Two white men, strangers, wbo seemed
to belong to that variety of travelers: commonly
known as tramps were arrested In
Abbeville last Filday, charged with passing
counterfeit money. We believe they had
passed three dollars of spurious coin, and '
t that six dollars of the same kind were found
In their pockets. They were lodged In jail
and brought before Commissioner H. T.
Wardlaw, wbo, after taking the testimony <
'bound them over to the United States Court
In the sum of 31,000. The evidence fully i
justified the Commissioner In so doing.
The prisoners excited sympathy rrom at
least one spectator. Their trial drew a
crowd of curious onlookers and the men, who |
had eotten the advantage of three men.
to the amount of three dollars were deemed |
very bad men.
But, as far as cheating anybody was con
cerned they were scarcely sinners at all, and
thelrsouls, in comparison with others who
wafrk uprightly and whosteal under the gulte /
of a contract, were whiter than snow.
Weconldnot but pity the ignorance of a
white man who would steal in violation of
the law. A white man. and even an intelligent
negro, should study the criminal law.
and not make hlmselt liable to the severesi {
penalties for the slighest theft. In order to .
succeed as an honorable thief the theft should '
always be under the form of a contract.

Stealing Is stealing, and yon can't make
anything else out of it. But the law provide
a way by wbichitcan be done by cunning
scoundrels without punishment, and it also
provides a plan by which the iuckness rascal
must sutler.
When a man starts out to be a scoundre'
and thief, if he would preserve his respects*
blllly and gain a churchly standing he mui-t
study the criminal law.
If, on tbe other hand, he is a natural born
fool, he can violate tbe statute, and gostralght
through to tbe penitentiary.
In one conrse the criminal can secure tbe
best offices in tbe church. In tbe other tbe
doors of the penitentiary stand open to

How and Where to Store Your ^
Cotton
Tbe long felt want for a place where cotton
could be stored from tbe weather, and held e
t during a depressed market, has been supplied n
by the Abbeville Ware bouse.
Farmers seldom realize what loss tbey sue- q
tain by keeping tbelr cotton exposed to tbe
weather, thereby loosing both in weight and
quality and sometimes consumed by fire. AH
such risk can be avoided by storing In tbe
ware bouse, which has a caplclty of holding
several thousand bales which are fully covered
by Insurance, where farmers desire to
draw upon their cotton, tbe Banks will cheerfully
advance a liberal amount upon tbe w
ware bouse reclepts.

hold their cotton for higher prices.

There is alwaj's something amusing, If not
Instructive, In walking through a city and e
reading the wording, the spelling, and the ^
punctuation of the different signs that are a
hung out over places of business. Abbeville p
has some such sign-painting that would a
defy the printer's art to reproduce. a
For instance: "Lunch-house by E. McKel- j
ler. No charge for politeness. Victuals is g
cash." No printer could ever reproduce the ,1
fantastic, delineations of this board. f
Again: On one of the brick walls ol the c

be found in chalk letters: "Hoetell." . v

alley and a bycicle shop, hangs out a sign ^

The next door exhibits a variety of signs

The law which authorizes the defendant lo
testify In a criminal case, Is we think, largelj
responsible for the miscarriage of justice
The dead man cannot testify, the living
should not be allowed to do so. When a man
Is on trial for bis life, the possibility is, iba'
his testimony may be a little biased.
Good Crop.
The cotton crop In Abbeville County will
average much better this year than last year.
While we think nobody's opinion is worth a
cent, yet we venture to suggest that Abbe
vllle County will make fifty per cent more
cotton than It did last year.
