And the flower-lover is full of delightful anticipations, also. He sees, in his mind's eye, the garden be is going to have next summer. He can smell the sweet peas in it, and gather, / in advance, the poppies and the pansies which will brighten it. So it bappens that the person xfrho really loves flowers enjoys them before they come almost as much as when they are here. And the memory of them lingers after they are gone, so we get pleasure out of them the whole year round. But we must not let a sentimental anticipation of the pleasure next summer's garden is to give us make us oblivious of the practial things which ought to betaken into consideration in connection with it. Before there can be a garden, there must be a good deal of planning done, and considerable work. The work will come later, but the planning should be done now, while there is leisure in which to plan well and wisely. The garden that is not " thought out" before garden-making time comes is quite likely to be disappointing in .many ways. There will be a jumble of things where there ought to be harmony, because we do things in a hurry, and "take our chances." And that "ao8Q'[ pay." What does pay, in garden-makiog , as well as in business, is knowing just where things belong, and taking pains to see that they get in the right place. The wise gardener who takes the time to think out her garden will not make the mistake of getting blue flowers alongside scarlet ones, or tall plauts in front of low-growing ones. Every kind of flower Bhe uses will be where it will show to the best advantage. The colors which harmonize will get into adjoining beds. White, or neutral colors, will act as peace-makers, and keep quarrelsome colors apart, The color which is pretty in itself will be heightened in its efl'ect by having with it, or near it, a complimentary color whose office is quite as mucb * that of emphasizing the beauty ol otners as 01 asserting us own unarms Of course, all this calls for careful thought and intelligent consideratior i of ways and means. If you do nol know the new plants, make yoursei: familiar with their colors and habit; by studying the catalogues. Nevei use a plant without learning all abou these things. Make that rule, and yot will avoid many mistakes. Don't be too ambitious. By that ] mean, don't let your enthusiasm leac you into attempting more than yoi can carry out well. This is trite advice I am well aware, but it needs repeat ing each season. "This mammoth clock will be installed on the side of the hill nsrth of the Agricultural Building. The dial will be a flower-bed of 120 feet in diameter. The minute-hand will be 60 feet long, and the ring at the end, which will be 8 feet in diameter, large enough to support twelve men easily. A hundred persons might promenade on this hand without interfering with the movements of the timepiece. The minute-hand will move 5 feet every , minute. The clock machinery will be in an adjacent building. The flowerbed will be a masterpiece of the florist's i art. The entire dial will be a flower-bed and the numerals marking the various i hours will be 15 feet in length, and made of bright-colored coleus, a foilage plant with brignt-colored leaves that , grow dense and may be pruued and kept symmetrical without danger of , impariug its growth. In a broad . circle, surrounding the dial, will be twelve flower-Deas, one opposite e?uu ' hour, each 2 feet wide and 15 feet long. I These collections will represent various flowers, but each will be sc - selected that the blossom is open at l the particular hour it represents and f at no other.
