After the above address, tbe general
display of horses took place. It is
thought to have been equal to any collection
erer shown In tbis County.
Doable and singls barueus teams,
horse back riding by ladies and gentlemen
end racing were the special
attractions, and for tbe time this department
claimed the largest crowd.
At 3 o'clock P. M.. the business
men'a parade, beaded by a baud of
music, moved down Main Street.
Special mention should be made of
the handsome float of A. M. Hill *
Sons. It represented Columbus presenting
to ibe King and Queen of
ftpaln, a Columbus buggy. Mr. Lewis
Blount and Miss Mounle Sign were
the King and Queen of Spain. H. M.
Tata, tbe grocer, deserveii special mention
also. Tbe general exhibition of
harness and saddle homes was of a
high order and would have been a
creditable display at any State fair.
We were pleased to note the large
exhibit of County raised horses and
mules. Th l?depart men t was tbe center
of attraction each day, and promises
greater interest In the future.
The cattle, sheep, and swine department
was an improvement on last
year. We noticed one hog that wan
a counterpart of one we saw at Biltmore
?Vanderbllt's farm. Surely tbia fine
exhibit marks tbe passing of tbe " raont

Tbe display of field crope wm bettei
than heretofore ; all going to show
thai the formers ere wide awake in interact
of diversified crope.
Tbe poultry department was alive
with fine specimens, from snow wbiU
turkeys and large Plymouth Rocks,
down to tbe frisky bantams and fontail
pigeons. Everybody enjoyed tbii
department.
A special exhibition of dogs wnt
held; dog* of every size and sbap<
were there, from the frizzly face poo
die to tbe giant mastiff. ' We were e?
pedaliy Impressed with tbe larse Nee

HOUSEHOLD DEPARTMENT. '

This exhibit was also larger than us- \
ua\ Tbe profusion of canned fruits, ,
jellies, pickles,, cakes, etc., was a (
oeautiful demonstration of skill In
that department. Indeed, it would
be difficult to determine where the
premium belongs, so extensive and
Attractive was the display.
Fruits and vegetables were various,
and showed the wonderful possibilities
in this line throughout our section of
country. Our home raised butter, ,
lard, soap, flour, meal, etc., were evi- ,
deuces or our growing independence. ,

FLORAL DEPARTMENT. !
This exhibit baa assumed such pro- j
portions that it became tbe admi- i

palm leaf fern down to tbe delicate J
maiden hair; from the^large vase of <
elegant cryMmtbemuma to the mom i
delicate gerauium, all vied with each

of the cboioest specimens came
from the country. One gentleman i

From ? man's standpoint, thin department
presented a veritable " mystic

it was all understood. \
Tbe wonderful display of silk uuilts, (
knitting, netting, crochet, drawn |
jrork, batten burg, bom i ton Jftoe, em- i
broidery in ailk, linen and cotton was I
a revelation of sklil. We remember, \
especially. one baby's dress and two
lace handkerchiefs made by an old
lady 79 years old. It was perhaps the
moat delicate of all in that department. \
We noted a beautiful latting kerchief |
and knitted baby ahoes, both by old t
ladies whoee bands have retained their i
skill as the years go by. e

It is not too much to say that tbe 1

tbe Williamston Female College was a 1
perfect gem and would have done 1
credit to any college display in our f
country. 1
The llrowny and Tacky Parade on '

genuine merrimeut for tbe good natur- '

some in ox carts, some ou horses, some '

xize, from tbe little boy in his first

A geotlemao acquainted with Colo*
Del Realf, relate* a story told by him
when the two spent a night in conversation,
criticisms and recollections,
over a cosy fire and warm decoctions.
He spoke of the night be/ore the battle
of Cnickamauga, In 1863, at which
General William Haloes L.jUe rell.
The two, Realf and Lytle, lay together
in the General's tent. They were both
given to writing poetry, ana each bad
an unfinished poem on hand, and they
read and criticised each other's efforts
humorously for some time, when Lytle
said :
*' Realf, I shall never live to finish
that poem."
" Nonsense," said I, "you will live
to write Voiumee of such stuff."
"A feeling has suddenly come over
me," continued the General solemnlv,
"which Is more startling than a prophecy,
that I shall be killed In tomorrow's

tbem. They began to recede from me,
in a weird way, and aa they disappeared,
the conviction flatbed through
me, like tbe lightning's shook, that I
would never see tbem again."
" I rallied blm for his superstition,
but tbe belief bad become strangely
Impressed upon his mind, and be suooeeded
In sc far thrilling me with bis
own unnatural fear, that I begged him
to finish his poem before be slept
- " In tbe small hours tbe General
awakened me from a slumber, into
which I bad fallen, to read to me that
beautiful poem, which most live as
long as our literature survives.
"My eyee filled a 1th tears as be
read. He said not a word as be concluded,
placed tbe manuscript In his
pocket, and lay down to sleep. Before
dawn, came tbe call 'to arms.'
When I 'next saw poor Lytle be was
cold in death, among tbe heapa of
slain. I thought of tbe poem, and,
