TWO OLD MEN GONE.
ROBERT W. II ADDON AND JAMES
WAG ILL CROSS THE RIVER ASD
ARE WITH US NO MORE.
They were Lovely nud Pleasant in
Their Livcn, nod in Tlielr Detilli
They were not Divided.
Associate Reformed Presbyterian.
Oue mile from Due West and about
a quarter of a mile from each other
lived Mr. R. W. Haddon and Mr.
James Magill. They were brothers in
law, nearest neighbors and friends.
They were both nearly eighty-one
vears of aere, there beine less thau a
month between ' their" birth days.
Last Saturday Mr. Haddon was not at
himself in the morning but he wa9 up
and ate a hearty diuuer. Afterwards
he walked out and sat down under a
tree in front of his house and was soon
found unconsciouM. Mr. Magill often
stayed with Mr. Haddon when he was
sick, so he was sent for. Mr. Magill's
sons and daughter-in-law, who lived
with him, were away that day. The
boy who' went after him found the
house open, he called but no one
answered, he entered and saw Mr.
Magill lying upon the bed asleep, as
he supposed. He touched him to
awake him but found that he wan
dead, evidently having died between
eleven and twelve o'clock. He had
been in his accustomed health. He
aud Mr. Haddon were ?both in town
Friday afternoon. Mr. Haddon lingered
along until 8abbath afternoon
when he, too, passed away.
These two men were familiar figures
about Due West. They were among
our very oldest citizens and thpy were
known to hundredth of readers of the
Presbyterian. Mr. Magill was an
Irishman and was proud of it. He
loved this country, but he never forgot
the land of his birth. Everything
about the old country interested him.
He landed at Charlenton, afterwards
he moved to Abbeville county and
lived in the bounds of Long Cane,
where he followed his occupatipn
which was that of a shoemaker.
He first married Miss Means and
afterwards he married Miss Elvira
Haddon, daugbterof Mr. Abram Haddon
and sister of Mr. R. W. and Rev.
D. F. Haddon, and for a long time he
has lived near Due West.
One of the things about Mr. Magill
that always attracted us was his unfailing
good humor. He saw the good
side of men and the bright sid? of
everything. Mr. Magill was a consistent
member of the Due West A. R
P. church and on more than one occasion
in the last few years we have
heard him give expression to his faith
in Christ and speak of bis preparation

tution, Messrs. John and Ben Magill, Ak
of Due West, Mrs. Scuddy Burton,
Mrs. T. J. Ellis and Mrs. Annie Tucker,
all of whom were present at the
funeral, except the last mentioned. J
Mr. Haddon has been a man with
a very strong constitution,
but thoje who knew him have seen ^
for several years that he was gradually
breaking and lately they begun to
realize that the end was not very far
oil', notwithstanding he was upou the G(
streets ialmost every day. So far as wc
can now recall Mr. Haddon was the
oldest native-born person in or near <
Due West. His death is like breaking
a liuk wilb the past. He was married
to Miss Elvira Crawford and to them
a number of children were born five \
of whom survive their parents, name-,
ly, Me6srs L. T. and W. C- Haddon of "
Due West, Mr. J. W. Haddon of Ft. >
Sill, Okla. Mrs. R. M. Mayes, of Oakwood,
Texas, and Mrs. J. S. Sibley of
Winchester, Va. Mr. Haddon has ~
long been one of our leading citizens. d[
In many things he reminds us of Ian
McLaren's characters. He was a man
of sterling worth. His was a rugged character
but those who got down un- "f
der the exterior knew that he had a t
kind, warm heart. For a number of
years he was a deacon in the Due West
Church and afterwards he was made
ruling elder. He was greatly interest- I
ed in the Church and contributed
liberally of his means to its support. in
Mr. Magill was buried Sabbath after- 1
noon at four o'clock in the presence of
a large congregation. Mr. Haddon
was buried Monday afternoon at the I
same hour. Dr. W. L. Pressly con- I
ducted both of these service?. This is I
four sudden deaths we have bad near J
Due West in less than a week. Sure- I
)y there is need for us to bear the message
that God would Bpeak to us
through these providences.
