Democratic Defeat.
Nearly all the newspapers that we hav
seen have assigned a oauree for the recec
overwhelming defeat of the Democracy
And Judge Parker and Billy Bryan see
wise enough to foresee the proper paths fo
us to pnreue In tbe future.
Judge Parker thinks tbe tariff Is one of tb
_ . reatest questions now before the Amerlcai
ople, when, as a matter of fact, we fenov
nobody about here who cares a cent abou
revising the tariff.
Tbe alleged fight on trusts Is a joke. Ther
are trusts and trnsts. Some are good ani
some are bad. As a whole, tbe trusts, Ilk
tbe great Industrial corporations, do much fo
the development of the coantry. To cry ou
against trusts without discrimination an<
without specification, .is foolish to a degre
bordering on insanity.
On tbe subject of high tariff: Men will
money and doing nothing to earu money, c
' course wan't to buy goods as cheaply a
possible. Tbe mecbanlo and the laborer wh<
bays bat few goods Is more Interested li
f receiving a fair wage for a day's work. Re'
dace tbe tariff and the wages of tbe greai
I mass of laboring people will be reduced
Without tariff every cotton mill In tb<
United States would be compelled to do on
of two things, namely : To Gbut down or U
reduce tbe wages of tbe operatives. Tb
same la true of many other manufacturini
enterprises. By the tarlfl money Is mon
easily raised with which to pay tbe expense
] of the government than it would be by direct
taxation.
We of tbe 8outb have blamed Presldeu
Roosevelt for exciting race animosity, but if
It not true that we, too, of tbe South hav<
t kicked up a big fusB on tbe race prdblem ?
It la true that the raee antagonism Is greater
today that It has been for thirty years. It
is also true that distrust and nnkindness of
feeling between tbe races Is to be greatly
regretted. Tbe evils resulting from such a
4 condition cannot be enumerated.
The election of Roosevelt proves as dearly
&B it is possible to prove anything, that the
people of the United States endorse him and
approve bis coarse toward tbe people of tbe
South. The smaliness of the vote for Parker
I proves that tbe Southern people have few
friends. Tbe united North stands as one
man against a solid South.
We believe it Is tbe Intention of tbe North
to rednoe tbe representation of the 8outb In
Congress, by basing tbe representation In tbe
House of Representatives on the voteB of tbe
8oath and not. as now, on tbe population.
Snob a coarse would reduoe South Carolina's
members In tbe House from seven to three or
four.
While we think tbe oollector of tbe port of
Charleston has little or nothing to do witb
nine-tenths of tbe people, U seems that both
tbe people and tbe President are In an ex
oeedlagly small business In fussing about the
appointment. A little discretion might have
kept down tbe friction. Tbe people ol
Augusta were more wise in tbelr protest
against |a negro postmaster. Tbe negro,
Lyons, wbowas objectionable to tbe people
of Augusta, was taken to Washington, and no
ruous was.kicked up. There Is little doubi
? tbat tbe President, by a little tact on tbe pari
of Charleston, could have been Induced not
j - to Insist upon tbe Crum appointment.
As It is, tbe President has official authority.
And he bas tbe.moral support of a United
North, and tbe negro bas tbe sympathy ol
3 tbe people living beyond tbe borders of Dixie.
With tbe sentiment of tbe country sgalnst
os, 1.8 it not Impolitic for the Southern people
to prod the Hon In his lair? We of the South
might Just aa well open oar eyes to the real
situation, possess onr souls In patience, and
wait for our opportunity.
| Not Rip Van Winkle,
The presence of Mr. W. W. Fraeler of Bakersfleld
California, gladened the editorial
sanctum of the Press and Banner one day
i last week. He said that he was like Rip Vai
Winkle, returning to the scenes of formei
1 years. Only a few of his old friends remain
And heconld recall the names of only a few
N men who lived on onr public square when
he was here. The public square now look*
much smaller than It did In the day of bifboyhood.
Except Mr. Parker, all the lawyers
are gone. Except Capt. L. W. White,
none of the merchants are heie. Col. J.
S Towns Robertson Is one of the names that be
9 remembered. And so it was with with Mr.
Tusten's name
M Mr. Frasler Is a native of this county, who
I went to California, many years aeo. WltA
the passing years bis love for bis old borne of
onlldhood bas Increased until now be can't
stay away from Abbeville longer than a few
years at a time.
Some twenty years ago tbat be mlgbt keep
In tonch wltb bis old borne, be subscribed
for the Press and Banner, and be says tbat
It oomes to blm regularly every Monday.
In tne twenty years only one oopy failed to
oome, and be wrote back to the office for tbf
missing coppy, wblcb was sent. Tbe regular
lty with wblcb tbe Press and Banner bat
gone to him for all these years Is tbe beai
evidence of tbe faltbfullness and tbe effl
clency wltb wblcb onr mailing clerk bas
discharged his doty.
When we see Mr. Frasler and hear hln
talk of bis old borne, we are reminded o
William Hill who came from Ireland to thli
country when he was a youth. In Mr. Hill's
old aee he often talked of Ireland and tb<
scenes of bis boyhood. In the latter years o
bis life bis heart lingered for a sight ol tb
friends and tbe home of his boyhood, am
more tban onoe be went back. His dlsapolnt
ment was painful. Tbe friends of bis child
hood were gone and the landscape where hi
rpentbls earliest year was familiar to bin
no more.
And so it Is with Mr. Frasler. Proiperoui
and happy In his California home, bis bear
IBtlll tarns to the home of bis younger days
and be has been back several times to see as
With tbe retara before tbe last visit, hi
brought bis wife with him, bat she did no
come this time. He speaks of her In such i
way 88 to leave tbe impression tbat be 1
till ber lover, and tbat sbe is still the idc
of his old heart, even as sbe was tbe ideal c
bis earliest years. Nothing on this earth 1
purer or sweeter than old lovers who bav
lived together in love; and unity for man
years. Going down tbe western slope togett
