Judge Ernest Gnry.
Although competent and active, Judge Ernest
Gary is to baveoDposltlon in the election
of hl8 successor at the approaching
session of the legislature.
It will be remembered that Judge Gary refused
to oppose his predece^FOr, Judge Joseph
B. Kershaw, In case he desired re-election 1
aud It was only after that Rble and foithfu. [
Judge had decided that he did not wish to
be re-elected that Judge Gary consented for ,
his name to be mentioned In connection with "1
the Judgeship. It would be a pleasure to J
know that Judge Gary would be treated
with the same distinguished consideration. 1

Fearless In the administration of justice, "

convenience and comfort of jurors and witnesses
it would be a matter of regret if the
State ihould be deprived of his services.
The promptness with which he dlspaches tin
business of tbe Court saves many dollars to 13

tbe numerous cases in which his decisions
have been affirmed by the Supreme Court. or
There are maDy qualifications necessarj
for an eminent and successful judge, and It p
is impossible to foretell with accuracy wheth .
er they will manifest themselves in a judge,

. Judge Gary possesses such qualifications.
He is in tbe prime or life, of robust const!- Z
tatlon, and many friends hope that he may
continue to adore the bench for a long time
yet to come.
Difference of Opinion.
Dr. J. L. Stokes, prohibitionist, trying to
obliterate tbe twelve hoars of prohibition
which we now have, charges up the lynching I
habit in this State to Senator B. R. Tllman. I
Mr. TUman Is no doubt partly to blame for
tbe lynching business, but be by no mean."
deserves all the credit. We would apportion
blame for this state of affairs in part to the
following causes
First?President Roosevelt's conduct in stirring
up and exciting race prejustlce and rac*
hatred. There is today more race feelint
tban there has been for twenty years.
Second?Righteous Indignation at assaults
upon women.
Third?The refusal of jurors to convict.
Fourth?The frequent escape of the few
who are convicted.
Fifth?The generous exercise of the pardoning
power by the Governor.
Except in cases of stealing, the convictions
are next to none.
Before the law it is more dangerous to bill
a pig tban toslay the owner.
, It Is almost Impossible to convict a man
with either money or Influential friends.
If a man ofthlSBort should happen to be
convicted a kind hearted Governor may set
aside tbe judgment of tbe Court, and pardon
the convict. Has any white convict failed to
to get a pardon long before the term of his
sentence had expired? If so. he must have
belonged to the crowd of poor white trash.

Cotton Mill* and Cotton Gins.
We see from the newspapers that the cottoD
mill people want to get nearer to the cotton AI
field by controlling tbe gins.
This newspaper does not pretend to know
how a change could be brought about, but Sp
we believe the Cotton Mills will or can make fn
great advances along that line. j ,
We believe that every cotton mill should tjt
have a ginnery and an oil mill connected at

Now the Mills pay about 82 for the bagging av
and ties on every bale. This Is almost a total
loss to tbe mill. A mill, then that uses ten t
thousand bales pays 820,000 for bagging and P'
ties, nearly all of which Is a total loss.
If a cotton mill bad a cotton gin and an oil b<
mill, tbe cotton mill could gin and pack the Jy
cotton free of all cost to such customers atsold
their cotton ;and seed to the mill. Tbe ju
mill could wrap In paper tbe bales that they #t
buy at almost no cost. {;
If the mill that gins It should buy it, wby |E
should cotton be expensively baled so as to
bear shipment across tbe ocean? "jj
This newspaper would not undertake to go at
