After expressing; profound respect for thos of our fellow-citizens who recently tools par In the Interminable and ever recurring dif cusslon of the time and place of meeting c the Abbeville District Society, we hope to b thanked for adding nothing to that tlresom discussion, and we trust to be pardoned fo whatever we may now say. If we are not in error, the attendance 01 these annual meetings has been very muc! reduced of late years, and especially so sine the organization of the local auxiliary socle ties, which send delegates to represent then: Pious and zealous delegates,* or memben while manifesting the greatest Interest in th welfare and prosperity of the society seem t be totally oblivious of the fact that they ar sapping the life of the institution by thel / never ending discussion ol the time and plac of meeting. Some of the propositions, if 1 were not a serious subject, are ludicrou enough to make a horse laugh. While some of the gentlemen are urgini the adoption of a regulation to have the At bevllle District Bible Society meet at Lowe desvllle, or Troy, or Due West, or Mount Cai mel, nobody has once suggested that tb Lowndesvllle, or the Troy, or the Due Wesl or the Mount Carmel societies meet at Abbe vllle. And nobody has suggested tbal the Abbe ville District Bible Society should ride th circuit and meet alternately at Anderson Greenville. Laurens, Newberry, and Greei wood. There Is Just as much sense and Jus as much reason in having the Abbeville Dif trlct Bible Society meet at the county cite named as there Is in the proposition to hav the society meet at Confederate Cross Road or at Jericho. Another thing. It the friends of the Abbe yille District Bible Society would perpetuat the society, they should put a good sized muz zle on those delegates who seem determine* to talk the society to death. It may be trne that the delegates should b allowed to talk, but the time has passed whei fnrthBf fait nf ohoncrlno' f.hn tlmp and nlan of meetii g should be allowed. Abbeville needs no lectures on the subjec of rtoing her duty In any commendable entei prise. Our people Kive of their money a cheerfully and as liberally as any people oi earth. The reoords prove this. But we are i people v?ho believe the days of martrydon are numbered. To expect people to go to a meeting and sufc mlt to an intolerable bore is .unreasonablt They are not going to do It. If, therefore, the well wishers of the soclet; would try to make the meetings interesting our people would be there In great numbers They love to be entertained, and can stand lot of It; but when It comes to booring then to death, they will not submit. Rather than be forced to leave before ad journment or to have the appearance of lnal lention or to show a lack of interest in a Ion religious service which is followed by an in terminable discussion of nothing better thai a repetition of time and place of meeting, ou people prefer to show their respect by stay in away. We believe it was Mr. Lincoln's Secretar; of War who said that an editor could com mand a fleet or perform the most difficul surgical operation. If an editor could do an; or all of these things he might very well ai tempt to regulate that old and honored instl tutlon, the Abbeville District Bible Society So here goes: 1. Omit tbe singing. 2. Reduce the reading of the Scriptures ti the text from which the sermon is to be de llvered. 8. Let the prayer be, so to speak, merely t telegraphic dl?patch, In behalf of the Bibi< Cause?in time, not exceeding one minute. 4. Limit the Bermon or address to six o eight minutes, which sermon or addres suuuiu ue peruneoi 10 me mailer Deiore tn society. Theological discourses should h barred. 5. Hire policemen whose duty shall be ti knock on the head any man wbo shall here after propose to interfere with the time an< place of meeting. 6. Give the citizens of Abbeville som chance to speak with the delegates who com from abroad, and not force us to foregi this pleasure or require ub to wait thre hoars for tbe privilege. 7. The matter of contributing Is a dut; which has almost become a principle wltl our people, but tbey are not idiotic martyrs They are not going to be bored to deatb Their liberal contributions and their nou attendance upon these meetings Is proof c the correctness of this assertion. If the meel lng8 are made interesting, they will not onl; give of their money, but they will be glad t< be there in person. 8. The meeting of the Bible Society is mon a social affair than a devotional aggregation There Is no use of putting on hypocritical air and pretending that our people are hungerlni and thirsting for devotional exercises. Ou people are not craving religious exercises This Is proven in the fact of their absenc from divine worship on Sunday morning Their fidelity to tbe Bible Cause is best attest ed by the amount of money which they glv to every church enterprise. 9. Because of the extreme length of the re cent meeting of the Bible Society, the greate portion of our people, as a rule, were deniei the privilege of meeting the delegates. Ou people love to meet the gentlemen who usual ly come, bat as great as that pleasure is, ou people are not ready for martyrdom. We are not wedded to any particular schem or program. We are only talking in the hop that something may be done to Interest ou people. Their gifts of money bhow that the; are Interested in the Bible Cause. If the; were better entertained our Deonle would b more Interested In the anniversary meetlni of the society. Oar people turn out in great numbers ever; year to Bee the circus street parade, and man; of them, after taking in the free exblbiilor pay to see the tent performance. The annus school exhibition Is well attended. Whei we have operas, or theatrical entertainment In the Court House our people are there. J our Bible Society meetings had some Interes Injected into them our people would he then too. Speaking for this editor personally, we wet sorry that we did not have the pleasure of ex ' changing a word with our friends who ha OOme lrom a distance. When a bodv waul to meet Ms friends, he is not In a very recef tive mood for religious services; and to liste: to talk of changing the time and place c meeting is out of the question. Such talk i tiresome enough to adjourn any meeting. J the gentlemen would make the meeting more Interesting the people would be there. President Lewitt W. Parker. ' Where tlie waters of Hroad River mingle, ; with those of tlie Savannah, at. the southern-1 most point of Elbert County, Is located the bome of Capt. Drew Cade. At this point, " since 1871, the good people of Georula and Carolina have come together annually to haveageneral good time. When a Georgian goes In for a frolic there is nothing that can stop him, he likes a - frolic ao well as anybody. Naturally, this a picnlcing rendevous can't bo turned down ill the two states. Savannah and Kroad ~ river bottoms grow big trees and shady trees, and Capt. Cades home between these two rivers is ideal, Broad river in the front and " Savannah in the rear, on the site of Old Petersburg and at the head of navigation are conditions that help to make It a very interesting place. e At one time this point was the business 1 ceuter for this entire country. There were three towns, all quite near each other; Vienna In South Carolina had nine stores, e and Petersburg In Elbert County had thirtye five or more stores and seven tobacco manur facturies. this being the distributing point for Georgia and Carolina. Thousands of 3 pounds of tobacco rolled into this town by b the old method of transporting the weed, e which was to till a hogshead with It and pass ! an axel through the center of each head, and > to the protruding ends of the axel fasten a pair of tbalts. The ' owner of the tobacco said, "I will kill you if '* you roll toy tobacco into that water, if you '* can't pass it, I'll tafce it home; but don't you e roll it into the water. Oh! I've heard that ? k nd of talk before," said the inspector. And !* prooeeded to roll the tobacco into the river. The farmer crazed at loosing all he had, shot * and killed the Inspector on the spot. e The old dueling place for Georgia is just ' this side the river, and the dueling ground ' for South Carolina, Just the other side the * Savannah. In Lincoln County. In these two '* spots many cases have been settled out of the 6 courts. e Here is found the original so-called Ferris p Wheel, built by Capt. Cade in 187G. Ferris patented his wheel several years later. The Ferryman at present is Abe Cade who e has managed the ferry lor forty-seven years '* without a contract of any kind. His fatherJ -'Ferryman Bob" held that responsible position sixty-nine years, so much for falthfule ness. The ferry was turned over to the pres 3 ent owner thirty-one years ago. e Just on the point between the two rivers is shown to the curious a mound where 1500 1 dollars was dug up, treasure that was buried long ago. s The historical Interest alone repays the a pleasure seeker on his flrst visit to the a "Point". Capt. Cade has added much to the 0 natural attractions of the place, in the way ol buildings, tables, benches, ect. J ' Quite a number of Abbeville people were " present at the picnic held here on the 3rd, inst. The Misses Malmie and Rebecca Tate, y two charming young ladles from Elberton " were present having a good time. Miss '* Norma Wright, daughter of assistant Coma mlssioner of Agriculture, was a visitor from Q Atlanta, Two games of ball Interested many of those on pleasure bound. Overton against Dalb! and Mt. I- The good Seceders in "De wits corner" like , pure enjoyment as well as any people In the world, and when they get their heads together to have a good time they spare no 0 pains in making it the very best. All the prerequisites for picnic grounds are found here?a quiet spot plenty 0 of shade, and a big bubbling spring, to which ! were added benches and a table. The music 1 added much to the enjoyment of the occn- j slon. Due West has always had good slne gers, and there seems to be no diminution of e this talent. o The brass band also had a hand in making ? the occasion so lively. The dancing was supurb. Oh no, not the i' Old "pardners?up-for?the?first?quadrille" 3 kind, but two little tota who had seen the i. "cake walk" somewhere and imitated it ' much to the amusement of the on-lookers | - All present gave themselves over to the '1 spirit of pleasure and abandon. We had a - pleasant day and appreciate very much our f invitation. ? | e Lebanon 1'lcnic. ' The people of the Lebanon section always b hospitable, excelled themselves on the ocg carton of their annual picnic last Friday. Lebanon is one of the land marks of our county, having been settled early in its ' history by Scotch Irish and Hugenots, whose e desendanta are today amongst the beBt of , our Citizens. The picnic passed off quietly and pleasant " > ly for the large crowd present, and especially e for the old soldiers and candidates who were given a place of honor at the dinner table. It is the universal verdict thatuhe dinner i- could not have been improved on. I r The hash was excellent. It was 1 purely a social gathering where friends and S " neighbors lorgot for a time the cares of bust- i ness and reoewd their pledges of good will i e in the friendly handshake.
