of the Amerioan newspaper manager I ask, Mr. ,
Editor baa the Winter of 1903?94 surrendered
to the softer allurements of gentle Spring ? j
Indications from all national conditions and ,
passing occnrrenoes point that way. Mother
Earth is everywhere mantling her heaving
bosom with her vestures of green, her woodland
and field blossoms and flowers, h> r fra
grant and balmy sweets of ea>ly Spring. The
animal creation are shedding their thick and
rough ooatings for softer and more glistening
oolorings, the Bnmmer birds of more Northern
climes are flocking thitherward taking their
flight, instinctively, dne north, while the
aquatic fowls seek 'similar latitudes, following
the oourses of the stream* where silver threads
trend their way through the beautiful valleys,
whioh they water, meandering now slightly and
anon with ripling? and boisterous cadences,
here leaping cascades and there loitering as
they fret their passage to their outlets into the
seas. All indications declare the surrender of
the most severe and oontinued Winter for 30
years to the alluring hopes and promises of the
opening Spring. "Opening the ball" with its
April?May 1903 sleet, hail and ice, its tornadoes
or wind and rain, its oloud-bursts and
following with its S killing frosts in Ootober,
its dread grip of oold, frosts and inclemencies,
the closing of the most severe Winter of 30
years is not regretted. Since November the

These temperatures were taken at sunrise.
Ihe average of the 69 days is 25 degrees X

That of the 41 days is 42 degrees X or 10
degrees 6nly above freezing. The general average
for tbe 110 days is 33 degrees X say a
continuous freezing zone. Gould the other 12
days have been taken and brought within the
"general" average we are sure it would have
not exceeded SO degrees thus furnishing in this
epitome a singular coincidence to tbe number
