The majority in attendance at the >Jsj present time being fctudents not from ihe immediate vicinity but from places hrou^hout the Slate and other States and five have entered this institution from ;-outb Africa. . ;'M Tue President of this institution is himself a native of West Africa. His father and mother h .ving been commissioned missionaries to the Dark Continent for several years, he was / if born there. In consideration of the present needs s and attainments of those who even -|a attend ite class, the course of study at n this college is at the present time elementary. Stress on reading, writing - and arithmetic' is the special'under- J taking of the" teachers, though higher studies are included in the Course; The industrial department trains the -$0 girls in sewing and domestic- science. The boys study agriculture and as soon as possible, a yoong man now in an agricultural college in Canada, is ex- Ja pected to take charge of a course In scientific agriculture With the view of training young men to be modern ag- Ms riculturists. A trades department is also in the plans of the institution but __ the money for these departments must first come into the treasury. The buildings now used for the work are substantial brick structures. The third building is the Harbison Hall erected by Mr. Samuel P. Harbi- , son, in whose honor the college is uamed. This building cost, including the heating apparatus, over ten thousand dollars. It is a handsome and useful structure containing eight olass rooms. A chapel that seats six bandred, a room for the meetings of the Is] a Young Men's Christian Association, . '&jfl or the college office, a reception room and sewing room. The solitary aim of Harbison College f|a is the moral improvement of its stu n- dents. This object has commended it : % ' not particularly to those who advocate >r, the industrial education of the negro nor has it commended it to those who have faith alone in the higher education of this people, Dot it has friends to among those who believe the present /'s n_ demand is a moral education of the negro that which will make him a ib Christian citizen. er This college is one of the enterprises ry near the town that few of its citizens v. take an interest in. Some may look m upon it with fear and some with hate yB but the past .years have not rendered or any cause for serious apprehensions concerning the usefulness pf the work. I Jewelry! Jewelry!
