properly spent, tbe Issue of bondB 1b not burdensome, but la of advantage to tbe people. Come AK*!n. Ou last Sunday morning members of tbe - ' 4 mnaA -!.?/* Associate neiormeu cvii|ic(anuu noo to welcome tbelr sanctuary many visitors. The members enjoyed tbelr presence during the hour of prayer and praise. Putlog the prayers and the sermon without comment except to speak of the coneluding thought of the sermon. The preacher referred in appropriate terms to the approaching season which commemorates the nativity of oar Saviour and with which season Is aasoolated so many Joys and pleas-, ant memories. While we are glvln? gifts to friends aod relatives we should not neglect to give oar hearts to Him who first loved as. No more suitable time could be bad. l The preacher made no reference whatever to the practice wblcb prevails In some of the dark corners of Mexico, where even nominal Christians make the Christmas season noted for tbelr debauchery and cruelty to animals. Mexicans sometimes make It a earnlval oj vice, Instead of a season of praise and Innocent pleasure, as do the American Christians. Sunbeams, Clouds awl Chills. Mot so long ago a man sought to nay pleasant things to a pretty girl. She made no sign of protest for fiar of beailDg the sweetest story ever told, but when be said that be loved the light of her countenance by wblcb be oould see tbe sunbeams play about her face, a great cloud, without rainbow or ell ver lining accompaniment, took the place oi sunbeams. Served bim right. He took a chili. The little archer and such things aB overcome us like a summer cloud, bad done their work. Free Passes*. The newspapers speak of the announced Intention o( the railroads lo issue fewer free passes in iutura We think the move a good one. The Issuing of free pastes to one set/ of people, txcltts tbe tnvy or 111 will of another set vtbo aie less labored. Tbe ltsuing of free passes 10 one ?et ol men, and a lack of tact lo dealing wlib tbe great mass of people in business matters. Is mpontlble lor tbe outsagtously unjust \eidlcts against tbe rail* roads in the damage suits.
