f T . - The Press and Banner. Bv W, W. and W. R, Bradley. HUGH WILSON, Editor. ABBEVILLE, S. C. JEfPabllahed every Wedneedp at 12 a year in advance. Wednesday, April 5,1905. Lei Us Be Up and Doing. The Abbeville furniture factory will begin to turn lta wbeela In a little while from now. ?od Abbeville ought to atart a new eDterprlaa of aome kind. We oughtn't let the year pasa without doing aometblng or taking a step for word. Abbeville needa new! cotton mills. Wf cave capiu*!, muu aiiu wuier lur uon iuuubirlet. By mixing a little elbow grease wltb a quanlty of elay and water we can have bricks. By adding a little ready money with the brloka we oan go North and get all the help that we need for new cotton mills. The advantage of new Industries lies in the faot tbat , foreign capital will come to onr aid, and then when theootton mlllB are running they will pay ont every year to operatives as much as we put Into the enterprise. While some of tbe people In tbe ootton mills save nearly all tbelr wages, yet It Is true that a majority of mill people are liberal buyers. Aid tben If any body Is tired of his stock be may dispose of It at a slight dlsooant. By selling our took we are ready for tbe next enterprise. If men like Mr. J. L. McMillan, J. Allen Smith and Dr. F. E. Harrison would undertake to build a ootton mill, eaoh of >them would suoceed and there Is no reason why we should not have new ootton mill*. Thl? . editor adopts the rule of subscribing to all o( the enterprises, and then a little later on, be sells H at whatever It will bring. By doing this way we are always ready for tbe next enterprise. While we have no ready money yet If either of the gentlemen above would, or any body else, will start a cotton mill we will leod a helping hand, even If we sell tbe took next day at a big discount, rtlhar tnwni am maklnit nrncrAM nnrl Abbeville moat not stand still. If we oan'l * do anything else, we can start an Joe factory, yarn mill, a knitting mill, or a ware boase. Anything to give people honorable employment, and wblcb will pat more money on oar market. If either Messrs. Smith, Harrison or McMillan, or all of them, make a separate effort' they will sacoeed. And their success will be a benefactor to Abbeville. Distinguished Guests. Last week President James Boyce of the Dae West Female College and Cashier A. 8. Kennedy of the Dae West Bank, was In town oqe 0sj for a few boars, O ar people are bways glad to see good people from the good 014 town of Dae West, and to none are given a more oordlal greeting than to Messrs. Boyce *Bd Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy Is cashier of the beat back In Dae West, and Mr. Boyoe Is Pnaldabt of the best Female College in the Aihtni of Abbeville. ? i m From the Philippines. r. After an absence of three years In the Phillpine Islands, Messrs. Samuel T. Eakln, Arch M. MoCord, and Wade Wilson returned to their homes lastfweek, looking well and feeling glad to get backjbome. ThWr^ Journey was a dangerous one, bat their experience and their (observations were inch m to compensate them. Tbe Speaklnt. A number of fellow cltlsens assembled In tbe Court room yesterday to bear speeches from Hon. 1. H. McCalla, Hon. J. ?. Wataon and Mr. B. F. Earle, tbe latter from Texas. They spoke eloquently oc tbe subject of ? , reduction of cotton acreage. Mr. Lewis W. Haskell of Columbia, was In town a few days last week, spending a short time with bit brother, Mr. L. C. Haskell, and meeting old friends. Abbeville Is always glad to greet her sons on their retarn to tbe old home, and to none does tbe old town give a heartier greeting or a more cordial weloome than to Lewis W.Haskell. The Hone Doetor. Dry flannel applied as bot as can be endured alleviates agonies of neuralgia. An excellent remedy for hiccoughs in young or old is granulated sugar moistened with vinegar. If you use iodine, don't fail to have glycerine mixed with it: otherwise you will blister the skin. A solution of salt and water is common and efficacious remedy for sore throat: also for sore and cankered mouth. Should anythig get into the eye one drop of castor oil should be dropped in the corner of it, but if it be mortar or lime bathe with a weak solution of water and vinegar. A teaspoonful of granular phosShate of soda in a tumbler of hot water rank before breakfast for a few days is a olood purifier. This salt agrees with delicate nersonB and cools the blood,, besides promitag a flow of bile. Charleston and Western Carolina Ry. Bchedulo In effect January 23, 1905.
