also iliows the narrowness of the position
taken by the State. If the Slate can or will
Insure Its own property, namely: The State
and County public buildings, why should]
not the government Insure the life and the
property of Its citizens ?

The vast amount, which is paid out annually,
Is very nearly a total Iosp to tbe people.
It goes to enrich corporations in other States,
while it impoverishes our own citizens, and
prevents tbe normal material growth and
progress of the country. Is It any wonder
then that our people are poor and that those
who live on our substance should grow rlcb
while constituting hotblng toward tbe maintalnance
of tbe government whose people
they are systematically skinning?
OUR TAX.
Now, let us look at the expense which our
paying to the government which should proteot
the people from poverty.

When we remember that only a small per
cent of th^ vast sum which ^s paid for lusir
ance is ever returned to the polloy holder, it
is readily to be seen that tbe saving to the

by all the people. The amount returned to
the Insurers by the insurance companies U
scarcely appreciable. Nearly a'l the money
paid Into these Insurance associations is lost
forever to the people. It Is largely absorbed
by fees to the army of agents, aud the report*
of the abnormal growth of the capital slock
of these Institutions is proof of the enormojs
waste of money expended by the people in
premiums on policies. Liberal salaries or
commissions to the great armies ^of agents,
the Jarge amounts accumulated, and the
small or inappreciable amount wblcb is re*
.turned to the insured, sccount for the money
tbat goes out of the country every year, but
which might be kept at home and.uttllz d by
the Slate in paying current expenses of the
government and in relieving The people from
the payment of Slate taxes If a responsible
and practical cotton mill man were put in
possession of all the money which has been
paid in this State to life and fire. insurance
companies since the war, over and above the
money paid back to the Insured, be would
have enough ready money to inaugurate a
cotton mill at every railroad statiou in the
State, and thatj lm mense sum is forever
cash.

The celebration of the Societies at Linwood
College Monday night was a pronounced
success. The young ladies in dainty
spring frocks of snowy whltness were never
fairer or sweeter. Tbe balls and parlors
were beautiful with their wealth ol plants
and flowers?spring's flist offerings, while
the college aDd society colore were seen on
every side. Every number of the program
was excellent, and perfectly*rendered, but
the crowning feature around which so much
