Tbe writer ha* been kindly furnished with the following communication
relative to the Rev. Mr. (iibert:
"The Rev. Jean Lou!* Gibert wa? born near Alain in Languedoc
tbe 22nd July, 172*2. "-Vblle still youug he entered tbe ministry
and exercised the pastoral functions of his offire at Saintouge. His
zeal aud a distinguished reputation drew upon him tbe reeentment
of government. To avoid the severe laws in force againat Huguenots
he expatriated himself, and took refuge in America. He came
to South Carolina lu 1754, with a colony of 212 person*, who follow*
ed him to escape the tyranny of their own government. He died
in August, 1773, leaving a widow and three pmall children, one mo
and two daughter*. The son died uumarrled. Of the daughters
one married Mr. William Pettigrew. The children of this mar*
riage are the only descendants of the Rev. Mr. Oibert. The other
married Mr. Thomas Flnley and died, leaving an Infant son, John
Louis. He grew up a young man of great promise, but died early
while a student in the South Carolina College, Columbia. The Rev..
Mr. Olbert was Joined in this country by hi* nephew, Mr. Pierre
Olbert, who, after bis uncle's death, kept open the small church in
which he had officiated, reading the ttermons every Sunday. In
personal appearance, the Rev. Mr. Olbert was of middle stature?
black hair?aud gray eyes, with a strong cast of countenance. This
Is the description of one, who, in his youth remembered seeing
him.
"The Rev. Etienne Oibert, of England, whose sermons were published,
was brother to the Rev. Jean Louis Oibert."
